School Motto:
To Trust, To Risk,
To Love, To Serve
Congratulations on another
great year at d’Youville!!!
A special congratulations goes out to all of
our graduates. We know you will make a
positive contribution to our world. Good
luck as you all move on to the next stage in
your lives. Our hope is that all of you
continue to be good and caring citizens of the
world, loving God and neighbour.
Our community has had many
accomplishments again this
year. Teachers and students have
done great things in classrooms, in
ROPSSAA sports, in our Arts
programs and all of our clubs and
activities. Green-force has lived up
to their pledge and has achieved
Ontario Eco-school GOLD
Certification for the third year in a
row. We are reducing our carbon
footprint and educating our
community
in
living
sustainably. Over this school year
we have contributed generously to
three very successful outreach
campaigns. Together we raised
$15, 000 for Share Life at our
annual Walkathon, raised $7,000
for Women’s Cancer Research and
another $6,000 for “Jessica’s”
fundraiser.

Chaplain’s Message
Thanks to d’Y staff and students for an amazing school year. Our school continues its
strong traditions and just keeps getting stronger.
One example is the trip to Ottawa to join the March for Life. We filled a bus with fifty
students this year. We made our presence felt at the March for Life. After the march we
went to Montreal to visit the place where St. Marguerite d’Youville served the poor in the
18th century. I believe that she would be smiling on these students who continue her legacy of trying to create a just society, one where our most vulnerable are protected.
We had just celebrated mass for Catholic Education Week the day before leaving on this
trip. On the bus ride home we decided it was a good time to start preparing the upcoming end of the year liturgy. We talked about making the liturgy one of thanksgiving for a
great year, and someone suggested we invite students and staff to tweet what it is they are
thankful for. Ms. Raposo went on d’YTV on the next school day and invited all to say
what they are thankful for at #thankstody. Apparently many are very thankful - we were
even trending in Canada!
The end of the year liturgy was a great success. The tweets were shared as many stood up
and shouted what they were thankful for. One unique thing about this liturgy was that it
was completely student led. They called the congregation to order, led the songs, readings, the petitions, and gave the witness talks. Completely student led - I have never seen
that in my thirty-one years as a teacher. Extraordinary!
We really do have much to be thankful for. Thanks so much to all the staff and students
who make St. Marguerite d’Youville a great place to be. May God bless all with a wonderful summer, and I pray especially for all staff and students who will not be with us next
year. Next year d’Youville will celebrate our twentieth anniversary - maybe we will see
you at the celebration.

What do drums, incense, and a Torah
scroll from World War 2 have in common?
They were just some of the sights and
sounds experienced by Mrs. Bryant, Mrs.
Moriarty and 44 grade 11 World Religion
students on April 23. We were thrilled to
tour the Fo Guang Shang (Buddha’s Light)
Buddhist Temple and Solel Synagogue in
Mississauga. These religious and cultural
centres opened their doors to open our
minds. As a Catholic school that embraces
all faiths, we were privileged to hear the
first-hand experiences and witness the
practices of these religious and cultural leaders.
The Catholic faith
teaches that all paths lead to God
and we were blessed to walk the
beautiful paths of these 2 places of
worship.
Namaste & Shalom.
As our semester comes to an end,
we want to thank all the teachers in
the Theology department for their
strong commitment and dedication
to our students through the Religious Education curriculum and involvement in extra-curricular activities. We extend best wishes to the
following teachers in their continued vocation of teaching: Ms. Del
Duca, Mr. Denyszyn, Ms. Dolson,
Ms. Fresco, Ms. Kitunen, Mr.
McMullan and Ms. Raposo.
We wish everyone a restful and joyful summer filled with God‘s love.

Academic Resource
Going with the Flow!
One thing our department is not afraid
of is change! Each person and learner is different
and we respond accordingly. We welcome new
experiences and always try new things or
strategies to help our students. We busily plan for
students as they start high school or help them
gain independence as they leave d’Youville on
their post-secondary journey.
In September, we are excited to
welcome some new students in the Planning for
Independence and the ASD Diploma Support
program. They have been touring our
school and visiting classes in order to
get a sneak peek of what high school
will be like. We also welcome Mr.
Snihura to our department as one of
our PIP teachers and Ms. Steinhofer
as a GLE teacher.
Sadly, we will be saying
good bye to Ms. Kazor and Ms.
Bennett as they will be transferred to
other schools in our Board. We also
thank Ms. O’Leary who joined our
team near the end of this semester to
fill in for Ms. Brugaletta. We hope
them all the best in their new roles.
As a result, students may
have a new Special Education
Resource teacher, who will continue
to monitor their progress, provide
academic strategies to teachers and
update their Individual Education
Plan. Learning and using the assistive technology,
Texthelp11, will be a focus next year and training
sessions will be embedded in the Learning Strategies
course to help with tests and the upcoming O.S.S.L.T.
2015.
Just recently, on June 11th and 12th, students
with an Individual Education Plan wrote the Grade 9
Math EQAO in the Resource room 112. Students
received additional time to complete this test, which
also serves as a portion of their course mark. We wish
them a successful outcome!
As we prepare for Semester 2 final examinations,
teachers, ERWs and case managers continue to help
students prepare for their exams. Students were
encouraged to sign up to write their exams in the
Resource room and/or use assistive technology to
support their learning needs. Academic Resource
teachers continue to promote and model selfadvocacy skills, especially in the area of utilizing
technology to empower students and provide them
with skills they can use while on their post-secondary
pathway.
Lastly, we would like to thank all the teachers,
support staff, administrators and parents for
supporting our department in our pursuit to serve
students during this busy time! We wish all our
students and staff a safe and well deserved break this
summer!!

St. Marguerite d’Youville’s SWAC Program (School Within A College) has been busy wrapping up its third successful year at Humber College. Thirty senior students from
our school participated in this unique opportunity to
complete their high school education and a full college
credit in an off campus experience that spanned the year.
At Humber SWAC students are fully immersed in college
life and have access to many of the services and events
that the college offers at no cost. The immersion of our
students in the college setting is truly a major key to their
success. Many students after having attended the program
are able to make a truly informed decision regarding their
future directions.
This year students participated in College Seminar and
Introduction to Sociology as part of Humber’s SWAC offerings. In College Seminar students took an introspective look at themselves in a college atmosphere and were taught many of the study skills and work habits necessary to make it in college. In Sociology students examined what makes society tick. They examined
different facets of class, gender, race, institutions, social status and deviant behavior that make up the world
we live in.
If you’re a student interested in completing your high school career off campus and test driving the college
experience, the SWAC program may be for you. Please see your VP or call Mr. Carreiro at 905-452-4828 for
more information. We are currently accepting applications for the 2014 and 2015 school year.

Leadership
St. Marguerite d’Youville’s very own Leadership class
has had another phenomenal year! The students
demonstrated commitment, initiative and enthusiasm in planning great events for the school community. Memories were defiantly made as a class of 28
students started off as a blank canvas and came together to become a masterpiece of a team.
From the Lacrosse Buy In, Student Teacher Basketball Game, Dodgeball Tournament, to the Athletic
Banquet the leadership class was there for it all. We
kicked off second semester with our multiple stations
on Health and Wellness day, stations Active ‘R’ Wii,
blind fold taste testing, and mellow yoga were successful as our class managed to teach students the
importance of physical and mental health. We continued with tournaments, providing all d'Y students
with the opportunity to prove their skills in doge-
ball, futsal and basketball. As a class we also demonstrated our coordination skills zip lining and performing aerial challenges during our adventurous
field trip Treetop Trekking. Also, the leadership class
trip to Silver Creek Outdoor Center was focused on
communication and problem solving skills while collaborating in preparation for the school community
events.
To our graduating leaders, cherish the memories and
lessons you learned in leadership and put them to
use in the life after you leave the four walls of
d'Youville. To the class of 2014 may your lives be
filled with achievement, happiness and personal success.

success and big hit at d’Y. The tournament consisted of nine teams; BSL, Purple Cobras, Head
Hunters, Merceharies, Hittaz, Gratata, SiniGang, Gym Class Heros and GLOW GANG.
Each team gave it their all in every one of their
games, but four specific teams shined at the
tournament and made it to the semi-finals; BSL,
Gym Class Heros, Hittaz and Purple Cobras. The
semi-finals were very thrilling games with Hittaz
and Purple Cobras advancing to the finals, leaving BSL and Gym Class Heros with a fight for 3rd
place. The 3rd place game was very exciting and
the Gym Class Heros proved to be the better
team with a great victory. The finals were well
anticipated with the two best teams coming
together for a great match; Hittaz and Purple
Cobras. The finals were best two out of three,
with Hittaz and Purple Cobras showing no love
for each other, fighting for 1st place and the
prize. Hittaz showed they were the best team in
the tournament with two big wins against the
Purple Cobras in front of a big crowd in the
finals, taking 1st place and the title of 2014 d’Y
Dodge Champions!

The Jr. Boys Soccer team of 2013-2014, demonstrated hard work and dedication which lead to a very
successful season. Team captain Dequan T. and
Coaches Butkovic, Di Lorenzo and Dietrich were
proud of their team’s performance as they made it
to ROPPSAA semi-finals. The boys smashed and
fought courageously to the top as they pummeled
through the ranks winning their games, with a strong
offensive league playing 6 games and scoring 20
goals, added with a tough defense allowing only 7
goals. As the boys made it to the quarter-finals and
won 7-4 against David Suziki S.S, the boy’s streak
ended with a defeat in
the semi-finals to St.
Marcenllinus 1-0. The
team looked young but
energetic and prepared
for every game as they
provided exciting soccer finishing the season
with 5 wins and only 1
lose. Keep up the good
work and best of luck
next year. Coach Butkovic and Leadership student
Anjali N.

Varsity Girls Soccer
The varsity girl’s soccer team had many new faces as well as familiar faces returning for the 2014 season.
The girls got off to a very good start winning their first two games; 9-4 against Mayfield and 5-0 against
Bramalea. A memorable game was 2-2 against the Triple A Champions St. Mikes Thunder. The undefeated streak was soon over when they hit a wall and lost three straight games. Playing through a torrential
downpour and having a short bench was not an ideal way of playing their final game. That didn’t stop
the team from playing hard and ending the season with a final score of 0-0 against the very strong Humberview Hawks. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to advance to the finals. The coaches hope the junior
players had a good experience and are excited to come back next year. A shout out to the graduating
players: Makalah B., Paige B., Adrianna C., Erica F., Veronica L., and Kristina V.. The coaches would like
to wish them well and hope they continue to play soccer. Great season ladies and good luck next year!

Sr. Boys Soccer Fundraising for Team Jessica
On Thursday May 1st 2014, the Senior Boys’ Soccer Team hosted a tournament to help fundraise for Mr. and Mrs. Falacho’s daughter, Jessica. Two year-old Jessica Falacho has Aicardi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. The d’Y community
raised $6,000 through tickets sales for the soccer buy in and a $2.00 dress down day. The Lacrosse team pitched is as
well hosting a BBQ selling hamburgers, chips and drinks to the fans and teachers. The Leadership class ran a candy shop
to help fundraise for the event as well.
The Senior Boys gave it their all in the two games they played on d’Y turf! They tied Bishop Allen 1-1, and defeated St.
Charles 6-0. Thanks to all the fans who came out to support the Boy’s Senior Soccer team and to help fundraise Jessica’s
cause. If you can’t be an athlete, be an athletic supporter!

Varsity Boys Lacrosse
Your d’Youville Varsity Panther
Lacrosse team fielded their first
graduating team including senior
players who have been key contributors for the four years of the
lacrosse program. The boys were
unsuccessful in their main objective
of making the playoffs but never
failed to come out with a game
ready mind set and have yet to fail
to battle hard every game. The
team was led by the team captains
Connor P., David M., Justin P. and
Ruvon T.
The boys came at opposing
teams at full attack from the whole
team. Goals this season were constantly coming off of assists from
Attack men, Midfielders, Long
Poles and even an assist from the
goalie. Opposing defenses were
constantly on alert from frequent
cannon of a ball by David M.
joined by his partner in their
“dynamic duo” Justin Pereira and
the rest of a very effective motion
offense. The team’s offensive suc-
cession depended a lot on the face
off specialists Ben B. and Spencer
D.
Defensively the team was constant intimidating threat all season
because of heavy hitters Connor P.
and Ruvon T. as well as the aggressive and effective defensive stick
checks by Gregory C. and the
teams very own shut down, brick
wall of a goalie Mathew S.
The boys also played some history
making games as well this year,
including the program’s very first
game against the Brampton firefighters where they won 8-7 in
sudden death over time, and hosting their first ever tournament
where they had a shut out game 50 over St.Paul.
The team would like to thank
both coaches, Coach McAllister
and Coach McMullen for their excellent guidance and support to all
of the players. Special thank you to
the team managers Alison and Rachel. Finally, the team will miss all
the senior players that are moving
on and would like to wish them
the best on their future.

Varsity Girls Softball
The Varsity Girls Softball team completed their regular season with a record of 5-3. The rebuilding
team started off strong at the Dunnville tournament, finishing third in their pool. The Panthers continued to
play against all the best third place teams, but unfortunately lost in the finals. Special mention goes out to
graduating players: Rochelle B., left fielder known for her powerful hits; Jade C., who showed a lot of improvement controlling second base this season; Irene D., the team captain known for being a tough defensive player and the most consistent powerhouse hitter; and Lindsay M., a rookie this season, who started
with no experience and advanced to starting pitcher who consistently got on base. Coaches McPhee, Del
Duca, Kitunen, and Lomboy want to congratulate the girls for a well-played season. Best of luck to the graduating players as they move forward, and the coaches are looking forward to seeing the returning players
improve and work hard next season.

they fell short by one

Returning players were

stepped up to fill the gaps
on the team. The team
played as one, and over

became extremely strong.
