Name: ______________________
1. (18 points) See figure. A ball is thrown horizontally with initial velocity v0 = 20
m/s, from the roof of a building a h = 50 m tall. It lands on the ground, a distance d
from the base of the building.
a. Compute the time it takes the ball to hit the ground.

b. Compute the horizontal distance d from the base of the building at which the ball lands.
c. Compute the vertical (y component) of velocity vy just before the ball hits the ground.
What was its horizontal (x component) of velocity vx at that same time?
2. (12 points) See figure. A person drives a displacement D1 = 20 km in a Northerly direction,
then makes a turn and drives a displacement D2 = 45 km in a direction 50º South of East. Let
the x-axis be along the East-West direction and the y-axis be along the North-South direction.
Hint: To solve this problem, it might be useful to draw a sketch of the situation!
a. Compute the x and y components of D1 and D2.
b. Compute the magnitude of the total displacement D = D1 + D2 and the angle θ it makes
with the x-axis.
