Mary Fix Catholic School—Newsletter Page 3 Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is critical for success. Although we encourage you to keep your child home when he/she is ill to avoid the spread of illness, we encourage you, where possible, to avoid appointments and planning vacations during regular school hours. In addition, we expect students to arrive at school on time. Late students miss opening exercises and important announcements and disrupt their classes when they arrive after the rest of the class is settled in. Students with multiple absences and lates will be monitored and may be referred to an Attendance counselor. Attendance/late arrivals are recorded on the Report Card. Remember to call the Attendance Line if your child is going to be late or absent: (905)270-3140 ext. 1 Fire and Lock Down Drills In accordance with Ministry regula- tions, three fire drills will be held in the Fall and three in the Spring. While we hope that a real fire situation never arises, this practice will help prepare students in the event of a real fire. Schools are also required to conduct Lock Down Drills. These procedures will be reviewed with students during this month. Our Eco Team continues to make Mary Fix a more „eco friendly‟ school with the addition of Wasteless Wednesday lunches and Lights out lunches each day of the week. Weekly waste monitoring is making the Mary Fix community of teachers and students more careful when deciding what gets thrown away and what gets recycled. If you live far from school, park a couple of blocks away and walk the rest of the way! In tandem, technology is developing at a breakneck pace, providing children with many options that keep them indoors and off their feet. The result? Weaker, rounder and increasingly unhealthy children who struggle with body image and emotional distress. All of this is ushering in an alarming era where children, for the first time ever, are expected to live shorter lifespans than their parents. The statistics are frightening, at best. Children with “adult diseases” are doing poorly in school, their self-esteem is suffering, and athleticism is at a decline. However, with the proper education and leadership, these statistics can be changed. Early Movement Academy is attempting to make such a change by motivating children and youth towards movement, active lifestyles, and healthy living. Healthy Lunches, Nutrition and Lifestyle Seminar for Parents Healthy Lifestyle Promotion Seminar for Families In this seminar we aim to inform parents and caregivers about their children’s most important nutritional needs while in school, and how to provide best for that. We offer information regarding navigating nutritional landmines, which includes how to shop in a grocery store, how to catch tricky marketing selling you low quality food with a high quality brand name, how to read nutrition labels, and how to incorporate movement into busy schedules in an easily adoptable way. Through this seminar we aim to inspire children and their families towards movement and healthy eating by explaining the importance of regular physical activity, selecting appropriate foods to nourish various body systems, and engaging them in a serious conversation about how to implement real and lasting changes. We do not aim to preach, but share our own stories, coupled with easily understood breakdowns of research-basedinformation and statistics. Children are welcome to attend this seminar!
