Harrison Vice-Principal She listened to the Holy Spirit in her heart and responded with her “yes”. She did all God asked of her. She showed us how to live as followers of Jesus. She gave thanks and praise to God for His love for her. A. Sodhi Secretary N. Hajdinjak Parish St. Francis Xavier Parish Pastor God our Father, we come together to celebrate Mary, the mother of Jesus. She was born and lived her whole life free from sin. She always did what you wanted her to do. May we listen to your will and say “yes” with joy as Mary did. We pray in the name of Jesus through the Holy Spirit. AMEN Msgr. We may share biological families or national identity or cultural and ethnic identity but we are all very unique and distinct creations. God breaks the mold every time! ARE YOU MOVING? The virtue of acceptance describes our ability to look at the attitudes and actions of those around us and consider each person without judging them. The virtue of acceptance means that we look beyond what we see- a person’s skin colour, ethnic background, religion, age, gender and see a person created and loved by God. CREATING CLASSES FOR SEPTEMBER 2016 Class formation is a complex procedure, which takes into consideration not only the needs of the individual child, but frames those needs in the context of the larger classroom group. In each class we strive for a balance of learning styles, a balance of gender, a balance of learning needs and a cross-section of abilities. The current teachers, support staff and administration take part in the process. If you as a parent wish to provide input into the process, please take into consideration the following guidelines: Input must be made in writing to the Principal no later than May 6, 2016. Please frame requests in terms of educational contexts, e.g. your child’s learning needs/style; information not already known to the school; best learning environment, relevant history, sibling concerns. Please do not make requests for or against specific teachers. Please do not ask that your child be put in a straight grade. From our ECO TEAM: CONGRATULATIONS! During the month of March, the San Lorenzo Ruiz EcoTeam helped spark awareness about the importance of Peel drinking water. Our club members researched numerous facts and benefits of clean drinking water. Most importantly, they communicated how privileged we are to have access to clean drinking water in Peel Region. At the end of our Great Gulp campaign, the students and staff at San Lorenzo Ruiz took part in a school-wide, synchronized drink of tap water from reusable water bottles. By participating in this campaign, organized by the Region of Peel, our school was entered into a draw to win a tap water refill station. San Lorenzo Ruiz was the winner of the one of the two water refill stations that are drawn for DPCDSB schools. We hope that our campaign created a memorable learning experience for our students to become stewards of the Earth by gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of drinking water. SCHOOL BOOKS Please take a few moments to check around your home to see if there are any San Lorenzo Ruiz textbooks or library books. As you can appreciate, these books are expensive to replace, especially during these economic times. Please send any found books to the school with your child. We thank you for your help. LOST AND FOUND Many items have accumulated in our school. Parents are welcome to visit the school to check for materials belonging to their child(ren). They are in the Lost & Found box in the front foyer. National Pink Day: April 13th The staff and students celebrated National Pink Day by participating in the Board Wide Flash Mob. National Pink Day highlights the issues of bullying and brings a deeper awareness to those affected by it. It also helps to educate students on how to deal with issues of bullying. Students and staff also wore pink bowties to honour the great work our Principal, Mr. Harrison, has done over the years to ensure that San Lorenzo Ruiz is a safe and caring environment for all students. CONGRATULATIONS MR. WOS We would like to congratulate Mr. Wos and his wife for the arrival of their daughter on April 14, 2016. Chess News On Thursday, March 31st our Primary, Junior and Intermediate Chess teams competed in the Mississauga Brampton Family of Schools Chess Tournament at St. Gertrude School. It was a long, intense and extremely exciting day with 14 schools represented. The SLR Primary Team finished as Family Champions, with the Junior and Intermediate teams each placing 2nd overall. This excellent result meant that we were able to take all 3 teams to the next level of competition. The Dufferin-Peel Board Chess Tournament took place on Friday, April 15th, with all seven families of schools sending their top two teams to compete. We were thrilled to be part of this amazing day. After 7 hard fought games our Primary and Junior teams were able to move to the final level of competition and Semi-Finals. At the end of some hard-fought games our Primary Team finished 3rd in the Board, with the Juniors finishing 8th and Intermediates finishing 10th. We were particularly impressed with the overall improvement in the level of chess our students are playing, and the very good sportspersonship they demonstrated at all times. These results could not have happened without the tremendous support and encouragement of all the parents; in particular, we had direct involvement and support from Mr. Charles, Mr. Lorenti and former SLR student Dale Rodrigues – all of whom came out to play chess with our students in the months leading up to competition. In addition, sincere thanks to staff members Ms. Starcevic, Mdme. Ventrice and Mrs. Chiavaroli for their many hours of supervision. - Ms. Faryniarz, Chess Coach 29 22 15 Happy Mother’s Day 8 Catholic Education Week begins 1 Sunday 31 Hep B and HPV shots EQAO: Gr 3 Pizza Lunch Subway Lunch Victoria Day NO SHCOOL 30 24 17 7 pm School Council Presentation by G.
