October 12-16, 2015 Literacy This week our biggest focus is sequencing. Before Fall Break, we touched on story structure. The students know fiction stories go in a certain order: Beginning, middle, and end. Now, we are focusing more on the sequence of events and making sure we can put events in order using transition words such as first, next, then, and last. We will be reading the realistic Calendar October 12 - College Shirt Day & Book Order Due October 13 – End of 9 Weeks October 20 – Report Cards Go Out October 22 & 23 – I will be out these two days to travel with a group of our BETA students to a leadership summit in Sevierville, Tennessee October 30 – Halloween Party November 2 & 3 – No School fiction story “Rosa and Blanca” on Monday. Your child will have fluency homework to complete each night. Science We are beginning a new unit for the new 9 weeks in science! Our new unit is about slow changes to Earth’s surface. You may want to review the fast changes that your child learned earlier in the school year, such as volcanos, earthquakes, and landslides. We are going to start by learning a little more about rocks, minerals, and soil, then move into learning about weathering and erosion. We will be completing an experiment at the end of the week to demonstrate how water and wind cause slow changes to the land. Birthdays There are no October birthdays, but if you send me an email saying you read the newsletter for this week, your child can clip up! Reminders This year, Lori Crowe is our room mom and she will be contacting you very soon about our upcoming Halloween Party and how you can contribute. If you have any questions, please let either of us know!
