I was very fortunate to meet many parents that evening and look forward to meeting all of you during the course of the year. 2011-2012 School Council Congratulations to the following parents who have been acclaimed as parent members of our School Council for the 20112012 school year: Co-Chairs: Ms. Kukolic & Mr. Cinapri Treasurer: Mr. Viegas Secretary: Ms. Luis Parish Representative: Mr. Lawrence Teacher Reps: Ms. Burns & Ms. Beaty Principal: Ms. Nichols Vice Principal: Ms. De Vellis Carino We look forward to an exciting year as we work in partnership for the benefit of all the students. We would like to welcome Ms. Inglis as our SAT this year. We are excited to provide a collaborative teaching opportunity for our students. Our goal is rooted in the faithful practice that each individual is a child of God and belongs to our Catholic community of learners. ―Each one called by name.” Isaiah 43:1 School Council Corner If you would like to be added to the St. Julia Parent Volunteer email list to be kept in the loop about events, fundraisers and times when we need help, please email siobhan_kukolic@yahoo.com Jewelry Winners Thank you to everyone who took part in our St. Julia bean bag toss jewelry raffle on open house night. The winners were: Ms. Laughton, Ms. Cardoso, Ms. D’arisso, Ms. Peresicini, Ms. Cini and Ms. Schipani. 175th Anniversary of Old Meadowvale Village Thank you to everyone who came out to help celelbrate the 175 anniversary of Old Meadowvale Village. It was a wonderful day of fun, food, music, festivities and historic adventures. The weather we had made it an enjoyable and memorable experience. If yu didn’t get a chance to buy a 175 anniversary T-shirt and would like to do so, please contact Ms. Kukolic. T-shirts are $10. Classroom Interruptions We try our best to maintain our Literacy & Numeracy blocks free from interruptions. The office receives many phone calls throughout the day requesting messages are forwarded to teachers. Please note that messages will only be relayed before a natural break in the schedule to minimize any class time interruptions. Progress Report The progress report (grades 1-8) provides initial information, early in the school year, about a student’s progress. It is designed to show a student’s development of the learning skills and work habits, as well as a student’s general progress in working towards the achievement of curriculum expectations. For these reasons, the October Progress Report does not include marks or comments in all subject areas. While some parents may be invited to attend an interview on the evening of October 27 to discuss their child’s progress, there is not an expectation that all parents will attend an interview after receipt of the Progress report. If you would like to meet with your child’s teacher, you may, of course, request an interview. All parents will be invited to attend an interview with their child’s teacher after the issue of the first Provincial Report Card on either the evening of February 2 or during the PA Day on February 3, 2011. Information regarding interview times will be sent home to all parents. Missed Work due to Absences Terry Fox On October 3, 2011 the staff and students of St. Julia were out in full force. Students had the opportunity to walk the school grounds, and dress in red and white. The school raised $1106.25 in support of the Terry Fox Foundation for the Canadian Cancer Society. A special thanks to the parents who came out to support and cheer the students on and for their continued support. Congratulations to the Terry Fox Team for putting on a day for all staff and students to enjoy. A special thank you to a small group of students from St. Julia who contributed another donation after raising money for Terry Fox from their lemonade stand. Way to go! When children are absent from school they miss important lessons and work that extends from these teachings. If a child is absent due to illness we kindly request that children get the needed rest they require so they can come back to school healthy. The teachers will not be sending daily work home for your son/daughter to ―catch up‖. They will spend time assisting students on their return to school. If your son/daughter is absent due to extended illness, please contact Mrs. Nichols to discuss some available options. Illness Children who come to school are expected to participate fully in the class program. This includes taking recess breaks with the class. If your child needs to remain indoors for recesses a medical note should be provided. UNESCO World Teacher Day Criminal Reference Check – CRC required This is a reminder that everyone working with children must complete a criminal record check. For individuals who are volunteering in our School Board there is no charge for this service. Forms are available at the office. The form must be dropped off in person. The completed CRC will be mailed to you when completed. Please request a receipt when dropping off an application for a CRC and we will keep that on file until the CRC is completed. Thank you to the many volunteers who have already completed this procedure. We appreciate the time that you are able to spend helping in the school. Anyone else who is intending to help throughout the year with driving teams, supervising trips or helping in the classroom are requested to begin this process right away. On October 5, 2011 we celebrated World Teachers Day , a day specifically designated to recognize the contribution of teachers throughout our education system. At St. Julia School we are very fortunate to have so many dedicated individuals who work to provide for the education of your children. Thank you to our School Council for providing a delicious cake for the teachers to enjoy. Emergency Evacuation In the event that it is necessary to evacuate for emergency reasons we will evacuate to St. Marcellinus Secondary at the corner of Mavis and Courtney Park Drive. Your child will remain at St. Marcellinus until we make contact with you or an emergency contact. Please inform the office of any change to emergency contacts, phone numbers or address changes. Visitors to the School Rosary Apostolate We are very fortunate to have the Rosary Apostolates through St. Joseph’s Parish join us this year. These volunteers will be teaching the children the prayers of the Rosary and the hymns of Mary. Each student will receive a Rosary to bring home so they can recite the prayers with their family. The Rosary Apostolate volunteers will be at the school every second Friday beginning November 11. We will have a school wide celebration for the Crowing of Mary in the Spring. All visitors, including parents and former students must check in at the main office before proceeding to any other area of the school. If you are dropping off a lunch or book for your child, please leave it at the table by the entrance where there are pens and labels available for identification. If you are picking up your child early, the best practice is to send a note to the teacher with the time for your child to come to the office, this way we avoid interrupting the classes. You must report to the office and sign them out. Walking Wednesdays We would like to remind you that once again we are designating Wednesdays as a day for students and families to walk to school. This invitation is designed to encourage healthy living and also to reduce our dependency on vehicles. All those who can reasonably participate are encourage to do so. Bundle Sunday—St. Vincent de Paul Kiss and Ride Please bring your donations of gently used clothing and household linens to the church on October 29 & 30. A truck will be in the St. Joseph Church parking lot. Please take this opportunity to clean out your closets and share what you can with those less fortunate. Thank you for your support! We appreciate your cooperation when using the Kiss and Ride to drop off your children. We have a staff member usually on duty to assist with the flow of traffic and to make sure students are safely dropped off. We kindly request that you continue to drive up to the beginning of the Kiss and Ride to drop off your child rather than at the playground entrances. For safety reasons, please have your children exit on the side closest to the walkway as cars are passing on the left hand side. EQAO Results Last Spring, an assessment of reading, writing and mathematics was conducted in grade 3 & 6 classes across the province. This assessment is considered a ―snapshot‖ of the children’s performance based on their respective grade level expectations. St. Julia continues to implement a wide variety of strategies in Literacy and Numeracy for the benefit of all students. We are continuing with our Math and Literacy blocks and our Literacy Room has a wide variety of resources for our emergent, early and proficient readers reflecting the genres of text. Teachers work/plan with their grade level partners for consistency and use a variety of resources (manipulatives, anchor charts, math dictionaries, PRIME, PM, CASI) to meet the needs of the learner. Teachers continue to use data driven instruction and group students accordingly. MILK BAGS FOR HAITI Starting on October 17, 2011, as a Social Justice project, the students of St. Julia are asked to bring in the plastic outer bags from the 3 litre milk bags. These bags will be collected by Student Council members and Ms. Shea’s grade 5 class to be recycled into plastic floor mats for the earthquake survivors of Haiti. The colourful outer bags used to hold milk become quick-dry bed mats for medical patients in Haiti. By recycling a by-product of our milk purchases, instead of tossing the bags into the landfill we can give a small measure of comfort to hurting people who would otherwise sleep on the ground. Please encourage friends and neighbors to save and donate milk bags as well. Please remember teacher supervision, in both the main yard and kindergarten courtyard does not commence until 8:30 a.m. Afternoon Kindergarten students are not supervised until 12:30 p.m. in the kindergarten courtyard. Parents are asked not to drop off their children prior to these times as students will be unsupervised. Pediculosis Although it may seem early in the school year, we would like to bring to your attention a problem which occurs from time to time in each school. The problem is infestation by head lice, also know as pediculosis. Head lice have become common throughout North America in recent years. These parasites have been among humans for centuries. The are in no way connected with poor hygiene or dirt. Anyone can become infested. In order to control these pests we will follow the following procedure and request your full cooperation and understanding., If cases are found in the classroom, we shall inform the parents. We would ask that you check your children’s hair and if you find them to be infested please notify the school and we will advise as to treatment. If a child is infested he/she will be kept out of school until they have been treated with the correct shampoo and their hair is entirely clear of both lice and nits/eggs. Information on head lice may also be obtained from your family doctor, pharmacist or through Peel Health. A Year of Virtues At St, Julia, virtue formation contributes to a healthy positive learning environment by fostering a climate in which all members feel safe, confident and hope-filled about themselves, their relationships and their futures. Each of the Virtues is clearly outlined in the student agenda. A student centered assembly will introduce the Virtue of the Month. September October Faith Empathy November Conscience December January Hope Self-control February Respect March Kindness April Love May Acceptance June Fairness Candy As we did last year, we are asking students to contribute a handful of their Halloween candies for children less fortunate. Hard candy which is easily preserved can be brought in during the week following Halloween. It will be taken to Dr. Simone of ―Feed the Children‖. The effort of our children to share their good fortune in having so much is greatly appreciated. Halloween This is a very exciting time for children as they walk in their neighborhood trick-or-treating. We will remind students of the safety rules so they will have a fun yet safe evening. At school, students will participate in our annual Boogie-a-thon and are allowed to wear costumes on October 28, 2011, but masks, ―scary make-up‖ and any loose items such as toy swords are not permitted. On Monday, October 31 students can dress up in ―Orange & Black‖ to mark Halloween at the school. The most important aspect of this time of year centers on the two great Feast Days. November 1, is All Saints Day, where we honor the Saints of our Church and November 2, is All Souls Day, where we spend time reflecting and remembering those who have passed away.
