ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
The Foundation for Mott Community College (FMCC) is the fundraising operation which promotes higher
education at MCC. The Foundation’s purpose is to assist students with scholarships, promote special
projects at the college, and enhance the quality of education and opportunity in this community. This
charitable arm of MCC supports 191 scholarships and designated funds and 93 endowment funds.
We are pleased to present the Annual Report for
The Foundation for Mott Community College.
In reflecting on the achievements of this fine
institution, one cannot help but realize that this
great success would not be possible without your
unwavering support and generosity.

The Mission of The Foundation for Mott
Community College
The Foundation is a community based charitable
organization whose major purpose is to acquire and
distribute resources to the students, faculty, and staff
of Mott Community College, as it contributes to
educational, literary, multicultural, and financial
efforts that advance excellence and richness to the
community.
As a staunch supporter of Mott Community College,
you understand the importance of an affordable
education. Your gifts show students they are worthy,
that we value them and that we believe in them.
But most importantly, when you make an investment in students, you’re not merely investing in
their success, you’re making an investment in the
future of our entire community.
As you read the stories contained in this Annual
Report, you’ll be moved by the efforts of our
extraordinary faculty, staff and students and
hopefully inspired to emulate the philanthropy
of the ardent supporters featured here. It’s true:
your gifts really do make a difference. So, go

Dear Friends,
As you peruse through these pages, we hope you’ll be encouraged when you read about
the generosity exemplified by two of the college’s own: a thoughtful FMCC board
member and a legendary coach, and that you will be amazed by the creativity and
innovation MCC’s brilliant faculty and staff members are sharing with our deserving
students.
Unfortunately, our community’s economic woes are far from being over and the needs are
so diverse, so pervasive. Our students need our help now more than ever. Over the years,
MCC staff and faculty have stepped up to the plate with tireless efforts, providing
unwavering support that has helped us generate dollars, so that funding is available for a
variety of projects and initiatives whenever the college needs it. We make every effort to
be thoughtful stewards: being vigilant about providing professional development, minigrants and innovation awards for faculty and staff, and looking for unique ways to
continue keeping tuition low for all students.
We are looking to channel our resources from new and different areas, as well as seeking
to enhance our ongoing efforts to strengthen our existing funding streams, so we can
continue assisting the college in achieving its goals. Your ongoing support helps us help
the College, with initiatives, equipment, mini-grants, scholarships, endowments, special
events, programs and so much more. You should know that you are truly making a
difference in people’s lives when you give.
It is our hope that you will be inspired to continue supporting The Foundation and that
you will keep MCC in mind when considering your giving options this year. Whenever
you bestow a financial gift, you’re not just supporting innovation, progress and student
success: you’re making a lasting imprint on MCC. So, I urge you to make that imprint
today!
DEAR FRIENDS
Sincerely,
“…you will be amazed by the creativity and
innovation MCC’s brilliant faculty and staff members
are sharing with our deserving students.”

As you know, The Foundation for Mott Community College remains a
constant source of support for MCC—contributing to the funding stream
of the College for more than 25 years. As we endeavor toward achieving the
major objective of the Strategic Plan for Mott Community College—
helping students learn and succeed (a worthy and lofty goal for any college)
—please be mindful of the myriad ways you can make your own indelible
imprint on the college, and in the lives of our students.
We cannot fulfill the mission of this great college or complete the great work
we’ve started without the support from our treasured friends and our
wonderful donors. We rely on your continuous support, and we are grateful
for the investment you’ve made toward our students’ future through your
past support. Please consider leaving your imprint on MCC by making a gift.
Thank you, again, for your commitment to Mott Community College, and
Go Bears!
Sincerely,
Beverly Walker-Griffea, Ph.D.,
President, Mott Community College
FROM THE PRESIDENT
As a longtime college administrator and first-time college president, I find myself in a perpetual state
of renewal—and that’s a wonderful thing!
At the beginning of any new semester or academic year, I’m surrounded by new and returning
students who are full of energy, creativity and drive. The college campus is bustling with activity as
they go about their business—attending their classes, participating in campus programs and events,
working on various projects, meeting with professors, or just interacting with their peers. While
their classes, activities and schedules may differ, one thing remains a constant for our students—your
continued support is vital to their success and their future.
I have personally seen many, many students struggle to finance their education. So, please remember
this: whenever you make a financial gift, you are in fact making an indelible imprint. If you ever
wonder what a difference your giving makes, consider this:
• You can be helping a student purchase vital books and supplies for the semester
• You can be helping a student work just one job and not two while maintaining a full course load
• You can be helping a student remain in college and receive a degree
“We stay true to our mission at Mott Community
College by supporting student success. Everything
we do pertains to ensuring that everyone has
access to a high-quality, affordable education. MCC
offers them the guidance, structure and preparation
they need to get on the pathway to success.”

The generosity apparently runs in the family. Klobucher’s brother, Big John Klobucar,
was very generous and widely known for helping the community.
“His brother and I had known each other for years,” said MCC Culinary Arts
Instructor and Chef Matthew Cooper reflecting on John Klobucar. “Actually, Big John
had been making quiet, little donations all along.”
He had fond memories of Big John whenever he frequented his restaurant.
“He always had a cooking shirt on,” he added. “All you had to do was give that guy a
griddle and a soda fountain. He was always a kitchen guy, all the way.”
CULINARY ARTS PROGRAM
Joseph Klobucher, owner of Big John Chicken & Sandwich Factory in Caro and brother of
the late local icon John (Big John) Klobucar, founder of Big John Steak and Onion, recently
donated $100,000 to the college’s culinary arts program in memory of his brother.
That’s great news for students developing their kitchen chops in MCC’s culinary arts
program, learning the culinary ropes with help from a major donation.
Klobucher, also the recipient of MCC’s most prestigious honor, the Distinguished Alumni
Award in 2013, knows the value of a good education. After receiving an Associate’s degree
from Flint Junior College (now MCC), he transferred to Ferris State University and earned a
degree in Business Administration and a teaching certificate. He worked at Caro High
School as the business education and journalism teacher. In 1967, he became the adult
education director in addition to his full-time teaching assignment. Four years later, the
school district created a full-time position as Community School Director and Klobucher
was named to that position. He earned a Master of Arts degree from Central Michigan in
May 1973. He retired from education three years later and joined his brother, John (Big
John) in the restaurant business, and they were business partners until Big John’s death in
May 2011.
“MCC offers an excellent,
hands-on program that
prepares students for career
opportunities in the food
service industry. We’re training
future bakers, chefs, cooks,
food service managers,
restaurant owners, hospitality
professionals and more. We’re
really grateful for this gift.”

“I feel it is very important to give back to what has been a tremendous impact on
my life,” Schmidt said. “Being part of the Mott family has inspired me and I
have really grown professionally during my time here.”
The celebrated coach maintains a stellar track record of player achievement.
Developing and mentoring four National Players of the Year and 18 AllAmericans, he has sent players to major conferences, including the Big Ten, Big
East, SEC, Big 12 and ACC. Most recently, he was selected by USA Basketball as
one of three court coaches for the 2014 U18 USA Men’s National Team training
camp held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in June 2014.
Steve Schmidt is leaving his imprint on MCC, and not just in athletics. He
encourages colleagues and members of the community to join him in providing
financial support to the college.
“I hope more people who have been impacted by Mott will join me in giving
back and help our mission as a college,” he added. “For me, it is all about the
students and any way in which we can continue to develop and educate our
future leaders. Thank you, Mott for everything that you have done for me.”

A well-deserved list of kudos embedded in the “Schmidt file” goes on and on: Mott
Community College’s own Steve Schmidt is used to receiving accolades.

But anyone who knows Coach Schmidt can tell you that he doesn’t just rest on his laurels.
He’s humbled by all the honors he has received—none of which he believes would be
possible without the student-athletes he’s felt privileged to coach and mentor over the years.
For that reason, he remains a tireless, committed student-advocate and ardent supporter of
The Foundation for MCC. He is a proud planned giving donor.
The legendary head men’s basketball coach—who started coaching at MCC in the 1991-92
season—has won nearly everything there is to win at the two-year college level. Schmidt is

During the naming ceremony for the G. Radhabai
and A.V. Rajagopal Student Life Center, Shanti
reflected on his parents dedication to education as
the seed that prompted him to make this wonderful
gift to the college. He recalled the following ancient
Indian folk story:
“There is this old man on the side of a road that
connects two villages, who is trying to plant a sapling.
A young passerby asks the old man what he is doing.
The old man replies that he is planting this shade
tree. “But, says the young man, it’ll be years before it
can provide any shade and you will be long gone by
then.” “It’s not for me,” replies the old man. “I have
already made use of the shade from trees planted by
others—this one is for future travelers.”
“So you see, all my life,” Shanti stated, “I have
rested in the shade of the trees I didn’t plant. I have
been warmed by the fires I did not light and I have
quenched my thirst from the wells I didn’t dig. So in
gratitude, this is my little effort at planting a
sapling.”
