ENTER Shedding Light The State of Education in Genesee County - MCC’s Role in Defining Our Community 2011-12 Annual Report 1 1 Dick Shaink Lennetta Coney and Joe Black Dear Friends, We believe the 2011-12 Annual Report will shed light on the roles of Mott Community College and education in Genesee County and beyond. While we have celebrated many achievements this year, including being named one of the top 10 community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute, it is clear that many people throughout the country are still in the dark about the necessity of community colleges and the crisis education is facing. Putting our mission in perspective with other educational institutions across the nation has been inspirational. Viewing ourselves in light of our community’s challenges has been remarkable. The mission of Mott Community College is to provide high quality, accessible and affordable educational opportunities and services including university transfer, technical and lifelong learning programs that promote individual development and improve the overall quality of life in a multicultural community. The fact is, community colleges are growing in importance all across the nation as we begin to understand that investments in job training programs are essential to the nation’s prosperity. Clearly, community colleges must play a significant role in preparing workers for emerging jobs. At a recent Hamilton Project Forum in Washington, D.C., Alan Krueger, chair of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, called the “widespread Dick Shaink, President Mott Community College community college network” a huge advantage in the nation’s ability to compete globally. “The structural problems in the job market preceded the economic crisis, partly because of the skills deficit,” Krueger said, and this is why retraining is so important. Combining instruction in trades education with more abstract courses, such as math and writing, is more effective than offering just skills training by itself. Community colleges can do more than train people for existing jobs; they can be “game changers” by helping business and industry create new jobs, said Steven Van Ausdle, Ph.D., president of Walla Walla Community College in Washington. We believe Mott Community College is a game changer, certainly in Genesee County and beyond. We wholeheartedly agree that the information in this Annual Report reflects our efforts to change the game in the lives of thousands of individuals and in the economic life of our region. And it shows that we could not have done it without you. We hope you will help us share with others the message that the state of education defines the state of our community. Lennetta Coney, President Foundation for Mott Community College Joe Black, Chair Foundation for Mott Community College 2 The Biggest Crisis Facing our Community Do we still think of ourselves as one people, with common shared hopes, whose futures are dependent on our mutual successes? Don’t be in the dark Do we owe it to ourselves to do better and pave a clear pathway for all students in the community to become college educated citizens? The state of education defines the state of our community. People in even the best-educated school districts in Michigan are in the dark about the financial challenge education is facing. We are urging you come into the light about the actual cost per student and the budget of MCC. We can no longer afford to stay in the dark about the growing and largely unemployable disenfranchised individuals in our community. There will never again be a vast number of jobs for them on the automobile line. And many don’t know what to do about it. We at Mott Community College believe it is something we should be talking about ALL THE TIME. Too few of us seem very worried, and too many students simply say, “We can’t afford to go to college.” We at MCC believe students can’t afford not to. The State of Education in Genesee County National statistics show that more than half of community college students who were recent high school graduates did not feel properly prepared for college level courses. A weak job market has created a surge in enrollment at Mott and community colleges nationwide. There is a growing need for improved skills and job training in Genesee County and beyond. Statistics prove that poorly prepared college bound students tend to be placed in developmental courses, where many toil and eventually drop out. Half of community college students nationwide are placed in developmental courses when they begin their college studies. Numerous community colleges, foundations, nonprofit organizations, and even state governments have tried to address this issue with varying degrees of success. As caretakers of the future, we must identify the ways students learn, and understand the technological and academic supports they feel they need in order to thrive for long-term success. A smaller and smaller percentage of jobs require only a high school diploma. Unless you are headed for a career in the trades, a college degree is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. It has become painfully obvious we need a far better educated workforce. You can’t get jobs without educated workers. Studies show that students who transfer into a four-year college in their junior year are much more likely to graduate than those who enrolled as freshmen, whose graduation rate is only 50 percent. MCC’s Role in Defining Our Community The unemployment rate for college graduates is only 3.4 to 4.4 percent. Mott Community College’s mission is to seek a vital economic solution. We are Genesee County’s higher education powerhouse. We believe we have the most efficient and effective way to graduate from a four-year academic institution. As the cost of a college education continues to defy gravity, more students throughout the nation are using the community college advantage to make a four-year degree affordable. Tuition and fees at Mott are only $108.05 per contact hour, so spending the first two years at Mott cuts the cost of a four-year college degree by almost half. Community colleges are more agile because we’re smaller and can rapidly respond to changing markets. Class size remains remarkably small, averaging just over 22 students. The truth is, if you’re educated, you’re less likely to be unemployed. It’s that simple. Come into the light with MCC… 3 Click here to listen to Eric Lewis speaking about MCC 4 “M ott Community College is important to the community today because it offers education that equips students and transforms their lives. I am a testimony of it.” Eric began pursuing his dream at Mott Community College of one day working in a shelter. He credits the instructors and programs as helping to cultivate leadership and providing the necessary structure to achieve his dream. Upon graduating with his Associate’s Degree in General Studies, he matriculated to Northwood University where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. He then received a Master’s Degree in Organizational Management from Spring Arbor University. “Through all that education and training, I now work at Carriage Town Ministries as the Director of Men’s Ministries,” Eric said. “I oversee the operations for food, clothing and shelter for the homeless population and I am now an asset to the community. And a lot of it stems from my experiences at Mott Community College.” As an alum, Eric believes Mott has a vital role in redefining the greater Flint community. He likens the college to a human heart pumping life to the body that surrounds it. “Many lives have been blessed and improved by Mott Community College… It constantly gives life to the city of Flint.” Eric noted that Mott continues to grow at a “very healthy rate,” always investing and reinvesting in the campuses to make sure the facilities and programs provide the best possible quality education and experience for its students. Mott College provides a quality education in state of the arts facilities,” he added. “It is the best of both worlds.” Eric Lewis, Alum, Mott Community College Men’s Director, Carriage Town Ministries “Many lives have been blessed and improved by Mott Community College…it constantly gives life to the city of Flint.” Click here to listen to Eric Lewis speaking about MCC 6 W hen it came to choosing a college, Danielle Nettleton said the decision was easy. “Mott is a good starter college,” she said. When the brochures started coming to her home, it was clear that it had the lowest tuition in the Flint area with the same types of academic programs offered at other colleges and universities. “And it was close to home,” she said. Danielle is taking full advantage of everything Mott has to offer with hopes of eventually earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Technology. Her internship with a local radio station is providing the perfect complement to the skills she is learning in the classroom. “Mott has prepared me for my future by teaching me the skills necessary to survive out in the work field.” Danielle underscored her appreciation for the efforts at Mott to keep tuition rates affordable for students. She knows that without the Foundation for Mott Community College helping to raise private monies on behalf of students, education might not be an option for her as she also is raising a young child. Is she pleased with her educational experience at MCC? “I’m very happy. Are you kidding me?” Danielle Nettleton, Media Arts student Student Government Senator, Women in Education Fellow “Mott has prepared me for my future by teaching me the skills necessary to survive out in the work field.” Click here to listen to Eric Lewis speaking about MCC 8 T eresa understands Mott and its mission to educate the community it serves. She is not unlike many other “friends” of the college who not only give of their finances to ensure that the educational offerings stay state-of-the-art, but Teresa also volunteers her personal and professional time whenever she can. “I think the perception of the community that has not attended Mott Community College has changed a lot over the years,” she said. “They now recognize the value of the community college in this area, the ability to retrain individuals for other jobs, as well as provide sound education for young adults right out of high school. I think it has a larger presence in our community now than it has in the past and it provides a quality education.” “I didn’t attend Mott Community College and I think that my perception over the years has changed dramatically. I now see the importance of a community college in this area, the good things it does inside the community as well as what it provides for the community.” “I feel that although I am not a graduate from here, it still deserves my support. There is no better gift than the gift of education. And if I can support this institution by providing that to others, I feel that is a great thing.” Teresa said she believes others will become more supportive when they learn of everything Mott does for the community as well as the students. “I think Mott Community College is a gem right in the middle of our town,” she added. “It is absolutely incredible to me the number of families and people that Mott Community College touches. I have seen grandmas, mothers, daughters all going to school at the same time. Somebody who has lost their job is being retrained. Somebody just graduated from high school and is coming to Mott. And grandma, she just wants to learn more because she didn’t get an education when she was younger. I think Mott Community College is generational. My father went here when it was Flint JC.” “So it has evolved over time and it is a gift that will keep on giving to our community if we continue to support it.“ “People can’t always afford to go away for education now,” Teresa said. “It’s too expensive. And it continues to skyrocket … I think that people view Mott as an integral part of the community and see that it has more value when times are tough in particular.” Teresa McClelland-Sargent, CFP, CDFA Owner, Financial & Tax Planning, Inc. Treasurer, Board of Directors, Foundation for MCC “I am not a graduate of Mott Community College, however, I think it is one of the finest institutions in the area. I admire what they do with young people as well as older individuals in our community. Education is never going away and I think Mott is here for the long haul and is always going to be extremely important to the community. I feel it deserves my utmost support. There is nothing better than the gift of education.” Click here to listen to Eric Lewis speaking about MCC 10 A fter more than 42 years of teaching at Mott, Paul Rozycki understands the academic institution better than most, especially its significance in the greater Genesee County area. “The impact of Mott students in the community is remarkable,” the now retired Political Science instructor said. “If you take a look around Genesee County, the leadership positions on almost every level, you will find a great many successful people who have been Mott students. I have been very, very gratified to see a number of my students go on to elected offices—some state senators, local office holders on city councils, county commissions, things of that nature. Mott students have played a major role in the leadership of Genesee County.” Paul firmly believes Mott’s impact will continue to be significant despite the shrinking state and local tax dollars that have traditionally supported Mott. “I think community colleges will be the driving force for the new economy. We’ve seen a lot of emphasis on that at the national level, and I think that will be true for some years to come. Given its long history, I think Mott College is going to be a leader in that area.” The community will continue to be important in Mott’s success, he noted. “The word community is in our name and it is a two way street.” While Mott has always welcomed the support of the greater Genesee County community through millage and bond issues, even more assistance may be needed in the months and years to come. “Over the last 90 plus years, Mott has really given the population of Genesee County the ability to create new careers, new jobs, and it is probably more important now with the loss of General Motors and so many students of all ages trying to redefine themselves. As Genesee County tries to redefine itself, Mott’s really playing a major role in that process.” Paul Rozycki, MCC Professor Emeritus “If you take a look around Genesee County, the leadership positions on almost every level, you will find a great many successful people who have been Mott students.” Click here to listen to Eric Lewis speaking about MCC 12 T his year, The Foundation for Mott Community College gave an unprecedented gift of $250,000 in unrestricted dollars to help avert a significant tuition increase for the more than 10,000 students currently enrolled at the college, along with its normal, annual allocation to the college. The Foundation was created in 1986 specifically for such instances. Lennetta Coney, President of the Foundation for Mott Community College, described her office as “grant seekers” who seek and give dollars to the college as needed. Lennetta said she is determined to find the financial means to continue to help make the college move forward. “Education is vital now,” Lennetta said. “I know that the future of education is one of those necessary elements that the community must embrace. Once upon a time, it was easy to enter the workplace after graduating from high school. No longer can an individual simply look for a job. They must know the technology that supports that job. They must possess the critical thinking skills necessary to get ahead and secure gainful employment. Education is the pathway to success.” With Mott’s low tuition costs and small class sizes, more and more students are considering the College for an associate’s degree or job training as the first step to achieve their academic goals. “Mott Community College is so vitally important to the community today because it is the community’s college. We have so many young people and, I’ll say, mature people who are looking for a quality education, and want to stay home and work. In some cases, they cannot afford to leave town. Mott offers the best of all worlds.” “We know that nationally community colleges are fulfilling the need for workforce development and economic development,” she added. “We are poised to meet the employers where the need is greatest. Employers tell us what they need and we develop a curriculum to fulfill their manifest or work process. We are uniquely positioned to provide it and make sure that our coursework is relevant to the workforce today.” It’s Lennetta’s belief in Mott’s community-minded mission that helps drive her to ask others for financial support. For her, she would rather ask donors for gifts than to have students no longer afford to take classes at the community college. “Many people are unfamiliar with private gifting,” she said. “But how else do we then make up the deficits created by government cutbacks and dwindling property taxes?” Lennetta invites the community to come to campus and look at Mott’s website, to see all that is being accomplished. “I think when people see what we are doing, they will understand that the community college is a vital asset to the lifeline of this area,” she said. “Donors who give back help us help students while avoiding exporting our talent to other communities. They really understand the vitality and the necessity of a community college.” Lennetta Coney, President of The Foundation for Mott Community College “I think when people see what we are doing, they understand that the community college is a vital asset to the lifeline of this area,” Click here to listen to Eric Lewis speaking about MCC 14 L arry Gawthrop still believes that Mott Community College provides the best value for each tuition dollar that is spent. He and members of the administration are doing everything they can to ensure that the Mott legacy continues throughout the months and years to come. But crunching the numbers to make it happen isn’t always easy. “The future of Mott Community College, I believe, is changing as far as addressing needs,” Larry said. “The needs of the community are changing. We are currently in an economically depressed community. We have very high unemployment. The City of Flint, I think, has been unfortunately leading the nation in unemployment rates in the last two years. There was a lot of retraining we had to do, curriculum redevelopment, certificate programs we had to develop to meet those needs. The future of Mott Community College is going to depend on the local economy and the needs of the local community.” The numbers Larry and his team are constantly crunching come from three different funding sources: state aid, which is an appropriation from the State of Michigan; local property taxes from a voter approved millage; and tuition. Unfortunately, state aid has not kept up. As a matter of fact, Larry reported that it is lower than it actually was in 1999 and 2000, “which is really unfortunate.” In an effort to keep those tuition costs affordable for college students, The Foundation for Mott Community College made a historic general fund contribution of $250,000 to the College. “The property taxes recently have been in a precipitous decline,” he added. “We have lost over $5.5-million dollars in the past two years. So that puts a strain on college finances.” And while his long-term outlook for Mott focuses on managing the state and local cutbacks, he is also growing more troubled about the increased funding needed to offset the influx of developmental students that require remedial education even before they are ready for their college courses. Mott administration strives to provide a balanced approach in its finances through spending cuts and tuition increases. While tuition costs as of January 2012 are $108.05 per contact hour, Larry explained that the cost of delivering that contact hour is $243. “That gift allowed the college to keep tuition lower for all students, which is extremely important especially in these tough economic times,” he said. “The community has been extremely supportive of Mott Community College since its inception and it continues,” Larry said. “We see support not only financially through the Foundation, but also with the millage rate … in our programs and the local efforts we’re doing in outreach. I think we need to have that continued support so that we are able to offer and provide this high quality education at a low cost.” Larry Gawthrop, Chief Financial Officer, Mott Community College Tuition costs today will be $108.05 per contact hour. The cost of delivering that contact hour is $243. In an effort to keep those tuition costs affordable for college students, The Foundation for Mott Community College made a historic general fund contribution of $250,000 to the College. 16 17 The Foundation for Mott Community College is a community-based charitable organization whose major purpose is to acquire and distribute resources to the students, faculty and staff of Mott Community College, as it contributes to educational, literary, multicultural and financial efforts that advance excellence and richness to the community.
