Photosynthesis and Cell Respiration 7th Grade Science DO NOW FRIDAY • Study for your Law of Conservation of Mass Open Response. TODAYS PLAN • 2.3 Explain how plants give us food in the form of glucose (carbohydrates). • 3.1 Describe how animals use oxygen and glucose from plants in cellular respiration to get energy. • 3.3 Recognize how plants and animals are interdependent in the process of photosynthesis and respiration. TODAYS DO • We will complete the Analyzing Data Post-Test. • We will complete the Law of Conservation of Mass Open Response. DO NOW FRIDAY • Begin work on your Analyzing Data Post-Test. • Remember to do your best. This is a 100 point grade. • Do your own work. (Eyes on own paper.) • When finished, turn your test into the side cart and pick up an open response and sheet of notebook paper. Do not write on the open response. Be sure to label your answer A., B, C., etc. • When your open response is complete, turn it into the side cart also. • Then get an article and a bag of crayons for your table from the side cart. Complete the reading, coloring, and answer the questions quietly on your own. This is independent work. DO NOW FRIDAY • Begin work on your Analyzing Data Post-Test. • Remember to do your best. Explain how you know. A B Carbon dioxide (CO2) Water (H2O) Energy (ATP) TODAYS PLAN • Construct an explanation that describes photosynthesis’ role in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms. • Develop a model to describe how atoms are rearranged during chemical reactions to new molecules that you use to grow and use energy. • TODAYS DO • We will discuss photosynthesis and cell respiration. • We will complete a foldable as notes about photosynthesis and cell respiration. Photosynthesis Equation H2 O + CO2 O2 + C6H12O6 Write the equation and label it on your foldable. Photosynthesis Uses • What plants use • Reactants o Carbon dioxide (CO2) o Water (H2O) o Sunlight Write the formulas and draw the molecules on your foldable. Photosynthesis Makes • What plants make • Products o Oxygen (O2) o Glucose- sugar (C6H12O6) Write the formulas and draw the molecules on your foldable. Where does Photosynthesis happen? • Photosynthesis happens in plants in their leaves in a cell part called the chloroplast. • The chloroplast has a green pigment called chlorophyll that absorbs sunlight. Draw the chloroplast on your foldable. Purpose of Photosynthesis • To make oxygen and food for living things to get energy Cell Respiration Equation C6H12O6 + O2 CO2 + H2O + Energy Write the equation and label it on your foldable. Cell Respiration Uses • What animals use • Reactants o Glucose –sugar- C6H12O6 o Oxygen- O2 Write the formulas and draw the molecules on your foldable. Cell Respiration Makes • What animals breathe out • Products o Carbon dioxide (CO2) o Water (H2O) o Energy (ATP) Write the formulas and draw the molecules on your foldable. Where does Cell Respiration happen? • Cell Respiration happens in the cells of ALL living things in a cell part called the mitochondrion. MITOCHONDRION Draw the mitochondrion on your foldable. Purpose of Cell Respiration • To break down food to get the energy out for living things to use. How do Photosynthesis and Cell Respiration depend upon one another? • Photosynthesis uses the things that cell respiration makes (carbon dioxide and water). • Cell respiration uses the things that photosynthesis makes (glucose and oxygen). • Therefore, one could not happen without the other. How do Photosynthesis and Cell Respiration depend upon one another? • Plants need us for carbon dioxide and water. We need plants for oxygen and sugars (glucose). Draw this picture on the back of your foldable.
