Dear Friends Robert Kennedy once said, “Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, these ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” If you have never given to MCC — or know someone who has never made a donation to support education in our community — we invite you to make a donation to the Power of 10 campaign by returning the attached envelope with a contribution. This year’s Annual Report represents the phenomenal growth of Mott Community College since its humble beginnings nearly 90 years ago. We have dug into our archives and found academic programs that have stood the test of time as we transitioned from Flint Junior College, to Flint Community College, Genesee Community College to the state of the art programs currently being offered. Reminiscing about the good old days has made us even more proud to be a part of the legacy of Mott Community College as it stands today. The tiny ripple of hope has indeed created a swift current in the lives of so many. I encourage you to look through our Annual Report and imagine the number of lives MCC has EmPowered due to the generosity of many. This Annual Report provides details about the ongoing success of our Power of 10 campaign and how our donors are, therefore, EmPowering the lives of MCC students, faculty, staff and the wonderful community we serve. In the midst of economic trauma, we turned to the individuals and corporations named within and they helped us meet the academic needs of this entire region. Within these pages, you will see how we have been EmPowered for nearly 90 years. Our programs have evolved — thanks to the generosity of thousands of residents who understand the importance of education, by alumni who want to give back to the institution that provided a firm foundation for their own lives and by employees who served this community with their time and knowledge. All have EmPowered MCC to sweep down mighty walls of oppression and resistance to become the world-class institution that it is today. The Foundation for Mott Community College last year launched a campaign to raise $10 from 10,000 alumni and friends of MCC by 2011. We asked those who have never given to consider a $10 gift for the future of MCC. The truth is, considerable resources are necessary to continue offering state of the art education to more than 12.000 students. The donations listed within helped us offset the dwindling financial support at the state and local level. You can also donate online at www.mcc.edu/foundation. Sincerely, Dr. M. Students planning to go on to a four-year college or university can use a two-year arts and sciences program that leads to an associate of arts or associate of science degree that can transfer to a university. If you are looking to move into your career more quickly, MCC offers two-year programs leading to associate’s degrees, as well as Occupational Cerfificates of Achievement and Alternative Training Programs that can be completed in one year or less. These programs are designed to lead directly into the job market. Most of the jobs available today—and those that will be available in the future —require more than a high school education but less than a four-year degree. MCC may also be the answer for students who are not yet ready—either socially or academically— for a four-year college as your community college offers ability assessment, personal attention and academic preparation for college-level work. At right, Robert Calloway and Tamara Diem assess a patient’s status with Sim Man, the most updated technology in academic settings. Below, we see how nursing has changed since the program began at Mott. They are practicing lifting and moving procedures—a 3-man transfer. The ADN program began in 1956 and graduated the first class in 1958. The PN track of the program started at Mott in the 1960s, transferred to Mott (formerly the Flint Practical Nursing Program). Since the beginning, however, Mott has always prepared graduates to assist others in health maintenance and normal health processes as well as assisting with illness, injury or disability. The roles of the Registered Nurse include those of provider of care, manager of care, and member of the discipline of nursing. The registered nurse is involved with care, treatment, counseling and health teaching of clients along the lifespan. He/she also directs and supervises other nursing personnel in the performance of patient care activities. 22 2008 2009 2010 Bronze Statue of Bruin Bear Unveiled in front of Ballenger Field House.
