Lenten Prayer
Dear God,
During the season of Lent,
May you help us:
To thank you for the new life you gave to
Our world
And to our spirits
To find your presence around us in the
Sparkle of sunshine,
A word given in encouragement,
A smile shared in passing,
To open our hearts to your call,
To serve one another with your loving
Compassion
To have the courage to ask for help as we
Journey
And to know when we have gone off path
To remember what Lent is all about
And to turn our lives toward you.
Dates to Remember…

AROUND THE HALLS
SQUID PRECISION DRUMMING PRESENTATION
On Wednesday, February 6, 2013, St. Julia students were
entertained by precision drumming group, SQUID! The
Halifax-based group performed a variety of numbers using
different types of drums, bagpipes and stick tricks. The group
combines a wide range of genres to deliver a performance
that was truly original. Students were wowed by the energy of
the band and inspired by their presentation!
BUS LANES & PARKING
Please be aware that the bus lane at the front of the
school is designated for Bus Drop off & Pick-Up
only. Sometimes the buses are late arriving or
departing from the school and this lane must be
vacant so that the buses can make their way to and
from the school. Buses usually arrive before 9:00
am, during the lunch hour and after school. Parents
are asked to use the Kiss n’ Ride lane to drop off
their children. We also ask that parents do not idle in
the parking lot, so staff members may have spots
accessible to them when arriving to school. Thank
you for your co-operation.
DIVERSITY CONFERENCE
On Tuesday, March 5, 2013, 15 grade seven students,

ATLANTIC SALMON PRESENTATION

Hunters. Students were given information about the history

salmon as well as the current initiative to
re-stock
Atlantic Salmon in Lake Ontario. Twenty lucky
SQUID-NANCY
students won free bags donated by the OFAH by
answering skill testing questions about the presentation.
The grade two students look forward to releasing our own
stock of salmon into the Credit River this spring.
YOUTH FAITH AMBASSADORS
The purpose of the Youth Faith Ambassador program is to give
some grade 7 students an opportunity to build on our school's
Catholic faith community with student peers and to participate
in experiences, which nurture spiritual growth. Some examples
of activities they will become involved in are, prayers over the
announcements, food drives, and decorating the school with
Catholic symbols. Their focus for the next few weeks is LENT
and EASTER. St. Julia Youth Faith Ambassadors will be
encouraging everyone to donate non-perishable food items as
well as a pennies to the Sisters of Notre Dame who continue to
pray for us all and are asking for our support toward a water
purification program to help those who do not have clean
drinking water. You will see many symbols and "posters"
around the school to remind us of this LENTEN season. Our
hope is to extend our group to include more students as they
continue their personal faith journeys.
SCIENCE OLYMPICS
On Friday, February 22nd St Julia's Science Olympics team
competed at the Mississauga Central of School Science Olympics
Competition. The Science Olympics competition encourages
students to combine their knowledge of the science curriculum,
with problem solving skills, and quick on the fly hands on
teamwork to complete several hands on tasks. Past notable tasks
included creating a bridge out of newsprint, create a catapult out
of wooden dowels, and even create a load-bearing dome out of
straws! As usual the Suns were quite successful at the Science
Olympics. Team members included return veterans: Kevin I., and
Zac D., and "rookies" Luca M., Michael V., Jack K.. Great job
team! From Coach Morrice!

“Canadian Identities” speech.. Great job!

If you are planning a move or have already moved, please let
us know. You are required to complete new assessment
forms even if you move within our school boundaries. If you
are moving to a new school we will give you a Transfer Form
to take with you to the new school. If you are moving but
would like your child to remain at St. Julia, please submit
your request in writing. We will be preparing classes for
September 2013 and this information will be helpful in
determining class sizes. In the past, we have had to
reorganize classes in September due to unexpected transfers.
SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
Starbucks for Ruth
Thanks to everyone who made a donation for your
Starbucks coffee on Parent-Teacher Interview night. We
made $285 to go towards the Prayer Garden for Ruth.
Thanks to Starbucks on Financial Drive for donating the
coffee.
Brainchild Donation
We did a Stella & Dot jewellery Trunk Show for the
teachers and Siobhan Kukolic donated 12.5 per cent of
retail sales to Brainchild research at Sick Kids hospital in
Ruth's name. The amount donated was $137.38. Thanks to
the St. Julia staff whose purchases led to this donation.
When it comes to planning for success in student
achievement, there has been a great deal of conversation
around 21st century learning and the role of technology in the
classroom. The Dufferin-Peel board has developed a strategy
for moving towards an increasingly technology-friendly
environment within the next few years. At St. Julia we have
already begun to implement our technology strategy. Proxima
projectors, Elmo document cameras and in-class computers
are in widespread use in our classrooms. Staff members have
been in-serviced on how to use these tools most effectively
for student learning. In addition, twelve of our Teachers have
committed to a year-long inquiry designed to increase their
own technical skill and to more effectively use this skill in the
classroom for the benefit of students. When we consider the
pervasive reach of technology in the lives of our students and
the capacity of these tools to engage and educate young
people, our obligation to these changes becomes clear. At St.
Julia we are committed to increasing the diversity of
instructional techniques to provide further differentiated
instruction and means of assessment for the benefit of our
diverse learning community.
CRIMINAL REFERENCE CHECKS AND ANNUAL
DECLARATIONS
Volunteers are very much appreciated by staff and students at St.
Julia. Board policy states that volunteers that come into regular
contact with students must have a Criminal Reference Check
completed through Peel Police. If you plan to volunteer for trips,
driving students or helping students in the school, please drop by
the office to pick up a form. There is no charge for a Criminal
Reference Check when you are a volunteer. An annual Criminal
Declaration must be completed on a yearly basis by all
volunteers. Those volunteers who require the annual declaration
completed will be notified by the school.
