The Foundation for Mott Community College bear more fruit 2008 Annual Report 12 reasons mcc is the There are so many advantages to a Mott Community College education—and every student has their own favorites—that we can’t list them all. But throughout this Annual Giving report, you’ll find a sampling of the ways MCC benefits students who make the smart choice… smart 1 choice 2 Y ou don’t have to leave town to get your career moving in the right direction. Make the smart choice. ver 90% of MCC graduates find well paying, satisfying jobs in their O fields of interest. More than 1,600 Michigan companies hire MCC graduates. Co-op and internship opportunities offer hands-on experiences in numerous fields. mcc : the smart 3 choice… 4 CC’s open-door policy and flexible scheduling make going back M to school a smart choice. Our day, evening and weekend classes fit into any schedule. There’s no time like the present to enroll. E ach year over 10,000 students make the smart choice. MCC students find these support services helpful… ■ Career assessment tests & career counseling. ■ Free use of our computer labs and free Internet access. ■MCC was the first community college in Michigan to offer five complete degree programs through Distance Learning. ■ Life-long employment services for MCC grads. For several years, we have used a theme of “Bear More Fruit” for the annual report, including this one, bearing the likeness of MCC’s bronzed mascot guarding the Ballenger Field House. Not only is he a formidable Bruin Bear, but we believe he epitomizes our school spirit — and the community spirit that made his existence even possible. Your financial gifts allowed our Fine Art students and faculty to sculpt the life-size bear standing high on his rear legs as a testament to the quality of the programs at Mott as well as to the continuing support of the Flint community. The Bruin Bear statue grew from an alum’s desire for a visual reminder of MCC’s rich legacy. We believe he enhances and beautifies the campus, and also engenders school spirit amongst students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community at large. The statue is expected to become a rallying point for students and, as a work of art, draw visitors to the campus. The Bruin Bear motif was chosen based upon MCC’s superior athletic program that has been a constant at MCC for more than 60 years. campus life more “bearable” because of you The total budget for producing the Bruin Bear Statue was $35,000. The Ruth Mott Foundation has provided a matching grant to cover half of those costs, which includes all phases of the construction, bronzing and erection of the statue. No faculty or student fees were incurred. Now that’s bearing fruit! 1 mcc Bear More Fruit As I stood watching our MCC cheerleaders generate even more excitement at the unveiling of the bronze Bruin Bear statue last month, I couldn’t help but think that this looming mascot stands as a wonderful reminder of the giving spirit of this community. The creation was no easy feat, taking students several years to complete. The total cost was $35,000, provided by The Ruth Mott Foundation, Judge Thomas & Magdalene Yeotis and The Bruin Club, because they understood the importance of building tradition on our campus. There were times when the end of the Bear project seemed to loom in the far distance without a completion date in sight. There were times when Art Instructor Cathy Smith had to go back to the drawing board to design a stronger structure for the weight of the clay. The design changed again when it was discovered that the original bear hair would never make it through the bronzing process. And still she pressed on, using the setbacks as a real life course in what artists may face at least once in their careers. Ironically, this nation is learning to survive in a historic bear market, described by economists as one of the most challenging economic times of our era. The challenges are real and the impact is certainly being felt in the halls of Mott Community College. We, too, must look at our structure under the weight of this economic condition. Will we be able to withstand the heat of the days ahead as we, along with all other Michigan colleges and universities, deal with our economy? Bear symbolizes spirit of giving to MCC I am convinced we will be able to meet the challenges, especially as I look upon the Bruin Bear now standing in front of the Ballenger Field House. I know that the people of this community have built this college and its programs with their own hard-earned dollars and ingenuity. This Annual Report bears the names of those who have given sacrificially. It is with my deepest appreciation that I thank you for supporting Mott College and its Foundation in such a generous way. In the coming months, our focus will be upon the community aspects of MCC rather than making multiple requests for financial support during these economically challenging times. While finances are tight for everyone, we simply ask that during the 2008 – 09 academic year, you will consider a pledge to the Foundation to be paid in full when our economy recovers from this storm. If you prefer to consider a planned gift to be designated to us in the future, that would be appreciated as well. We are the community’s college and will be here when times are better for our city and county. On behalf of the Foundation for MCC and its board of directors, I thank you in advance for considering a pledge or a legacy gift — and please, stop by and check out the MCC Bruin Bear.
