SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
Look out for our next movie night in February!
On November 29th, we had North America's leading
relationship expert, Dr. Karyn Gordon, in to St. Julia to
speak to our parents about raising Kids with Gratitude
and Empathy. She regularly appears on City Line and in
Chatelaine. She shared some amazing tips about how it's
our children's EQ (Empathy Quotient) rather than their IQ
(Intelligence Quotient) that will help them be successful
leaders in their future jobs. She explained that this topic
is not as popular in society as many people don't realize
how much our children's ability to empathize will help
them be healthy physically (because it leads to lower
rates of depression and higher rates of happiness) and
cultivate their ability to focus and learn. She also shared
statistics that show that 85% of our children will witness
bullying in their lifetime and the key is to raise young
people who will do something about it. Children who
will add action to their empathy and make a
difference. A skill that will serve them well in their
future careers. Incredible stuff. School Council applied
for the Parents Reaching Out Grant last year, and after
filling out the paperwork we received a $1000 grant. Dr.
Karyn Gordon's speaking fee is $2500 but she does the
event for $1000 for the first ten schools to sign up. So we
made sure that St. Julia got her for $1000 so that it
was covered by our grant. Once she was booked, we
started advertising. We emailed all the principals and
vice principals in Dufferin-Peel along with other Boardaffiliated organizations. We emailed St. Joseph's Church
and Loyola Church. We had Councillor Carlson at the
City of Mississauga pay to have a sign put out on
Creditview Road to advertise the event. We also did
emails to our St. Julia parent list, included the invite in
our own school newsletter and hung signs on the front
doors of our school. Last night we had 30 parents
Mumbwell
attend the event, and only 10 were from St. Julia. This
was a surprise as we had attendance rates of 80 parents
and 90 parents for the two parenting experts we invited to
the school last year. If you are interested in providing
input on who next year's School Council invites to St.
Julia with our PRO Grant money, please give your
feedback to the office. This input will help the School
Council decide whether to apply for the PRO Grant for
our fifth year running.
Calling All Parents!
St. Julia is looking for talent! Calling all parents! St.
Julia is looking for anyone who has a special talent,
ability, or hobby that they may be willing to share
with students of St. Julia. If you have what we’re
looking for, please send a note to Mrs. Lawrence or
Mrs. Bitti outlining your name, phone number, child’s
class as well as a brief description of your special
ability. Thank you!

OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL HERITAGE
Exactly what separate school rights does section 93 (1)
guarantee?
Section 93 (1) protects all the provisions of the last
separate school legislation passed before Confederation,
the Separate School (Scott) act of 1863. Among others,
the Act provided the following rights:
(a) To form a separate school board with five or
more Catholic heads of family resident in a
public school jurisdiction;
(b) To receive government grants equitable with
those of the public school system;
(c) To receive equitable funding;
(d) To have separate school boundaries enlarged;
(e) To elect separate school trustees with all the
powers of public school trustees.
Once section 93(1) was enacted, why did Ontario’s
separate school supporters continue to suffer financial
hardship?
The Separate school (Scott) Act of 1863 did not anticipate
the creation and/or growth of corporations and public
utilities in Ontario, or the creation of public high schools.
These two omissions caused over 100 years of financial
hardships and inequality for separate school supporters.
Why did Catholic parents and students have to pay
tuition to attend a Catholic high school after grade
ten?
In 1871 the Ontario government passed an Act to improve
the Common Schools and Grammar Schools of Ontario.
This Act abolished common and grammar schools and
created public schools for grades one to ten and high
schools for grades nine to thirteen. The highest official
with the Department of Education, Egerton Ryerson,
commented that the 1871 Act did not affect separate
schools. The separate school boards operating secondary
school carried on, receiving funding from grants and
taxes. However, early in the twentieth century the
government passed legislation and forbade a separate
school board from offering education beyond grade ten if
its boundaries fell partially or fully within the boundaries
of a high school district. Thus, all but one separate school
board (in Dublin) lost their ability to receive tax or
government grant financing beyond grade ten.
Furthermore, if a separate school board chose to continue
operating grades nine and ten, it received only elementary
school grants for them.

CURRICULUM CORNER
What is a Three-Part Lesson anyway?
You have probably heard a lot lately about the three-part lesson. Here is a short introduction to the
three-part lesson so that you may be better informed about a learning strategy that is becoming
more and more prevalent in our school and in our board.
The three-part lesson is (not surprisingly) divided into three parts. The first part is known simply
as “Before” (sometimes called ‘Getting Started’ or ‘Minds-on’). This part of the lesson should be 10–
15 minutes in length. The purpose of this part of the lesson is to get the students prepared for the
day’s lesson by having them think about ideas and concepts they have learned and used before. The
teacher organizes a ‘revisit’ to a concept, procedure or strategy related to the lesson’s learning goal.
The ‘revisit’ might be a class discussion of the previous problem, a connection to a real-world
situation, a video clip or a demonstration.
The second part of the three-part lesson is called the “During” (also known as ‘Working on It’) and it
should be 30–40 minutes in length. In this key part of the lesson, students are actively working to
solve the problem. They work in small groups, in pairs, or individually to solve a problem and
record the thinking they used to develop solutions. While the students are working, the teacher
circulates, making observations about the ways students are interacting and taking notes about the
methods, strategies and language the students use to solve problems.
The third part of the three-part lesson is the ‘After’ (also known as ‘Consolidation and Practice’). It
should be about 10–15 minutes in length. In this phase, the teacher co-ordinates student sharing of
solutions. Through sharing and discussion, students can hear and analyze their classmates’ thinking
as well as their own. In doing so, students develop their understanding of the learning goal of the
lesson in terms of making connections to prior knowledge and making generalizations.
Although the three-part lesson can be used in any subject area, it is most commonly associated with
math. So don’t be surprised if you start to see a change in the way your child is being taught in the
math classroom. As always, St Julia Teachers are striving to use the most up-to-date and innovative
instructional practices for the betterment and success of each of your children.

A Message from your Trustee Peter Ferreira
As Christmas quickly approaches we find ourselves preparing during this Advent season. As
Catholics we commemorate it in many ways. We anticipate the celebration of Jesus’ birth, prepare to
close out another liturgical year and make plans to spend time with family and friends. As stewards of
Catholic education, we embrace the opportunity Advent offers us to make the coming of Christ more
meaningful in the lives of our students. Pope Benedict XVI explains: "Advent is the spiritual season of
hope par excellence, and in this season the whole Church is called to be hope, for itself and for the
world.” The promise of the Lord's goodness is all around us—we have only to be attentive and prepare
the Lord’s way as we hear John the Baptist proclaim in the gospel. During this season of hope, may we
open our hearts to God's love as we prepare to welcome Christ into our lives and homes.
As we come to the end of the calendar year, 2012, it is also important for us to reflect upon and celebrate
our successes over the past school year. As in previous years, there is much to be proud of. DufferinPeel continues to be leaders in Catholic education in the 21st century. With the collaborative efforts of
home, school, and parish working together, our board continues to exceed provincial standards in student
achievement, and remain a hallmark for Catholic education. As we embark on a new year, we continue
to strive to improve the learning experience and environment for all our 21st century learners. Recently
our board held a congress for all principals and senior administrators in order to reflect on our 21 st century
schools and what it involves. With new and improved technological advancements in the classrooms
such as smart boards, advanced computers and programs, more hands on learning experiences, and by
empowering our students to be innovative and creative thinkers and problem solvers, we are preparing our
students for successful careers and new jobs of the 21st century. Most importantly our students are
receiving a Catholic education. One that will be illuminated in spirit of Christ and will reflect our gospel
values through all aspects of the school environment. Our students will leave our schools not only
modeling the gospel values, but embrace stewardship along with our Ontario Catholic School Graduate
Expectations.
I wish to thank all our parents, volunteers, who have given the St. Julia school community so much help
and have willingly assisted both students and staff throughout the first term. My family and I wish to
extend to all members of the St. Julia school community a hope that the Christmas Season will be filled
with the peace and joy of Christ and that the New Year will bring much health and prosperity for all. To
everyone, best wishes for a joyous celebration of the wonderful hope represented by the birth of our Lord,
the Prince of Peace. Many blessings for the new year ahead!
