AROUND THE HALLS
SUNSHINE CORNER
St. Julia acknowledges random acts of
kindness and bringing “Rays of Sunshine”!
Students at St. Julia have been asked to share their
random acts of kindness by submitting “St. Julia
Rays of Sunshine” slips into our box which is located
beside the Extra Curricular board.
A Junior student wrote: “a Junior student helped me
with math and took the time as everyone else was
occupied.”
An Intermediate student wrote:“When I was walking
home, an Intermediate student stayed back to help
me look for my sister even though she had to go
home.”
In Primary, we read that “They both helped me to
clean out my desk without me even asking.”

BLACK HISTORY
The month of February was devoted to honoring
many famous Black scientists, inventors, musicians,
artists, politicians and those who have changed
history. Each morning began with a burst of energy
as students were greeted with a different genre of
music-from the 1920‟s Blues to present day R & B
and a famous Black personality was highlighted each
day on the announcements. During the virtue
assembly the choir sang the Black National Anthem
and an original DVD was shown depicting the
progression from slavery, the Underground Railroad,
the fight for equality to the triumph of Obama and our
own Governor General, Michaelle Jean! We were
able to deepen out understanding and appreciation of
Black History by participating in Black History
workshops for grade 1-8 students‟ brought to us by
Inspired Arts. Special thank you to Ms. Beaty for
coordinating the activities and all the teachers who
worked to make it a success including Ms. Kerrigan,
Ms. Laing, Ms. Milheiras, Ms. Archer and Ms.
Planche, the ERW team, and to all teachers for
meaningful inclusion in the classroom learning
experience!
CHOIR
The St. Julia choir has been busy this year preparing
and performing for our Black History Month

guidance and direction of Ms. Archer, Mr. Laing, Mr.
Pritchard, Ms. Pace and Ms. Planche. Special thank
you to Ms. Beaty, the ERW team and of course all
our outstanding choir members. Stay tuned for

Great
job
young
scientists!
He opened the school, each day
before the bell. If something was broken,
it’s him staff would tell. He changed
light bulbs, fixed coat hooks and was at
the class door. To clean up a student’s
breakfast thrown up on the floor.
He shovelled the snow, watched for
safety at school, Set up for Pancake
Tuesday, Always had the right tool.
When concerts or speakers took over the
gym, Then hundreds of chairs would be
set up by him. We hope his retirement
fulfills every wish. We’ll miss him and
won’t forget Mr. Frankish.

SWEET SUCCESS
Thank you to all the St. Julia families who
participated in the chocolate fundraiser. We
raised more than $10,400 to go towards enriching
our students' educational experience in literacy,
numeracy, science, the arts, physical education
and spirituality. Thank you to the parents who
donated prizes including Rani Nazren who
donated a Proctor-Silex Coffee Maker, a
Sunbeam Coffee Maker and a Nerf Dart Game,
Lisa Curic who donated Raptors tickets, and Amy
Melo who donated two pizza and crazy bread
coupons from Little Caesars. And thanks to SIR
Corp who donated a $50 gift card to Jack Astor's
Restaurant. World's Finest Chocolates donated a
stuffed bunny, three 5-pound chocolate bars,
Marlies tickets, a basket full of chocolates and a
chocolate bunny for each family who sold a full
box of chocolates. And School Council used
Council funds to purchase a $50 Best Buy Card, a
$50 Cineplex Card, a $50 Chapters Card, an iPod
and a digital camera to use for prizes.
The $9000 raised is a great achievement and a
huge undertaking for a small number of parent
volunteers. We'd like to thank Cathy Runstedler
who spearheads this fundraiser on behalf of our
community and the parents who helped her count
money, distribute chocolates and follow up with
families to return their chocolates in time to get
them back to the company without the school
being charged. These parents include Nina Lee,
Mary DiFiore, Annabella Flores, Jennifer Fabrizi,
Lucy Varas, Sandra Pinto-Trapani, Susan
Laughton, Stephanie Medina, Liz Moody and
Siobhan Kukolic.
A big thank you to the 13 moms, dads and grandmas who
practically got carpal tunnel syndrome flipping hundreds of
pancakes this morning (and this afternoon) for the St. Julia
students. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Thank you to those who dropped off your griddles for us
to use and to the to the St. Julia mom who donated all the
plates, napkins, cutlery and syrup (and who wishes to
remain anonymous).
I hope some of you were able to enjoy the fruit platter
donated from Michael-Angelo's for the parent
volunteers. Thank you also to Bobby's Hideaway who
gave us the batter at cost (and mixed it for us so our parents
would not have to), to parent Ed Henriques, whose
company, Improvement Renovations Inc, paid for the
batter, and to my husband, Tony Kukolic, who picked up
the four buckets of batter and delivered it to the school.
We thank our pancake makers, griddle donators, student
runners, parent helpers and all our generous community
sponsors:

PANCAKE?
Who wants a pancake,
Sweet and piping hot?
Good little Grace looks up and says,
“I’ll take the one on the top.”
Who else wants a pancake,
Fresh off the griddle?
Terrible Theresa smiles and says,
“I’ll take the one in the middle”

AROUND THE HALLS
ARTS IN SCHOOLS
Freeze kids Comic Book Art Tour visited St. Julia
School in January. Both Junior and Intermediate
students had the opportunity to develop their talents
in drawing. Specifically, the presenters were
teaching the fundamentals of drawing comic art.
Thank you to the School Council who funded part of
this workshop!
YOUTH AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST
The purpose of the Youth Faith Ambassador program
is to give some grade 7 students an opportunity to
build on our school's Catholic faith community with
student peers and to participate in experiences, which
nurture spiritual growth. Some examples of activities
they will become involved in are, prayers over the
announcements, food drives, decorating the school
with Catholic symbols and assisting in masses. Their
focus for the next few weeks is LENT and EASTER.
St. Julia Youth Faith Ambassadors will be
encouraging everyone to donate non-perishable food
items as well as a monetary donation to the Sisters of
Notre Dame who continue to pray for us all and are
asking for our support toward a water purification
program to help those who do not have clean
drinking water. You will see many symbols and
"posters" around the school to remind us of this
LENTEN season. Our hope is to extend our group to
include more students as they continue their personal
faith journeys.
ARE YOU MOVING?
If you are planning a move or have already moved,
please let us know. You are required to complete
new assessment forms even if you move within our
school boundaries. If you are moving to a new school
we will give you a Transfer Form to take with you to
the new school. If you are moving but would like
your child to remain at St. Julia, please submit your
request in writing. We will be preparing classes for
September 2012 and this information will be helpful
in determining class sizes. In the past, we have had to
reorganize classes in September due to unexpected
transfers.
ECO TEAM
The Eco-club kick off was very
successful. The kids had fun
learning about the role of Eco
schools and the proper way to
recycle. Many thanks go out to Ms. Laing‟s class
who did a wonderful job singing „Crest of the wave‟
by Jack Grunsky and to Ms. Bucszek‟s grade 8 class
for the power point presentation. The Eco club
would like to extend many thanks to everyone who
took the time to clean their styrofoam plates before
recycling. Recycling continues to improve school
wide. The Weather and Energy groups are now in
place and are monitoring water and energy
conservation on a daily basis. The Forestry
department at the city of Mississauga has donated 12
saplings to St. Julia. These saplings will be planted
along the fence line at the back of the school as part
of our ground growing project. Thank you to Mrs.
Kukolic for facilitating this for the school.
BUS LANES
Please be aware that the bus lane at the front of the
school is designated for Bus Drop Off & Pick-Up
Only. Sometimes the buses are late arriving or
departing from the school and this lane must be
vacant so that the buses can make their way to and
from the school. Parents are asked to use the Kiss n‟
Ride lane to drop of their children.
MATH MANIA
Congratulations to the following Intermediate
students who participated in the Math Mania
competition, held on March 6, 2012 at St. Jude
Elementary school. Alex D., Justin D., Raymond D.,
Joshua D., and Lauren V. all put their problem
solving skills to the test, as they cooperatively
completed a variety of challenging mathematical
problems and questions. Thank you to our coach Ms.
Laratta who is very proud of the team.
CRIMINAL REFERNCE CHECKS AND ANNUAL
DECLARATIONS
Volunteers are very much appreciated by staff and students at
St. Julia. Board policy states that volunteers that come into
regular contact with students must have a Criminal Reference
Check completed through Peel Police. If you plan to volunteer
for trips, driving students or helping students in the school,
please drop by the office to pick up a form. There is no charge
for a Criminal Reference Check when you are a volunteer. An
annual Criminal Declaration must be completed on a yearly
basis by all volunteers. Those volunteers who require the
annual declaration completed will be notified by the school.
