The team progressed so well as the day went on, skating and passing like a team that had been together for years. Highlights included two shut outs during the first day of competition. The team came up just short in the consolation final, capturing the silver medal. The St. Julia Jr. Ice Hockey team members are: Michael C., Daniel C., Nicholas E., Reed M., Ryan M., Gavyn M., Elias N., Mark O., Ethan P., Patrick P., David R., Jacob M., and Marcus Z., Ethan P., and Matthew O. Mr. Morrice and Mr. Monahan thank the team for all their hard work, determination and sportsmanship over the two day of the tournament. SPEAK UP GRANT St. Julia applied for a grant through the Speak Up Project and we were accepted! This means that we have been given $1000. We will be using the money to purchase a green screen that will be part of a multimedia room. Stay tuned for more about our multimedia room. JUNIOR BOYS BASKETBALL Congratulations to our Junior boys basketball team for an amazing effort at our mini-pod tournament that was held @ St. Veronica on February 19, 2016. Our boys showed grit, determination, and heart. Ms. Gasparini and Ms. Cheong are very proud of you! Team members are: Aaron D., Bartek S., Nicholas P., Matthew B., Ethan P., Hunter N., Adrian K., Andrew D., Zachary D., Troy Q., and Braeden T. JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL The St. Julia Jr. girls basketball team recently competed in the mini-pod tournament. The girls played great basketball but came up just short in their attempt to qualify for the Mississauga Brampton Central Family Tournament. The team gave their opponents trouble with their great defense, and progressed significantly over the course of the season. Good luck girls with Intermediate basketball next season! Team members are: Sofia L., Emily P., Evelyn C., Raquel L., Megan, Claire M., Nneamaka E., and Abby S. Mr. Morrice and Ms. Freitas thank the team for all their hard work over the season! Next year you will find the “keys” to success! SCIENCE OLYMPICS Recently St. Julia competed in the Science Olympics at Pauline Vanier Elementary School. During the competition the participants competed against other schools in time sensitive and complex hands-on tasks. The team did well throughout the day. This year each individual task was awarded with medals, and St. Julia came through in the newspaper bridge competition winning the gold medal. Their bridge design supported more weight than any of the other 15 schools designs! Team members are: Nicholas L., Emily, P., Daniel C., Lucas J., and Dean D. Mr. Morrice is proud of your team work, efforts, and how well you represented St. Julia during the day. EQAO DATES Grade 3 & 6 students will be participating in province wide testing from May 25 – June 8, 2016. It is very important that student’s attendance is punctual. We ask that parents of students in these grades ensure that their children are in attendance during these weeks. IMMUNIZATION The Region of Peel Health Department has informed the school that some of you will be receiving an "Immunization Record Review" letter. If you receive one of these letters, it is because the Region does not have a complete immunization record on file for your child. Please read the letter carefully and contact Peel Health if you have further questions or compliance documentation to submit. You may contact the Region of Peel at (905) 799-7700 or by visiting their website www.immunizepeel.ca REGION OF PEEL We have released our Winter Edition of the School Health Newsletter, which highlights the Healthy Schools Partnership between Peel Public Health and both the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board as well as the Peel District School Board. The newsletter also includes some great healthy eating tips to help support the upcoming nutrition month in March, a new P.A.L.S. game, information regarding free dental care, and much more! BATTERY RECYCLING PROGRAM Did you know that steel in batteries can be recycled? About 25% of single-use alkaline batteries are made up of steel. These once useful, but now discarded items pollute the soil, and contaminate our drinking water. St. Julia is excited to announce that we will be participating in a battery recycling program. St. Julia is an Eco school, committed to proper recycling and conservation of natural resources. We have now also committed to recycling household batteries! This recycling program will begin in March. Through the recycling program we will be able to "recover 100% of the steel in each battery for reuse. 60% of the battery is made up of a combination of materials like zinc, manganese and potassium. These materials are all earth elements. This combination of material is 100% recovered and reused as a micro-nutrient in the production of fertilizer to grow corn." http://www.rawmaterials.com/ ATLANTIC SALMON HATCHERY PROGRAM We are excited to once again be participating in The Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program which offers a classroom Hatchery Program. Salmon raised in the hatchery become part of the overall number released into the target streams annually. The goals of the program are to: · engage students in a large-scale, historic restoration effort · deliver messages on habitat, stewardship, and biodiversity using Atlantic salmon and the Greenbelt as tangible examples of those concepts · foster a sense of ownership and stewardship towards an environment that now has “their” fish · achieve a broader public awareness for the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program as the students take their experiences with the classroom hatcheries back to their families and communities The grade two students will have the opportunity to “adopt” a salmon and release it into the Credit River in the late spring. The incubator is placed in Mrs. Di Iorio’s class and will be open for all grade two students to see and share in the experience. We hope to continue this partnership in subsequent years so more students will have this opportunity. CRIMINAL REFERNCE CHECKS AND ANNUAL DECLARATIONS Volunteers are very much appreciated by staff and students at St. Julia. Board policy states that volunteers that come into regular contact with students must have a Criminal Reference Check completed through Peel Police. If you plan to volunteer for trips, driving students or helping students in the school, please drop by the office to pick up a form. There is no charge for a Criminal Reference Check when you are a volunteer. An annual Criminal Declaration must be completed on a yearly basis by all volunteers. Those volunteers who require the annual declaration completed will be notified by the school.
