You have placed this creation, including all the people we meet, in our care. We come to you now asking for the grace and strength to love. We want to love like Jesus loved – without holding back; without wondering what’s in it For me; so that everyone around us will know what your love looks like. May we find the courage to forget ourselves on purpose for the good of your people. We ask this in name of Jesus, our brother, who lived to show us your way. Amen Pastor Fr. Marc-Andre Campbell Fr. CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK: MAY 5-10 During Catholic Education Week, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will celebrate the significant contribution that Catholic Education has made to the community, the province and to Canada. Our Catholic Graduate Expectations challenge students to articulate in society those fundamental values that underpin Catholic education. The theme for this year’s Catholic Education Week is: Catholic Education: Growing Together in Faith Our Catholic schools are places of growth. Small kindergarten students grow into being teenagers; grade nine students grow into young adults. We all grow both in age and, we hope, wisdom. Growth is natural and expected in the plant and animal world. As Catholics we are expected to grow in faith. What exactly that means will differ from person to person and ultimately, growth in faith is a personal matter between us and God. We can nurture our faith through prayer and knowledge and our living in a vibrant Catholic community. That is how we grow together. Community is part of who we are as Catholics. There are five sub-themes, one for each day of Catholic Education Week and they are aimed at helping staff and students to reflect more fully on what Growing Together in Faith asks of them. Day 1: Day 2: Day 3: Day 4: Day 5: Faith that is rooted Faith that is nurtured Faith that is discerned Faith that is witnessed Faith that is celebrated Catholic Education Week is marked by special activities, including prayer celebrations and service activities. More information will follow closer to the date. ST. JULIA RECYCLES! Thank you to all of our students who have been participating in the recycling program. The Recycling team has noticed a great improvement! Along with 100’s of 1000’s of other Canadians we will be singing this year’s song at 1:00 pm. The theme for this year is ―Filling Our Skies With Song.‖ Participants from coast to coast will also be singing along with us at the same time despite our different time zones. This year’s song was compiled by Ed Robertson of the band Barenaked Ladies (If I had a million dollars) and Commander Chris Hadfield a Canadian astronaut who is currently orbiting the earth 16 times a day in the International Space Station. During the March break Colonel Hadfield became commander of the I.S.S. The students have been learning interesting facts and learning the song about the I.S.S. and life in space. Families are very welcome to come out and listen to students on May 6, 2013 as St. Julia helps to ―Fill Our Skies With Song.‖ WALKING WEDNESDAYS Every Wednesday is Walking Wednesday at St. Julia School. Our school is an Eco School at the silver level and this year we are going for gold! The Walking Wednesday program is one of our student activities to promote taking care of the earth by cutting down on pollution. Every week student helpers welcome the walkers and give them a hand stamp. Teachers later report the percentage of walkers for their class. The class with the best participation will receive a certificate acknowledging their achievement and may be visited by the Walking Wednesday Wailers. The name of the class is also displayed on the Golden Shoe of Midas for the week. So have some fun, enjoy our Spring weather and make your plans to walk to school on Wednesday! Former NHL player Jamie Allison will be leading the presentation, which focuses on educating students on the 4 types of bullying (physical, verbal, relational, and cyber), and the role of the bystander. In a show of solidarity, BLAST is asking all students in the school to wear pink on the date of the presentation, which is Friday, April 19th, as it will tie-in with April's virtue of love. AROUND THE HALLS CLASS PLACEMENTS FOR 2013-2014 Planning for next September is well under way. Current grade level teachers, Resource staff and the administration will soon begin the process of developing tentative classroom placements. We spend much time taking into consideration not only the needs of the individual child but the needs of all children in the context of the larger classroom group. In each class we strive to balance learning styles, gender, learning needs and a cross section of abilities and behavioral needs. Please note that Ministry regulations of class size will impose little flexibility in class configurations. As you know your child best, we appreciate your input concerning the learning style and environment your child learns best in. If you feel that there are specific needs which should be addressed in determining the placement of your child, please send Mrs. Nichols a letter outlining the strengths and needs of your child along with a description of his/her learning style and the type of environment he/she excels in, no later than May 3. We remind you that it is not appropriate to request a specific teacher as staffing is tentative and things are continually changing or to make requests to avoid necessary combined grades. We will consider your input as well as input from the classroom and resource teachers and if we can accommodate your wishes, we will do so. However, this is not always possible. Rest assured, our decisions are made only after careful consideration of all the information and are based on the individual good of each child balanced with the common good of the entire school community. REPORTING HEAD INJURIES Even when it may appear to be insignificant, we inform parents of all reported head injuries at school. We do this in recognition of the potential danger of any injury involving the head. Our intent is not to alarm you, but to keep you informed. Please remind your child to let a staff member know if they bump their head or if they get hurt at school. ENTRY INTO SCHOOL PROCEDURES In the interest of all student safety at St. Julia Elementary, we ask that any person entering the building enter through the main front door and proceed directly to the Main office. We do not encourage anyone to go directly into classrooms or walk through halls without speaking to office staff first and obtaining a visitor badge. WARM WEATHER DRESS CODE As the warm weather approaches we would like to remind students that they are expected to dress in a manner and attire suitable for the occasion and appropriate to the school environment. Students must wear full length T-shirts with a sleeve (no muscle shirts or cut off T-shirts are allowed for regular classes or gym wear). Girls are not to wear anything strapless, spaghetti straps or have bare midriffs. Shorts are allowed provided they are modest. No short-shorts or cut off jeans will be allowed. E.Q.A.O. TESTING – GRADES 3&6 A reminder that this year the EQAO assessment for Grade 3 and Grade 6 students will run from May 23rd to June 6th. We ask that parents of students in these grades ensure that their children are in attendance during these weeks. Visit DPCDSB on the web for Board and School profiles. http://www.dpcdsb.org/EQAO SAFETY REMINDERS In the interest of student safety, pupils are asked not to bring the following items to school: skateboards, roller blades, scooters, baseball bats and hard utility balls. Also, we remind students about safe practices during recess times such as: no contact sports or play fighting, soccer playing on asphalt using soft utility balls only and reporting problems to teachers rather than taking matters into their own hands. WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN EVENING On Wednesday, May15, 2013, we are inviting all Junior Kindergarten parents to our Welcome To Kindergarten evening. EATING LUNCH AT SCHOOL Students in grades 1-5 eat lunch from 11:45-12:05 and grades 6-8 students eat lunch from 12:25-12:45. Since students have twenty minutes to eat their lunch and get ready for outdoor play or classroom work it is important that they either have their lunches in their knapsack or their lunches are delivered prior to the lunch bell. Please note that the office is extremely busy during the lunch hour and we will not have the opportunity to heat up any student lunches. When dropping off your child’s lunch please leave it on the lunch table at the front entrance and clearly label it with your child’s name. HEALTHY TIPS FOR PARENTS– HEAD LICE One of the main goals of any school is for students to learn and thrive. But how do we know if they are in fact learning? Students must demonstrate their learning in ways that show to what extent they have acquired the knowledge and skills that we want them to achieve. When students complete tasks, write tests or give presentations, their work must be examined by the teacher who then makes a determination of their success. The process of looking critically at student work falls into two broad categories: Assessment and Evaluation. These words are often used interchangeably, but there are significant differences. If we want to get the most out of Teacher feedback, it is important to understand the difference. Assessment is the process of gathering information that accurately reflects how well a student is achieving the curriculum expectations in a subject or a course. The primary purpose of assessment is to improve student learning. Evaluation refers to the process of judging the quality of student learning, and assigning a value to represent that quality. Evaluation is therefore a type of assessment. It is usually what we think of as final marking or grading. Assessment however can and should occur often through the period of instruction, not just at the end. Facts: Head lice are tiny insects. They live in hair, eyebrows and eyelashes of humans. Head lice cannot be spread between animals or pets and humans. Head lice are not a health hazard. Anyone can get head lice. It has nothing to do with being dirty or clean. Finds: You may notice your child itching or scratching their head and neck. Check for tiny white or grey coloured eggs called nits. Nits may look like dandruff stuck to the hair shaft however, they are difficult to remove. Notify close contacts and your child’s school if you find live lice. Treat: Information about chemical treatments are available from your pharmacist, doctor and the Region of Peel-Public Health. Only treat your child if you can see live head lice. You can choose to remove nits from the hair after treating, though it if not necessary. Do a second treatment 7 days after the first one to make sure any newly hatched lice are also killed. Tips: Be sensitive to your child’s feelings. Many parents and children may feel embarrassed. Avoid sharing combs, brushes etc. Tie back long hair.
