DUFFERIN-PEEL C.D.S.B.
We have had a great start to our school year. We would like to welcome Mr. Figliola, our new
grade one teacher and Mrs. Lecky, our new Planning Time teacher. School routines have now
been established and we are well on our way into this new school year.
The month of September was full of activity and excitement. We would like to thank the whole
community for coming out on our BBQ night and Open House. It was a wonderful evening full of
energy. Thank you to our Catholic School Council and Staff BBQ committee for all their hard
work with organizing the event. Thank you to our Gr. 7 students who assisted in the set up.
Thank you to our Catholic School Trustee, Esther O’Toole, for joining us for our Community BBQ
and who continually blesses us with her presence at our school functions. It is events like this
that demonstrate the wonderful community we have here at St. Faustina.
We would also like to thank Fr. Mark for celebrating our Opening School Mass, led by school
staff, on September 22nd and to all community members who celebrated with us.
Students and staff joined in the Terry Fox Walk/Run. This is always a whole school community
event. It was a wonderful day and all funds raised are going toward a wonderful cause that Terry
started during his life time and we continue today. Cancer has touched the lives of many and this
is our way of helping to make a difference. Thank You!
Thank you to all the families that contributed to the Donation Fundraiser. Your contributions will
support enhancements to the core curriculum at St. Faustina.
Wishing you a very blessed Thanksgiving.
Yours in Catholic Education,
A. Milanetti & E. Oliveira

CATHOLIC EDUCATION
A history of success...
Ontario’s Catholic Schools go back as far as the 1600’s. A formal system was established in 1851, and the Scott Act of 1863 gave the Catholic community the right to
establish and operate publicly funded Catholic schools. Since then, Catholic schools
have made a tremendous contribution to the vitality and success of Ontario’s education system, which ranks among the best in the world.
Today, Ontario’s Catholic education system consistently produces high levels of student achievement. Further, graduates are taught the virtues and values of the Catholic faith — including community, responsibility, accountability, collaboration, caring
and family—making them not just good students, but good citizens.

SAFETY AND SECURITY IN THE SCHOOL
The safety and security of all children in our care is one of our prime concerns. In order to ensure safety and security all schools in
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board have an entry buzzer system. We are asking all visitors to the school, including parents,
to come to the office through the front door, ring the buzzer and wait for a response. Please be patient while waiting for a response and be ready to state your name and reason for entry. No parents should be accessing the school through any other doors.
This will allow us to welcome you and to ask you to sign in at the office and to wear a tag as a visitor or volunteer while in the building. In addition to ensuring the security of the children in the school, this will allow the staff to get to know parents more quickly. We
ask for your cooperation in making this system work.
LUNCH HOUR ROUTINES
If you plan to drop off your child’s lunch, please assist us in efficient distribution by reminding your child to
come to the front foyer at lunch time. A table in the front foyer will be available for the lunch drop-off. Please
use the lunch labels found at the lunch table to label the lunch bag with your child’s name and teacher/grade.
A reminder that students who regularly stay for lunch are NOT permitted to leave school property without a
signed and dated note from parents each time they wish to leave school grounds. Students must sign-out
and sign-in at the office if they are leaving the school. Thank you for supporting this important safety routine.
ST. FAUSTINA IS AN ALLERGEN AWARE SCHOOL
Please be mindful that many students in our school have severe life threatening allergic reactions to peanuts, peanut butter, peanut
oils, legumes, eggs, fish, lentils, butternut squash and other foods and substances – we ask that you are careful when providing
lunches and snacks for your child(ren). As in the past, a written communication is sent home to parents of children notifying them of
the nature of a life-threatening allergy when it is specific to their child’s classroom. Please refrain from sending any birthday or celebratory food items or snacks to school to be shared with a class.
Board policy also dictates that all food taken to school must be consumed indoors (this includes snacks, lunches, etc.). Time will be
provided for children to consume their snacks and lunches within their classrooms. Your continued cooperation in support of our efforts to create a safe and healthy learning environment for all is greatly appreciated.
NO CHILD WITHOUT MEDIC ALERT PROGRAM
The No Child Without program offers a free MedicAlert membership to students who attend our school and are between the ages of 4
to 14. If your child has a medical condition, allergy or is required to take medication on a regular basis, then you should consider a
MedicAlert membership through this program. For further information pick up a brochure at the school office, or visit
www.nochildwithout.ca. If your child is already part of the program but his/her medical condition or contact information has changed,
call 1-866-679-3220.
FIRE DRILLS & LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES
This year we will have six occasions where the students will practice exiting the school building at the sound of the fire alarm.
We would like all households to check that their smoke alarms are working. Also, this is a reminder to each of us to plan and practice
our home fire escape plan so that everyone knows what to do safely in the event of a fire in their home.
Throughout the school year, staff review safety procedures with students on a variety of topics. Emergency evacuation drills are conducted to ensure that in the event of a real emergency evacuation situation, everyone is aware of the procedures to follow in order to
exit the building safely. Over the following months, our students will be shown procedures that will be implemented in the event of an
emergency lockdown & hold and secure situation. It is always helpful if you discuss and review these safety procedures with your
children at home.

KISS ‘N’ RIDE PROGRAM
Please follow these guidelines when using the Kiss and Ride program at St.Faustina:
The Dos:

Children are to be dropped off or picked up, using the drop off lane between the hours of 8:45 and 9:00 am and 3:30-3:45 pm.

Full day Kindergarten children will be able to be picked up, using the drop off lane at 3:15 pm to alleviate volume andtraffic flow at the end of the day. If your child is not picked before 3:30 pm, you will be asked to park your car.

As cars enter the school driveway, please turn right and proceed in a slow and cautious manner, around the perimeter of our
parking lot. The drop off and pick up lane is directly in front of the kindergarten yard. Students are no longer dropped off
or picked up in front of the school. This lane is reserved for buses only.

Children are to exit the car in a safe and careful manner, with their backpacks ready to avoid a long wait time in the drop off lanethe children will be assisted by a teacher if assistance is required. Children are to exit the vehicle on the right side of the car,
onto the landing, for safety purposes.

Cars are to exit the driveway in a slow and cautious manner and are encouraged turn right in order to ease the flow of
traffic.
The Don’ts:

Cars are not to enter the Kiss and Ride drop-off lane with any speed-they must proceed in a very slow and cautious manner

Cars are not to stop at the entrance of the driveway and let children out-this is a very dangerous and unsafe practice
Please do not attempt to move into the drop-off lane from the drive thru lane, unless directed by a teacher.

Under no circumstances are cars to access the bus lane or park in the bus lane; if you need to enter the school, please use the
parking lot
‘n’
CROSSING GUARD AND STREET SAFETY REMINDERS
Please be mindful of the following rules when crossing and parking on the street:
1. Please obey the traffic rules
2. Park where you are supposed to park your car, do not park it illegally.
3. Cross where you are supposed to cross the street, following Sam’s (our crossing guard) directions.
These basic rules will help ensure the safety of our students and all in the community.
STOPR (Student Transportation of Peel Region)
STOPR is providing bus transportation services for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. The STOPR website address
is www.stopr.ca. This website provides access to up to date information regarding delayed buses and bus cancellations due t
inclement weather. To check for eligibility for transportation, please access the following website: businfo.stopr.ca.
Courtesy Seat Request:
STOPR has established a procedure for granting courtesy seats on existing bus runs. Courtesy transportation is assigned on an annual basis
and requests must be submitted by the parent/guardian each year (the form is available from the web-site or from the office). A courtesy seat
may be granted if a seat is available on the bus AND if the bus stop already exists in the current school year. The school principal will assign
students to courtesy seats taking into consideration all eligibility factors.
Families will be notified if seats have been granted.

BRINGING YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL—D.P.W.Z.
Designated Parent
Waiting Zone
It is wonderful that so many parents and guardians accompany their children to school. The Designated Parent Waiting Zone
(D.P.W.Z.) is located in the gravel area just south of the portables and on the path south of the soccer field. We ask that parents and
guardians drop off their children in the school yard area. If parents and guardians would like to wait until the bell rings, please wait in
the D.P.W.Z. Your help and support in keeping the children safe is appreciated.
SCHOOL LATE POLICY
It is very important that students arrive to school on time and ready to work, as late arrivals disrupt instructional activities and classroom routines. We respectfully request that whether students walk or are driven to school, that they are at school before the bell rings
at 9 am. Once the bell has rung, students who come in through the front doors must get a late slip form the front office. To assist with
monitoring student’s tardiness we will be monitoring the number of times they arrive late. Students should not arrive before 8:45
a.m. since there is no Yard Supervision until that time. We thank you for your continued support.
REPORTING STUDENT ABSENCES
Daily attendance and punctuality are very important. Thank you to all parents who have been calling the school when your child has
been absent due to an illness or an appointment. Please continue to report a student absence, to the school at 905-821-2607 and
press 1 for attendance. If you are leaving a message, please Speak Clearly, indicate the Date, SPELL your child’s name and
indicate your child’s teacher, grade and reason for absence.
PLASP
PLASP Child Care Services operates Before and After School Programs at this school. The Before School Program operates from
7:30 a.m. until school start. A nutritious breakfast is served daily. The After School Program runs from the end of the school day
until 6:00 p.m. Children participate in recreational activities, are served a nutritious snack daily and have time for homework. Fee
assistance is available. To register your child, visit the PLASP Program Director, Before or After School. For further information, call

Pupil Accommodation Review Public Consultation
The Ministry of Education released the new Pupil Accommodation Review Guideline (PARG) in March 2015. This guideline sets
expectations for all school boards on managing and reviewing underutilized school space, including potential school closures, and
for the greater coordination and sharing of planning related information between school boards and other community partners.
The guideline requires all school boards in the province to develop or revise Pupil Accommodation Review Policies and to invite
public input into the policy before it is finalized.
A survey to collect feedback on the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board’s draft amended Policy 6.51 Pupil Accommodation
Review will be available for review and comment on the Board’s website at www.dpcdsb.org until 4:30 pm on Friday, October 16,

ECOSCHOOL REPORT
This is St.Faustina’s 5th year in the Ecoschool program. We have achieved 4 Gold Certification awards in the past 4 years in a row,
and are on our way to another gold! The Ecoschool program looks at four areas: energy conservation, waste minimization, ecological literacy, and school ground greening. This is a school-wide program, and together with the school community, we need to work all
year to help reduce our environmental impact. Listed below are a few initiatives we are implementing this year.
Monday and Friday: Car-Free/Walk to School
All students are encouraged to walk, ride a bike, or skateboard to school. During the winter months, why not buddle up
and walk to school; get some exercise, fresh air and interact with your neighbours! The grade 5 students (in their
bright green t-shirts) will monitor this program by punching the walking card given to all students. A completed walking
card will be rewarded with a shoe with the student’s name on our WALK OF FAME bulletin board by the gym.
Junior or intermediate students can grab a “picker” and bin during morning recess and help pick up litter in the
schoolyard. St. Faustina’s schoolyard will be litter-free!
Tuesday and Thursday: Litterless Lunch
All students are encouraged to pack a lunch with 3 or more reusable containers, including a water bottle (litterless!!). All hallway
drinking fountains have water-bottle filler attachments, so students can refill their water bottle easily! Please remind your child that
if they don’t finish their lunch, they can re-pack it in their reusable container and take it home to eat it later---avoid uneaten
lunches in the garbage and be mindful of those who less fortunate.
Wednesday: Recycling Day
On Wednesday afternoons, eco-reps check, record, and empty classroom recycling bins along with exciting music played over the
PA system!
Thursday: Litterless Lunch
HALLOWEEN
Students may choose to wear costumes to school on October
30th. There are some requirements that must be followed by all:
SAFETY is the first consideration. Students must be able to participate in all regular school activities, including recess while in
their costume.
 Costumes can be worn to school. Students will not have an
opportunity to change at school.

No masks are to be worn.

No props should be brought to school.

Costume theme must be non violent and non threatening.

The school cannot assume any responsibility for wear and
tear on costumes.
This year we will also be collecting Halloween candy for Dr. Simone. Please encourage your child to sort the candy and donate
some to this wonderful cause.

Eye See...Eye Learn
Eye See…Eye Learn® provides comprehensive eye exams by local Doctors of Optometry to junior kindergarten students in participating school
regions. The eye exams are covered under provincial health insurance (or OHIP) when you show your child’s health card. This means that there is
no out-of-pocket cost for the eye exam.
If the child requires a pair of glasses, they will receive a free pair donated by Nikon Lenswear, OGI and your participating Doctor of Optometry. The
value of the glasses is estimated over $250.
The Eye See...Eye Learn® program was developed to raise awareness among parents of the importance of having their children's eyes checked
when starting school. Each year, thousands of children start school without ever having an eye exam.
Children who cannot see the board, focus on a picture or follow words in a book may struggle to achieve their full learning potential. Vision problems can also impact their hand-eye coordination for physical activities and even impact their social development. In fact, 80 per cent of learning
comes directly through vision.
The Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO) recognizes the important link between eye health and learning, and
recommends comprehensive eye examinations for all children entering kindergarten. The Eye See...Eye Learn® program will help make sure our kindergarten students get the best start to learning.

technology for learning. Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic
devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational
purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission. Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used

of personal data plans.
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must
comply with the Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text
messages, etc.) will continue to be directed through the main office. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a loss
of PED privileges and/or any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration.
The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during school-sanctioned activities for a
specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas.
Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost,

PEDICULOSIS (Head Lice)
Often, at this time of year, schools experience an infestation of head lice (pediculosis).
In order to control these pests, we shall follow the procedures outlined below. We request your full cooperation. If cases are found in the school, we shall inform all parents.
We shall check friends and classmates of the effected students and, if necessary, seek
help from the Region Health Department. However, we would ask that you check your
own children and, if you find them to be infested, please let us know. This information
can also be obtained from a pharmacist or the Regional Health Department.
If your child does become infested by head lice, we will ask you to keep them out of
school until after they have been treated with the correct shampoo and their hair is
entirely clear of both lice and nits (eggs.) If we all cooperate in these procedures, we
may not entirely escape outbreaks but we will be able to bring them under control
quickly.
