Reminders…

 Remember, your goal is to use several sources of information about your topic so you can compare the information presented. This will help you figure out whether a source is reliable (has accurate information).

 Use the public library as well as your school library.

 Use a variety of sources.

 Evaluate each source carefully.

 Select the best sources you can find.

 Record EVERY source you use.

 Take good notes.

 Be careful to avoid plagiarism.

 Ask for help if you need it.

 Using images? Remember to respect copyright law. See the brochure Finding and Using

Images . Remember, you can also use images from EBSCO because we have a school subscription.

HINT: When searching print encyclopedias, develop a list of key words and use those words to search the index (in last volume – topics arranged alphabetically) instead of just pulling the volume you think you need off the shelf.

 Make sure to select results from The Canadian Encyclopedia.

NOTE: DO NOT use the online edition of The Catholic Encyclopedia

. It’s available online for free because it’s the original 1911 version. Yes, 100 years old!

 Browse the 270s (Christianity) and the 290s (World Religions)

 Search catalogue for other titles,

 Go to the Pocock School Library page, at http://www.dpcdsb.org/POCOK/Library/

The little stack of books in the upper left corner (just below the school banner) is the link to the new catalogue (home access now available).

 Results include items from both the Pocock collection and the Media and

Professional Library.

 Students can borrow items from the M&PL – just ask Miss Dillon or Mrs.

Databases are a good source of articles from newspapers, magazines, journals, and reference books, as well as other types of items such as images. Limit your search to

Full Text.

Select the Canadian Student Research Center .

 Limit your results to Full Text.

 Username available from School Library.

 Type the name of the denomination you are researching in the “Find” box.

 Click on Search

When you get your results list, select

“Limit to Full Text” and wait a few moments for the results list to be automatically updated.

 Start with the “Books” results.

Then try

“Magazines” and “Newspapers”.

 Scroll through the results list and select the results you want to read.
