OTHER OPPORTUNITIES
ST. JOSEPH
SECONDARY SCHOOL
The differentiated instructional approach here at St. Joseph allows for students to go beyond curriculum expectations. Students are given the opportunity to challenge
themselves against other students across our region and
province by writing contests produced by the University of
Waterloo and CHAMP (Credit Humber Association of
Mathematics Promotion).
Math Help Centre
A peer tutoring program is offered Monday through Thursday in Math Help Centre. This after school progam allows
the tutor to receive community service hours while the
tutee gets some fantastic one to one attention. Sign up is
done through our guidance department.

“If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.”
W. Blake
Mathematics is at the core of many fields of study. It is for this
reason that the importance of mathematical success has become such an important issue with the
Ministry of Education. Mathematical
literacy is not only the ability to work
through arithmetic questions, but the
ability to understanding relationships
and patterns that enable us to connect
real life situations with mathematical
models.
Assessment and Evaluation
Each course at St. Joseph Secondary has ongoing formative
student assessment to provide feedback to the students
throughout their learning experience.
The achievement categories for a student’s term grade, which
comprises 70% of the final mark, are:
Knowledge/Understanding:
30%
Communication:
20%
Applications:
30%
Thinking/Inquiry:
20%
The final 30% is made up of a Final Exam and a Culminating
Task.
PROGRAMS
All students must successfully obtain at least THREE (3) mathematics credits in order to receive their secondary high school diploma.

Making The Right Choice
Three levels of Mathematics courses are offered at St. Joseph
Secondary School:
Academic
Applied
Essential
This course enables students
to develop generalizations
of mathematical ideas and
methods through:
• exploration of applications
• the effective use of
technology
• abstract reasoning
Students will engage in abstract extensions of core
learning that will deepen
their mathematical knowledge and enrich their understanding.
This course enables students to develop mathematical ideas and methods
through:
• the exploration of
applications
• the effective use of
technology
• extended experiences
with hands-on activities.
Students will also have
opportunities to consolidate core skills and deepen
their understanding of key
mathematical concepts.
This course enables students to develop mathematical concepts through:
• modelling real life
situations.
• extended experiences
with hands-on activities.
Students deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts by experiencing real life, situational,
mathematical constructs.
