Read with a pencil, jotting notes, and sticky notes about characters, setting, details, or summarize what you read Read, to develop a theory, (BIG IDEA) and revise your theory as you read on. “The author wants to teach me that…” Pay attention to secondary character’s and their ACTIONS, THOUGHTS, and WORDS. Deepen thinking by investigating the power: Who has the power? What are the signs of power? What kinds of resistance exist in the story? Read nonfiction text to support understanding of the time period in history. Identify and look for THEME in the books that they are reading. Work with book club members focusing on achieving DEEP CLUB TALK: Active listening Compromise Interactive and supportive conversations with all members Talk about texts to “grow ideas” about them – texts might change our minds, and affect our lives.
