This assessment is considered a “snapshot” of the children’s performance based on their respective grade level expectations. St. Julia has un-interrupted Math/ Literacy blocks in both the Primary and Junior divisions. The Primary Math/Literacy block is 2 hours and the Junior block is 1 ½ hours. We have purchased the Levelled Literacy reading intervention program for Kindergarten–grade 3. We continue to provide time for teachers to plan with their grade level partners for consistency and use a variety of resources (manipulative, anchor charts, math dictionaries, PRIME, PM, CASI) to meet the needs of the learner. Teachers continue to use data driven instruction to group students accordingly. We continue to focus on guided practice and 3 part lesson planning. Grade 3 Year two was very successful. We scored very well in our evaluation and are registered to participate in this worthwhile program again, this year. St. Julia staff and students continue to reduce waste at school by making our own lunches to reduce packaging waste and use reusable water bottles instead of single-use water bottles to reduce garbage we ask students to participate in the Boomerang snack and lunch activity; taking their organic waste (orange peels, banana skins crusts etc. home to be composted. Last year saw the beginning of our outdoor eco-classroom with five 7 m high Maple trees donated by HoffMann-LaRoche Ltd., and this year we will add some more trees and amphitheater bench seating to complete the project. This project provides a shady quiet relaxing space for the students to read, talk and sit and enjoy God's green earth. Thanks to School Council and all the parents for their support. Stay Green! St. Julia is one of 300 schools participating in an exciting, province-wide Student Work Study Initiative. This study focuses on students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 to determine what types of conditions enable them to be successful learners. My name is Tara Kramaric and I am a Student Work Study Teacher who will be visiting select classrooms throughout the school year. I will be collaborating with classroom teachers to collect and analyze samples of student work to be combined with samples from other schools across Ontario. Please be advised, I will not be evaluating student work in any way and all collected samples will remain anonymous. The results of this study will form the basis of future resource development and teacher training across Ontario. I look forward to being a part of the St. Julia community in an effort to learn more about students and their learning. AROUND THE HALLS LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES We have conducted 1 of the 2 Lockdown drills for the year. Please note that if we are directed to have a real lockdown by the Police department you will hear the bell continuously ringing outside. We will conduct our second drill in the spring. VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL All visitors, including parents and former students must check in at the main office before proceeding to any other area of the school. If you are dropping off a lunch for your child, please leave it at the table by the entrance where there are pens and labels available for identification. We thank the school community for dropping off lunches at the 11:45 am bell, to limit the amount of doorbell interruptions to the office. If you are picking up your child early, the best practice is to send a note to the teacher with the time for your child to come to the office, this way we avoid interrupting the classes. Please report to the office and sign them out. WELCOME & GOODBYE We wish Mrs. Hatcher all the best as she begins her maternity leave. We welcome Mr. Gallo who will be teaching the grade 8 class. SCHOOL COUNCIL CORNER Congratulations to the following parents who have been acclaimed as parent members of our School Council for 20132014. If you would like to be added to the St. Julia parent volunteer email list to be kept in the loop about events, fundraisers and times when we need help, please email: siobhan_kukolic@yahoo.com Mrs. Stypka has received a permanent teaching position at St. Pio of Pietrelcina school. We wish her all the best and welcome Ms. Child who will be teaching the grade 6 class. CROSS COUNTRY The St. Julia Cross Country team has been running hard at lunch boosting their cardio levels and endurance in preparation for the Mississauga-Brampton Central Cross Country Meet at Chinguacousy Park in Brampton, on Tuesday, October 29, 2013. The coaches have been impressed by the team's passion and devotion. Good Luck team! World Teacher Day On October 4, 2013 we celebrated World Teachers Day, a day specifically designated to recognize the contribution of teachers throughout our education system. World teachers day was inaugurated in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the UNESCO/ILO. More than 100 countries celebrate world teachers day. At St. Julia School we are very fortunate to have so many dedicated individuals who work to provide for the education of your children. Thank you to our School Council for providing a delicious cake from Cake Royale for the teachers to enjoy. HALLOWEEN & BOOGIE-A-THON This is a very exciting time for children as they walk in their neighbourhood trick-or-treating. At school, students will be reminded of the safety rules so they will have a fun yet safe evening. Students are allowed to wear costumes during the Boogie-A-Thon on Thursday, October 31, 2013, but masks, "scary make-up" and any loose items such as toy swords are not permitted. This year the St. Julia community is asking parents (with the assistance of their children) to donate Halloween candy the week of November 4-8 (right after Halloween). The candy will be sent off to Africa, through Dr. Simone’s “Canadian Food for Children.” Warehouse, to help “nourish” sick children who are too sick to take medications. The most important aspect of this time of year centers on the two great Feast Days. November 1, is All Saints Day, where we honour the Saints of our church and November 2, is All Souls Day where we spend time reflecting and remembering those who have passed away. FRONT DOOR MONITORING SYSTEM The front door monitoring system has now been activated. All doors to the school remain locked during the school day. For parents and visitors to access the school, please ring the buzzer once and when prompted please state your name and the reason for your visit. As I am sure you can appreciate, the office is an extremely busy place and our first priority is to our students and their safety. It is important that students arrive to school on time and join in our morning exercises. We begin morning announcements and prayers promptly at 8:50 a.m. (8:55 a.m. in the winter). The entire school pauses to pray and reflect as we begin our day. We ask that students arriving late please wait patiently until we have concluded our prayers and opening exercises. We also ask that parents pack lunches for their children to minimize the traffic during the lunch hour. If parents choose to drop off lunches, we ask that they do so as close to 11:45 a.m. as possible so we can have all parents enter at the same time, drop off the lunch and therefore minimize disruptions. PARISH NEWS EDGE NIGHT EDGE meets Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 7pm and LIFETEEN meets Friday, October 25, 2013 at 7pm. Have any questions or concerns? Call Ana DaCosta at saint.joes.youth@gmail.com. SCHOOL MASS Our Opening of School Year Mass was held on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at St. Joseph’s parish. It was a beautiful celebration of community. Thank you to all the parents who joined us for this Eucharistic celebration. Special thank you to Fr. Kim who presided over the mass and our talented St. Julia Choir for providing the lovely music. PARENT MEETINGS FOR FIRST CURRICULUM CORNER COMMUNION/CONFIRMATION Parents whose children ARE IN Grades 2 and who will Have you ever heard of the ‘flipped classroom?’ It’s abe receiving thebecoming Sacraments of First Holypopular Communion at our concept that’s increasingly in schools Parish, must attend The idea is that instead of hearing across North America. frontal teaching at school and doing homework and projects at home, students listen to content at home, and do most of their work at school, in front of their teachers. As a result, the teacher has more time to circulate and assist with small-group work and practical skill development when they are not tied to the front of the classroom giving lessons. Have you spotted the problem? How are the students supposed to get the content at home? The answer is that the teacher directs them to pre-recorded content that they or someone else has already uploaded to the internet. The teacher’s lesson can be taken at the student’s own pace and even re-watched or rewound if needed. As our school becomes increasingly equipped with 21st century learning equipment, it’s an idea that could have some implications here at St. Julia. Why don’t you try with your child? Find a topic that your child is about to do in school, and see if you can find a teaching video on-line (you probably will be able to!). Send your child in to school armed with the knowledge that they will need for the day ahead! PARENT INFORMATION RUN FOR RUTH On Wednesday, October 9, 2013 all the students and staff at St. Julia participated in the annual Run for Ruth. The day began with the entire school gathering around the Peace Garden for a beautiful liturgy. Throughout the day, each class spent some quite reflection time around the garden before beginning their walk/run around the neighbourhood. Together the school community raised $878.02 which will go towards brain cancer research and to expand our Peace Garden. A special thank you goes to Lunch Moms for their donation of cookies to the students. Thank you to the entire community for your generous support. STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS 2013-2014 A big thank you and congratulations goes out to all the candidates that participated in this year’s student council elections. Congratulations to the following students who will make up this year’s executive council: Parliamentary Secretary – Shania N. Minister of social Justice- Ava M. Minister of student affairs-Angela V. Minister of Finance-Nikita D. Deputy Prime Minister-Chloe C. Prime Minister-Kaitlin M. ROSARY APOSTOLATE The Rosary Apostolate in the Schools program is a lay organization of dedicated volunteers who go into the Catholic schools to teach students how to pray the Rosary. The aim is to lead students to love Jesus with the Heart of Mary and to help them know that they belong to a greater family... the Holy Catholic Church. Every month from October to April, the Rosary Visitors go into the classrooms and present a theme followed by an age appropriate prayer of the Rosary. The visits conclude in May with a Marian celebration which includes one of the church approved apparitions of our Blessed Mother. Since Pope Benedict XVI has declared this year (Oct. 11/12 to Nov. 24/13), the Year of Faith, our themes will focus on understanding the 12 articles of the Catholic faith summarized in the Apostles Creed. The Rosary Apostolate program has the full support of the Archdiocese of Toronto. New volunteers are always welcome! FRENCH IMMERSION INFORMATION MEETING Senior Kindergarten parents/guardians, who wish to enroll their child in a Grade 1 French Immersion class for September, 2014 are invited to attend an information meeting at: French Immersion centres St Gertrude St Pio of Pietrelcina Our Lady of Providence St Angela Merici St Joachim Divine Mercy St Elizabeth Seton St Margaret of Scotland Session location Date and time St Pio of Pietrelcina Tuesday November 19, 2013 7:00 p.m. St Angela Merici Wednesday November 20, 2013 7:00 p.m. St Elizabeth Seton Thursday November 21, 2013 7:00 p.m. AROUND THE HALLS PROGRESS REPORT The progress report for grades 1-8 will be sent home on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. It provides initial information, early in the school year, about a student’s progress. It is designed to show a student’s development of the learning skills and work habits, as well as a student’s general progress in working towards the achievement of curriculum expectations. For these reasons, the November Progress Report does not include marks or comments in all subject areas. While some parents may be invited to attend an interview on the evening of November 7, 2013 to discuss their child’s progress, there is not an expectation that all parents will attend an interview after receipt of the Progress report. If you would like to meet with your child’s teacher, you may, of course, request an interview. All parents will be invited to attend an interview with their child’s teacher after the issue of the first Provincial Report Card on the evening of February 6, 2014. Information regarding interview times will be sent home to all parents soon. SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT TEACHER This year St. Julia will have a Special Assignment teacher to assist with the teaching of Literacy. The SAT will be working in partnership with the classroom teacher to implement the Catholic School Learning Plan. Ms. Inglis will be working with groups of students alongside the classroom teacher to target the learning needs of students. This teacher may be working in your child’s classroom from time to time throughout the year. We would like to welcome Ms. G. Inglis as our SAT this year. We are excited to provide a collaborative teaching opportunity for all of the students. Our goal is rooted in the faithful practice that each individual is a child of God and belongs to our Catholic community of learners. “Each one called by name.” Isaiah 43:1 MISSED WORK DUE TO ABSENCES When children are absent from school they miss important lessons and work that extends from these teachings. If a child is absent due to illness we kindly request that children get the needed rest they require so they can come back to school healthy. The teachers will not be sending daily work home for your son/daughter to “catch up”. They will spend time assisting students on their return to school. If your son/daughter is absent due to extended illness, please contact Mrs. Nichols to discuss some available options. ILLNESS Children who come to school are expected to participate fully in the class program. This includes taking recess breaks with the class. If your child needs to remain indoors for recesses a medical note should be provided. CRIMINAL REFERNCE CHECK-CRC REQUIRED This is a reminder that everyone volunteering must complete a criminal record check. For individuals who are volunteering in our school board there is no charge for this service. Forms are available at the office. The form must be dropped off in person. The completed CRC will be mailed to you when completed. Please request a receipt when dropping off an application for a CRC and we will keep that on file until the CRC is completed. Thank you to the many volunteers who have already completed this procedure. We appreciate the time that you are able to spend helping in the school. Anyone else who is intending to help throughout the year with driving teams, supervising trips or helping in the classroom are requested to begin this process right away. EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event that it is necessary to evacuate for emergency reasons we will evacuate to St. Marcellinus Secondary at the corner of Mavis and Courtney Park Drive. Your child will remain at St. Marcellinus until we make contact with you or an emergency contact. Please inform the office of any change to emergency contacts, phone numbers or address changes. KISS AND RIDE We appreciate your cooperation when using the Kiss and Ride to drop off your children. We have a staff member on duty to assist with the flow of traffic and to make sure students are safely dropped off. We kindly request that you continue to drive up to the beginning of the Kiss and Ride to drop off your child rather than at the playground entrances. For safety reasons, please have your children exit on the side closest to the walkway as cars are passing on the left hand side. BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION DAY Our bus drivers make sure students get to and from school safely. Wednesday, October 23, 2013 marks Bus Driver Appreciation Day! Thank you on behalf of the students and staff at St. Julia School. LIBRARY NEWS It’s been a busy September in the library! We hosted a very successful Scholastic Book Fair and sold $5733.25 worth of books! Wow! This means, we are able to order $2560.08 worth of books to support our school literacy program. Thank you to all students, parents, and teachers that came out to support our Scholastic Book Fair! Just a reminder to students who still have outstanding books from the last school year- please return your books to our library as soon as possible or submit a replacement fee if the book is lost. Thank you! AROUND THE HALLS YARD DUTY Please remember teacher supervision, in both the main yard and kindergarten courtyard does not commence until 8:30 a.m. Afternoon Kindergarten students are not supervised until 12:30 p.m. in the kindergarten courtyard. Parents are asked not to drop off their children prior to these times as students will be unsupervised. PEDICULOSIS Head lice are tiny insects about the size of a sesame seed. They move from one person to another by head-to-head (hair to hair) contact. They cannot jump to another person’s head. Children who get head lice may feel embarrassed or ashamed, but they shouldn’t. Anyone can get head lice. It has nothing to do with being dirty or clean, and lice do not spread disease or illness. Unfortunately, children who have head lice may be teased by others. Be sensitive to your child’s feelings. How to Find Head Lice: Severe itching is the most common sign of head lice. Look for head lice and tiny white or grey coloured eggs called nits. Nits look like tiny water drops and are stuck to the hair. They are hard to remove. Check your own head and the heads of everyone else who lives with you. Tell your child’s school or daycare centre and afterschool program(s) if your child has head lice. Also, tell the parents of your child’s close friends to check their child for head lice. If you find live head lice, treat right away. If live lice are found treatment is required. Ask your local pharmacist about the best recommended treatment. If no nits or live lice are found do not treat. Check your child’s head every 2 days for 10 days. If live lice are found within those 10 days, go back to checking once a week for nits and/or lice. Removing nits is optional as nits do not spread from headto-head. Remember to check the head of everyone in the household, including your own. The three trees were donated by The Patton Family, Improvement Renovations Inc., and Councillor George Carlson. We're just waiting on the School Board to plant them and parent Matthew Grittani is getting them for us wholesale which is $300 each instead of $550 each. We are also hoping to get some log benches installed in our EcoClassroom through the School Board. The Boo-gie-a-thon pledge forms will be going home for Thanksgiving weekend. Please have your children ask their relatives for pledges (no door-to-door canvassing) and keep in mind that this is our only fundraiser for the year. Please send cheques only, made out to St. Julia, and please send one cheque per student. If a cheque is sent for the entire family, the child who hands in the cheque will get all the credit for classroom and division prizes. Thanks for your understanding as we try to streamline the counting process for the small group of parents who are available during the day to count. Thanks to Elizabeth D'Amore who is spearheading the Boo-gie-a-thon prizes, Karina Gigante and Diane Akam who are spearheading the Boo-gie-a-thon decorating and Jennifer Fabrizi who is spearheading the Boo-gie-a-thon counting. Also, thanks to all the parents who are volunteering their time in one of those three areas to make this a memorable event for our students and a wonderful way to raise money to enrich the educational experience at St. Julia. A Year of Virtues At St. Julia, virtue formation contributes to a healthy positive learning environment by fostering a climate in which all members feel safe, confident and hope-filled about themselves, their relationships and their futures.
