22nd December 2013 A few thoughts from the Pastor: Emmanuel: God is with us! What a powerful promise and declaration from today’s gospel. It is the very heart of the gospel message called in Greek “kerygma”. This initial proclamation as repeated in the papal encyclical of Pope Francis states: “Jesus Christ loves you; He gave His life to save you; and now He is living at your side everyday to enlighten, strengthen and free you.” (164). The pope’s encyclical “the joy of the Gospel” shows us that living our faith is our joy. Joyful news is the Christmas spirit. Let us bring good news to evangelize a broken world by serving God in our neighbour. The idea of “procession” or “coming forth” in the inner divine life has its basis in a number of Scriptural texts. Jesus says of himself in John 8 (42), “For I proceeded and came forth from God”; and he says of the Spirit that he “proceeds from the Father” (Jn 15:26). In these texts Jesus is speaking not only of the external manifestations of the Spirit and his own Incarnation in time and space, but he is also referring to the internal, external origin of himself and the Holy Spirit. This idea referred to as the filioque controversy has been the cause of great division, particularly between the eastern orthodox and Catholic Church. Does the spirit proceed from the Father, the Son or both? The church has maintained since the council of Constantinople that it proceeds from both. By this formula the unity and divinity of the third person of the blessed trinity is maintained. As such all three persons belong to the same principle internally, but while the Son proceeded from the Father (Jn. 8.42) the Holy Spirit proceeds from both Father and Son, since the Father and the Son are one (Jn. 16.15). Thus the Holy Spirit proceeds from an act of willing in God — the mutual love between the Father and the Son, and so the Nicene Creed professes that He “proceeds from the Father and the Son”. GIVING TREE Thanks to your generosity, St. Anthony’s Parish was able to help 70 families enjoy a beautiful Christmas, Many, many thanks to all of you for your generous donations. For the second year, we invited parishioners to assist the caregivers with the sorting and packing of the gifts. The Parish Centre was “buzzing” with activity as gifts were sorted and placed in the “red Christmas bags.” How wonderful to see our St. Anthony Family coming together and giving so generously of their time and energy. Thank you again for making the time to help bring Hope and Joy to others. Mon. December 23 usual evening Mass 7:00pm Tues. December 24 Christmas Eve 6:00pm 8:00pm 10:00pm 12:00 midnight Wed.
