A Mother’s Day Prayer
Principal
P. Nichols
I thank you, Creator of us all, for my mother.
I thank you that she gave me life and nurtured me
all those years. She gave me my faith, helping me
to know you and to know Jesus and his ways.
She taught me how to love and how to sacrifice for
others. She taught me that it was okay to cry and
that I should always tell the truth.
Bless her with the grace she needs and which you
want to give her today. Help her to feel precious
in your eyes today to know that I love her.
Give her strength and courage, compassion and
Peace. Bless her this day with your love.

WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN EVENING
On Tuesday, May 13, we would like to welcome parents
and guardians for our Parent Information Night
regarding “Full-Day Kindergarten” starting at St Julia in
September 2014. This night will be aimed at answering
parent questions and concerns about this exciting new
program. We realize that it is important to have the young
ones come in and see the school. This will be addressed
during our Welcome to Kindergarten evening on Tuesday,
May 13. Hope to see you on both these dates!
MOVING
Just a reminder…if you are moving before the end of the
year or over the summer please inform the school office as
soon as possible so that the class lists may accurately
reflect the number of students enrolled. Also, if new
neighbors have moved in it would be appreciated if you
could let them know that we are accepting registrations for
next September and that they are welcome to drop by the
office for a registration package. When moving to a new
school transfer papers from your current school are needed.
The office requires a few days to process these.

CROWNING OF MARY
On Friday, May 23, 2014, St. Julia School will celebrate the
“Crowning of Mary” with two beautiful and child centered
gatherings in our school gym. We will begin with our first
celebration at 9:00 am for the Primary division followed by
the Junior and Intermediate divisions at 10:45 am. This
culminating activity reflects all of the hard work the rosary
Apostolate volunteers have done with our students to teach
them the hymns of Mary and the prayers of the Rosary. We
thank the Rosary Apostolate or their hard work and
dedication to the students of St. Julia.
INTERMEDIATE BOYS BASKETBALL
St. Julia’s senior boys basketball team concluded their season
with many valuable lessons learned in leadership and team
building. Coaches Mr. Gallo and Mr. Turner were very
impressed with their level of intensity and team work
throughout the tournament. The boys began the season on a
strong footing, but were later challenged in high intensity,
strategic game play. Our players displayed a hard work ethic
during practices and reflected good sportsmanship in all of
their games. Great job St. Julia! We would like to thank all of
the following players for their hard work and commitment:
Mathew M., Owen R., Aden D., Josiah D., Carter B., Justin
C., Matthew C., Justin K., and Marco P.
INTERMEDIATE GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Intermediate Girls Basketball Team recently completed
their season. They girls played four exciting games, and were
stiff competition for every team that they played. By the end of
their season the girls were playing stifling defense, and scoring
on lay-ups with ease. Mr. Monahan and Mr. Morrice
thoroughly enjoyed coaching the girls and hope the girls also
enjoyed their season. Team members included: Julia N.,
Christie L., Zoe O., Erica S., Victoria P., Klaudia G., and
Jessica A.
KISS N RIDE
Please continue to use the Kiss n Ride for the morning drop
off. We request that parents do not exit their car to bring
children to the gate. We have a staff member on duty that can
assist with this.
AROUND THE HALLS
Volunteer Appreciation Tea
The staff and students of St. Julia would like to show their appreciation for all the support we have received throughout the year
from all our volunteers. If you have volunteered in any capacity this year, we would like you to join us for a reception at the
school on June 10, 2014 @ 2:00 pm in our school library. Please RSVP the main office to confirm.
CATS AND DOGS
St Julia Catholic School will be offering a parent information
session entitled: “Tips for Parents on How to Manage Worries
and Fears in Children”. This information session, presented
by your school psychologist Dr. Sabrina Moraes, is designed to
provide parents with more information on childhood worries
and fears, tips for parents on how to help children manage fears
and worries, and information on community resources should
your child require additional support. This parent session will
take place on May 22 at 7:30 pm. Light refreshments will be
provided.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
A special thanks to School Council for providing spiritual items
to students in Grade 4, 6 and 8 recently. Grade 4s received
pocket prayer books, Grade 6 students received scapulars and
Grade 8 students received Teen Prayer cards.
CURRICULUM CORNER
What’s the deal with descriptive feedback?
One of our school learning teams is experimenting with the idea
of using descriptive feedback instead of number grades on
formative assessments. Studies have shown that precise use of
descriptive feedback is far more effective in improving student
understanding and achievement than grades. While grades are
useful for determining a student’s overall achievement of
summative tasks, they are less useful when the student is still on
the learning journey. Let’s use an example. Imagine a student is
being instructed on how to do a lay-up in basketball. They will
be coached on Monday to Thursday and ‘tested’ on Friday. On
Tuesday, they attempt the lay-up and show only limited ability.
Is it more useful for that student to receive a grade of 3 out of 10,
or to forego the grade and receive detailed descriptive feedback
of how they need to improve? The ‘test’ after all isn’t until
Friday. Clearly, the student would benefit from receiving
detailed coaching on how to improve, rather than a premature
and negative number grade. The same principles apply to core
academic subjects. Furthermore, data demonstrates that if
descriptive feedback is combined with letter grades, the students
generally ignore the descriptive feedback and focus only on the
number. Hence the reason why the numbers are being left off.
Already this approach is yielding results, with contributions from
Teacher, Peer, Student and even parents.
