Cloutier McCann Principal T. Podobnik Vice-Principal D. Crook Head Secretary T. Lariviere Superintendent Of Schools In Flanders Fields ADMINISTRATORS MESSAGE In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie. In Flanders fields. The recurring theme throughout November is one of “remembrance”. All Hallowed Eve gives way to All Saints Day and All Souls Day. It is a month of endings and of new beginnings. We pause and reflect on those who we have known, loved and respected and who now are deceased. This month is also a good time to reflect on peace within ourselves and with others. At this time, it is good to remind ourselves to be role models in what we say and what we do. We pray for peace and an end to conflicts that exist in our world today. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow. In Flanders fields. John McRae. M. Pascucci Trustee Wards 1&3 We Must Remember R. Chambers / C. van Broekhoven School Council Chairs We wear a poppy On Remembrance Day, And at eleven We stand and pray. Wreaths are put Upon a grave. As we remember Our soldiers brave. Fr. P. Jones Pastor St. Dominic Church (905) 278-7762 Progress Reports will be sent home on Tuesday, November 17, 2015. There will be an opportunity for some parents, students and teachers to meet together at progress conferences on the evening of Thursday, November 19, 2015. At this time of the year we are also planning for the waiting season of Advent leading to Christmas and the beginning of a new liturgical year. Advent will begin on Sunday, November 29, 2015. “Many hands make for light work.” At this time we would like to thank our School Council who continues to work very hard to support our children and our community. We would like to thank the many parents who volunteered their time preparing and running the Halloween Dance-a-thon Fundraiser on Friday, October 30, 2015. The monies raised will be put right back into the school to support activities and additional school resources. The Council, with the help of the profits, will support many initiatives at a reduced or no cost to our students, and many other programs. We would like to thank our Queen of Heaven Community on behalf of our students and council for their organization and dedication in preparing for our fundraiser. M. Cloutier McCann T. Podobnik Principal Vice Principal SCHOOL HOURS Queen of Heaven School hours remain the same for the 2015-2016 school year. School Begins Recess (a.m.) Lunch Recess (p.m.) Dismissal 8:30 a.m. 10:35 - 10:50 a.m. 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. 1:55 - 2:10 p.m. 3:00 p.m. STUDENT ABSENCES As in the past, we ask that you call the school on the days that your child will be absent. This is a safety precaution that can save precious moments should there ever be an emergency situation. We thank you for your continued support in following this procedure. Upon reaching the school answering service please leave the following information: Date of absence Student's full name Grade level and teacher Reason for absence Date of return (905) 278-9771 Please continue to call each day that your child is absent. When your child returns to school, please provide the teacher with a note regarding the specific reason for the absence. ENTRY AND EXIT Teachers will be reviewing with their students which doors to enter and exit. Students are asked to use the assigned doors for their entry and exit and to proceed to the front of the school to meet their parents. We ask that parents who do not make use of the Kiss and Ride drop off, meet their children at the sidewalk areas located at the front of the school at the start and end of the day. Parents are not to be in the yard with the children. THE VIRTUE OF THE MONTH IS CONSCIENCE A person of conscience… • chooses to do the “right thing” and feels good about it • can see how his/her actions may help or hurt others • admits his/her wrong-doing and feels badly about poor choices • says “sorry” and tries to make up for mistakes • keeps promises even when tempted to give up • chooses to do what Jesus would do • knows that followers of Jesus will have to make difficult choices Let us pray this month, for the grace and strength to be people of conscience – people who know the good and decent way to act and then choose to act that way. THE ONTARIO CATHOLIC SCHOOL GRADUATE EXPECTATIONS Catholic education views human life as an integration of body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in this vision, Catholic education fosters the search for knowledge as a lifelong spiritual and academic quest. The expectations of Catholic graduates, therefore, are described not only in terms of knowledge and skills, but in terms of values, attitudes and actions. Vision of the Learner The Graduate is expected to be: 1. A discerning believer formed in the Catholic F aith community who celebrates the signs and sacred mystery of God’s presence through word, sacrament, prayer, forgiveness, reflection and moral living. 2. An effective communicator who speaks, writes and listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in light of gospel values 3. A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who solves problems and makes responsible decisions with an informed moral conscience for the common good. 4. A self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner who develops and demonstrates their God-given potential. 5. A collaborative contributor who finds meaning, dignity and vocation in work which respects the rights of all and contributes to the common good. 6. A caring family member who attends to family, school, parish, and the wider community 7. A responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the sacredness of human life. VISITORS IN THE SCHOOL In order to insure the safety of students and staff, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board requires ALL visitors (including parents, guardians, volunteers) to use the front doors located near the main office and report to the office upon entering the building. Anyone not wearing an identification sticker will be asked by staff to return to the office. This procedure helps students and staff in recognizing our many visitors at Queen of Heaven School. If you are picking up your child at school at a time other than regular dismissal, we ask that you report to the office to sign them out. Arrangements will be made for your child to be sent to the office. If you intend to send someone else to pick up your children, please write a note to the classroom teacher or inform the office. THE LUNCH TABLE Once again, a table has been placed in the foyer for lunches. Please ensure that your child’s name is on the lunch bag/ container. We are encouraging nutritious lunches. Classes are not to be interrupted for students to pick up lunches. Please let students know in the morning if they should expect to have a lunch dropped off. They should be responsible to come down and pick up their lunch. We cannot be responsible if a lunch goes missing. We stress that there are students with food allergies and therefore students are not to share food. Please check with your child’s teacher if you have any questions. MEDICAL ALERT – ANAPHYLACTIC REACTIONNUT ALLERGIES Please be aware that there are students in our school with a severe life-threatening food allergy (anaphylaxis) to NUTs and PEANUTs. This is a medical condition that causes a severe reaction to certain allergens and can result in death within minutes. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, please send lunches and snacks to school with your children that are free from peanuts or nut products. We ask that you do not send in food products for the whole class to celebrate birthdays or social occasions. A donation of a book or game to the classroom is a safe alternative to food products and will be enjoyed so much longer by the children. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any concerns or questions. We thank you for your co-operation and attention to this health watch. NO CHILD WITHOUT MEDIC ALERT PROGRAM The No Child Without program offers a free MedicAlert membership to students who attend our school and are between the ages of 4 to 14. If your child has a medical condition, allergy, or is required to take medication on a regular basis, then you should consider a MedicAlert membership through this program. For further information pick up a brochure at the school office, or visit www.nochildwithout.ca. If your child is already part of the program but his/her medical condition or contact information has changed, call 1-877-282-5378. STORAGE/ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION Parents are responsible for ensuring that all medication and forms are updated annually. If your child requires medication, please have all pertinent forms completed and returned with the medication to the office as soon as possible. Y.M.C.A. CHILD CARE SERVICES Y.M.C.A. To assist in this process, school agendas have been given to the children in Grades 1-8. Your child is responsible to record their homework, upcoming projects/assignments, important dates, and teacher notices in their agenda. We are asking that you, as a parent, check your child’s agenda on a daily basis and initial it. The teachers will be reviewing the importance of the agenda with their students and we ask that parents take the time to go over it with their child(ren). PEDICULOSIS FIRE DRILLS/LOCKDOWN Head Lice is a common problem which occurs at some time in most schools at least once every year. Head lice are parasites which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are not connected in any way with dirt or neglect. If a case is found in our schools, we shall inform parents of the students in that classroom in a letter. We have had a number of cases so we ask that you also check your own children regularly. If you find them to be infested, please notify the office. For more information check out We are required to conduct three fire drills in the fall and three in the spring. We are also required to practice two lock down drills during the year. Lock down drills involves students moving away from the classroom door to a location within the classroom away from windows. Lights are turned off and the doors are locked. These practices are to ensure that students and staff are prepared in case we should need to go into lock down. Lock down would be initiated by police and Board security personnel. http://www.peelregion.ca/health/topics/ headlice/. UNITED WAY and SHARELIFE Catholic School Council 2015 – 2016 On October 8, 2015 the first Catholic School Council meeting of the school year was held. At this meeting, the 2014 – 2015 Catholic School Council concluded its term and our new Catholic School Council was elected. We extend our appreciation and thanks to all members of last year’s School Council for their hard work and dedication to our school community. Members of this year’s School Council are: Co Chairs Co Secretaries Co Treasurers Parish Rep Community Rep Fundraising Co-Chairs All staff has contributed to the United Way and ShareLife. The funds will allow staff to dress down on Fridays. We are very pleased to be participating in such a worthy cause. COLD WEATHER DRESS In anticipation of the weather getting progressively colder, we ask that students begin preparing for outdoor play. This includes proper gloves, hats, scarves, jackets, coats and boots. Board Guidelines indicate that students will generally be outside for lunch and recess when temperatures do not fall below –20 degrees Celsius, with the wind chill. As such, appropriate clothing is essential. Please note that students should have indoor shoes during the winter months. Thank you in advance for your continued support and cooperation. R. Chambers & C. vanBroekhoven M. Maffei & J. Matchuk M. Mendonca & C. Gasper Marie Jansa C. Salo S. Seguro & M. Mendonca STUDENT VOTE 2015 Our school's junior and intermediate grades participated in Canada wide "Student Vote" on Wednesday October 14, 2015. Students participated in a mock federal election vote in the school's riding of Mississauga-Lakeshore. The student's ballots were similar to their parents’ ballots. The students experienced the voting process. The federal election results were similar to the student vote in our school. Everyone enjoyed themselves as they exercised their vote and participated in the election process. We would like to thank Mr. Arduini for leading this exercise in student voice. REPORTING HEAD INJURIES Even when it appears to be insignificant, we try to inform parents of all reported head injuries at school. We do this in recognition of the potential danger of any injury involving the head area. Our intent is not to alarm you, but to keep you informed. Please remind your child to let a staff member know if they bump their head or if they get hurt at school.
