Library News! The grade 4 and 6 students have been busy the last few weeks, each taking in a visit at the Courtneypark Library. Grade six students were given an orientation on using library print and e-resources and grade 4 students were introduced to the library's "Read to Succeed" program, a Mississauga library program to encourage reading for pleasure. All students were given a tour of the library and an opportunity to check out a book. The junior students enjoyed their mornings at the local library and look forward to their next visit! SCIENCE OLYMPICS Recently St. Julia competed in the Mississauga-Brampton Central Science Olympics. During competition the participants competed against other schools in time sensitive and complex hands on tasks. The St. Julia Science Olympics team participants were: Nicholas L., Jack K., Emmanuel E., Kevin I., and Natalie F. The team was successful in completing all three of the tasks, and finished in the top tier of the competition for two of them. All in all, the day was a great success, and Mr. Morrice and St. Julia would be proud of their team work, successes, and how well they represented St. Julia at the event. This month the BLAST team has continued to share a their weekly anti-bullying tips and advice each morning over the announcements. We have received letters in our BLAST box and continue to encourage students to share their experiences and own advice each week. ANTI-BULLYING TIP OF THE MONTH: Be Cool in the Moment. Stay calm and confident. Don't show the bully that you're sad or mad. Ignore the bully and walk away. Remember: Fighting back can make bullying worse. CRIMINAL REFERNCE CHECKS AND ANNUAL DECLARATIONS Volunteers are very much appreciated by staff and students at St. Julia. Board policy states that volunteers that come into regular contact with students must have a Criminal Reference Check completed through Peel Police. If you plan to volunteer for trips, driving students or helping students in the school, please drop by the office to pick up a form. There is no charge for a Criminal Reference Check when you are a volunteer. An annual Criminal Declaration must be completed on a yearly basis by all volunteers. Those volunteers who require the annual declaration completed will be notified by the school. Thanks to those who made the pancakes including Jen Fabrizi, Ruby Zgheib, Sandra Lima, Lina Attieh, Sam Pisani, Paul Jarvis, Silvia Barajas, Cathy Runstedler, Chris Ferrao, Teresa Persechini, Grace Selva, Cheri Bersinic and Siobhan Kukolic. Thanks to Anita Menezes and Stephanie Medina for lending your griddles, thanks to the staff who brought griddles, thanks to Mr. Harrison and Mrs. Corrente for co-ordinating the parents and students, and thanks to the students who delivered the pancakes. Thanks to Tony Lima for paying the $100 for the pancake batter which was donated at cost by Bobby's Hideaway in Streetsville (bobbyshideaway.com). Thanks to Tony Kukolic for picking up and dropping off the batter. And thanks to our anonymous donator who gave the plates, napkins, cutlery and syrup for all. Each student brought in $2 to donate to Share Life. Happy Shrove Tuesday! BUS LANES & PARKING Please be aware that the bus lane at the front of the school is designated for Bus Drop off & Pick-Up only. Sometimes the buses are late arriving or departing from the school and this lane must be vacant so that the buses can make their way to and from the school. Buses usually arrive before 9:00 am, during the lunch hour and after school. Parents are asked to use the Kiss n’ Ride lane to drop off their children. We also ask that parents do not idle in the parking lot, so staff members may have spots accessible to them when arriving at school. Thank you for your co-operation. ARE YOU MOVING? If you are planning a move or have already moved, please let us know. You are required to complete new assessment forms even if you move within our school boundaries. If you are moving to a new school we will give you a Transfer Form to take with you to the new school. If you are moving but would like your child to remain at St. Julia, please submit your request in writing. We will be preparing classes for September 2014 and this information will be helpful in determining class sizes. In the past, we have had to reorganize classes in September due to unexpected transfers. Franciscan Media Catalog - Messengers of God's Mercy Please refer to the link below to download the Catholic update Newsletter for the month of March: Franciscan Media Catalog Or copy this address into your web browser: http://catalog.franciscanmedia.org STUDENT INSURANCE Just a reminder that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board requires parents to confirm that they have invested in accident/life insurance for the 2013-2014 school year for their child to participate in out-of-school excursions and/or extra-curricular or sports activities. As required by the Education Act and the Ministry of Education, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board annually provides parents with information about cost-effective student accident insurance coverage via student courier. Enrolment in this program is voluntary, however the board encourages parents to take advantage of the inexpensive insurance coverage, especially if their child/children participate in sports, excursions/field trips, or, if parents do not have dental insurance coverage. These insurance pamphlets were sent home in September. If you still require a pamphlet, please let the office know. Full-Day Kindergarten St Julia is pleased to offer full-day kindergarten (FDK) starting in September 2014. During the regular school day, children will be involved in many different kinds of activities designed to help young learners explore, discover and grow. They will have opportunities to initiate learning and play, as well as take part in more structured play-based learning under the guidance of a teacher and a designated early childhood educator (DECE). Through play-based learning and small group instruction, children develop a strong foundation for learning in all areas, including language and math, engage in healthy physical activities and the arts, and develop socially and emotionally through interaction with their peers and the educators who guide them. Through informal meetings, parent conferences or written reports, parents will receive regular updates that include comments on the child's learning. The reports also include suggestions for parents to support their child's learning.
