A special congratulations goes out to all of our graduates. We know you will make a positive contribution to our world. Good luck as you all move on to the next stage in your lives. Our hope is that all of you continue to be good and caring citizens of the world, loving God and neighbour. Our community has had many accomplishments again this year. Teachers and students have done great things in classrooms, in ROPSSAA sports, in our Arts programs and all of our clubs and activities. Green-force has lived up to their pledge and has achieved Ontario Eco-school GOLD Certification for the third year in a row. We are reducing our carbon footprint and educating our community in living sustainably. Over this school year we have contributed generously to three very successful outreach campaigns. Together we raised $15, 000 for Share Life at our annual Walkathon, raised $7,000 for Women’s Cancer Research and another $6,000 for “Jessica’s” fundraiser. Greco PAWS & REFLECT Vol. 14 Issue 3 Page 3 Chaplain’s Message Thanks to d’Y staff and students for an amazing school year. Our school continues its strong traditions and just keeps getting stronger. One example is the trip to Ottawa to join the March for Life. We filled a bus with fifty students this year. We made our presence felt at the March for Life. After the march we went to Montreal to visit the place where St. Marguerite d’Youville served the poor in the 18th century. I believe that she would be smiling on these students who continue her legacy of trying to create a just society, one where our most vulnerable are protected. We had just celebrated mass for Catholic Education Week the day before leaving on this trip. On the bus ride home we decided it was a good time to start preparing the upcoming end of the year liturgy. We talked about making the liturgy one of thanksgiving for a great year, and someone suggested we invite students and staff to tweet what it is they are thankful for. Ms. Raposo went on d’YTV on the next school day and invited all to say what they are thankful for at #thankstody. Apparently many are very thankful - we were even trending in Canada! The end of the year liturgy was a great success. The tweets were shared as many stood up and shouted what they were thankful for. One unique thing about this liturgy was that it was completely student led. They called the congregation to order, led the songs, readings, the petitions, and gave the witness talks. Completely student led - I have never seen that in my thirty-one years as a teacher. Extraordinary! We really do have much to be thankful for. Thanks so much to all the staff and students who make St. Marguerite d’Youville a great place to be. May God bless all with a wonderful summer, and I pray especially for all staff and students who will not be with us next year. Next year d’Youville will celebrate our twentieth anniversary - maybe we will see you at the celebration. Page 4 What do drums, incense, and a Torah scroll from World War 2 have in common? They were just some of the sights and sounds experienced by Mrs. Bryant, Mrs. Moriarty and 44 grade 11 World Religion students on April 23. We were thrilled to tour the Fo Guang Shang (Buddha’s Light) Buddhist Temple and Solel Synagogue in Mississauga. These religious and cultural centres opened their doors to open our minds. As a Catholic school that embraces all faiths, we were privileged to hear the first-hand experiences and witness the practices of these religious and cultural leaders. The Catholic faith teaches that all paths lead to God and we were blessed to walk the beautiful paths of these 2 places of worship. Namaste & Shalom. As our semester comes to an end, we want to thank all the teachers in the Theology department for their strong commitment and dedication to our students through the Religious Education curriculum and involvement in extra-curricular activities. Each person and learner is different and we respond accordingly. We welcome new experiences and always try new things or strategies to help our students. We busily plan for students as they start high school or help them gain independence as they leave d’Youville on their post-secondary journey. In September, we are excited to welcome some new students in the Planning for Independence and the ASD Diploma Support program. They have been touring our school and visiting classes in order to get a sneak peek of what high school will be like. We also welcome Mr. Snihura to our department as one of our PIP teachers and Ms. Steinhofer as a GLE teacher. Sadly, we will be saying good bye to Ms. Kazor and Ms. Bennett as they will be transferred to other schools in our Board. We also thank Ms. O’Leary who joined our team near the end of this semester to fill in for Ms. Brugaletta. We hope them all the best in their new roles. As a result, students may have a new Special Education Resource teacher, who will continue to monitor their progress, provide academic strategies to teachers and update their Individual Education Plan. Learning and using the assistive technology, Texthelp11, will be a focus next year and training sessions will be embedded in the Learning Strategies course to help with tests and the upcoming O.S.S.L.T. 2015. Just recently, on June 11th and 12th, students with an Individual Education Plan wrote the Grade 9 Math EQAO in the Resource room 112. Students received additional time to complete this test, which also serves as a portion of their course mark. We wish them a successful outcome! As we prepare for Semester 2 final examinations, teachers, ERWs and case managers continue to help students prepare for their exams. Students were encouraged to sign up to write their exams in the Resource room and/or use assistive technology to support their learning needs. Academic Resource teachers continue to promote and model selfadvocacy skills, especially in the area of utilizing technology to empower students and provide them with skills they can use while on their post-secondary pathway. Thirty senior students from our school participated in this unique opportunity to complete their high school education and a full college credit in an off campus experience that spanned the year. At Humber SWAC students are fully immersed in college life and have access to many of the services and events that the college offers at no cost. The immersion of our students in the college setting is truly a major key to their success. Many students after having attended the program are able to make a truly informed decision regarding their future directions. This year students participated in College Seminar and Introduction to Sociology as part of Humber’s SWAC offerings. In College Seminar students took an introspective look at themselves in a college atmosphere and were taught many of the study skills and work habits necessary to make it in college. In Sociology students examined what makes society tick. They examined different facets of class, gender, race, institutions, social status and deviant behavior that make up the world we live in. If you’re a student interested in completing your high school career off campus and test driving the college experience, the SWAC program may be for you. The Senior Boys gave it their all in the two games they played on d’Y turf! They tied Bishop Allen 1-1, and defeated St. Charles 6-0. Thanks to all the fans who came out to support the Boy’s Senior Soccer team and to help fundraise Jessica’s cause. If you can’t be an athlete, be an athletic supporter! The boys were unsuccessful in their main objective of making the playoffs but never failed to come out with a game ready mind set and have yet to fail to battle hard every game. The team was led by the team captains Connor P., David M., Justin P. and Ruvon T. The boys came at opposing teams at full attack from the whole team. Goals this season were constantly coming off of assists from Attack men, Midfielders, Long Poles and even an assist from the goalie. Opposing defenses were constantly on alert from frequent cannon of a ball by David M. joined by his partner in their “dynamic duo” Justin Pereira and the rest of a very effective motion offense. The team’s offensive suc- cession depended a lot on the face off specialists Ben B. and Spencer D. Defensively the team was constant intimidating threat all season because of heavy hitters Connor P. and Ruvon T. as well as the aggressive and effective defensive stick checks by Gregory C. and the teams very own shut down, brick wall of a goalie Mathew S. The boys also played some history making games as well this year, including the program’s very first game against the Brampton firefighters where they won 8-7 in sudden death over time, and hosting their first ever tournament where they had a shut out game 50 over St.Paul. The team would like to thank both coaches, Coach McAllister and Coach McMullen for their excellent guidance and support to all of the players. Special thank you to the team managers Alison and Rachel. Finally, the team will miss all the senior players that are moving on and would like to wish them the best on their future. Leadership student Ruvon T., Coach McAllister, and Coach McMullen Page 24 PAWS & REFLECT Vol. 14 Issue 3 Page 25 Varsity Girls Softball The Varsity Girls Softball team completed their regular season with a record of 5-3. The rebuilding team started off strong at the Dunnville tournament, finishing third in their pool. The Panthers continued to play against all the best third place teams, but unfortunately lost in the finals. Special mention goes out to graduating players: Rochelle B., left fielder known for her powerful hits; Jade C., who showed a lot of improvement controlling second base this season; Irene D., the team captain known for being a tough defensive player and the most consistent powerhouse hitter; and Lindsay M., a rookie this season, who started with no experience and advanced to starting pitcher who consistently got on base. Coaches McPhee, Del Duca, Kitunen, and Lomboy want to congratulate the girls for a well-played season. Best of luck to the graduating players as they move forward, and the coaches are looking forward to seeing the returning players improve and work hard next season. Over all, the Varsity Girls Rugby team persevered, endured, and pushed to the end, we would like to thank and say goodbye to our graduating seniors Mimi H., Shekinah B., Monique P., Daniella G., and Diamond A. Great work ladies, and we hope to see you all next year back at it!! This years Varsity Girls Rugby team coached by Mr. Zeni and Mrs. McMullin (McSpeens), played a hard season as they fell short by one game that they lost 14-15 to St. Thomas Aquinas. Returning players were few, and the juniors really stepped up to fill the gaps on the team. The team played as one, and over the duration of the season became extremely strong. Captains of the team Mr. Zeni, Mrs. McMullin Lashawna H. and Mimi and Leadership student H. worked exceptionally Shekinah B.
