Principal’s Message
Welcome to the February edition of Paws and Reflect! We have had another great
semester full of wonderful events and opportunities here at d’Youville. You will see
many of these as you read the contents of this newsletter.
Our Black History Month Committee has been very busy preparing for the weeks
ahead. Among the many daily activities planned, d’Youville will host a special theatrical
presentation called Railway to Freedomand engage with guest speakers Maestro Fresh
Wes and Football Legend, Chuck Ealey. We are very proud to also announce that on
February 27th we will be taking the entire student population and staff to see the movie
Selma at Trinity Common. We believe this will be an outstanding learning opportunity
for all of our students and a sign of solidarity to the larger community that we all share
the same belief that all humans have the God given right to equity, freedom and dignity.
Our Chaplaincy Team led by Mr. Whelan, will continue with our theme of “Exploring Paths of Joy” as our focus for our
Pastoral Plan. Staff and students have participated in many faith based activities centred on this theme and over 800
students have already participated in a full-day Retreat. We have many more events planned for semester two.
Once again this year in second semester all of our Catholic schools will be implementing the Catholic Community Culture
and Caring School Climate Survey. A randomly generated list of approximately 400 students will be surveyed. The
results of this survey will help the school identify areas for growth under the topics of student safety and wellbeing,
Bullying Prevention and inclusivity. The survey implementation period is February 17 through March 6.
The d’Youville community would like to welcome back Mrs. Deslauriers, Mrs. Tsafkopoulos and Mrs. D’Souza who will
be returning to our teaching staff this February.
Congratulations to all students and staff on a fantastic first semester and good luck and best wishes in semester two.
Mr. K. Greco
Chaplains Message
What is the purpose of Catholic Education? Archbishop J. Michael Miller wrote that “The specific
purpose of a Catholic education is the formation of young people who will be good citizens of this
world, loving God and neighbor and enriching society with the leaven of the gospel, and who will
also be citizens of the world to come, thus fulfilling their destiny to become saints.” Do you believe we are all called to be good citizens and saints? I do. Let’s set our expectations high.
There is a new banner in our school near the front entrance. It has some images relating to the
Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations. These are a list of what we hope for our graduates of the
Catholic school system. We hope that the Catholic Graduate will be the following: a discerning
believer, an effective communicator, a reflective and creative thinker, a collaborative contributor, a
caring family member, a responsible citizen and a self-directed and responsible life-long learner.
On the school’s web page (www.dpcdsb.org/DYOUV) under “Our Faith” there will soon be a
questionnaire you can use to evaluate how you rate yourself on each of the fifty-two Catholic
Graduate Expectations.
All of the activities we do here at St. Marguerite d’Youville aim to achieve these goals, from academics to sports, as well as liturgies, retreats and all of our extra-curricular activities. Our hope is
expressed by the words of Jesus: “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love; just
as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to
you so that my JOY may be in you, and that your JOY maybe made full.” (John 15:10-11)

Accelerated Reader Program and Contest a Huge
Success!
This semester as part of the grade 9 and 10 English
curriculum and to assist with Literacy Test Preparation, the
junior level English classes were challenged to read novels
of their choice to earn points as a part of the Accelerated
Reader Program. Referred to as A.R. by staff and students,
this reading program is facilitated by the Teacher-Librarian,
Ms. Andreacola and Library Technician, Mrs. Caroleo who
give the students a tutorial on how the program works,
administer the STAR Reader quiz to gauge reading levels
and explore the benefits of improving reading skills.
This year, the English Department held a contest to
encourage our students to earn their 10 or 15 A.R. points.
We are proud to say that our junior level semester one
English classes earned a grand total of 7096.8 Accelerated
Reader points, which is A LOT of reading. The Top Grade
9 readers are Chiamaka Anyaso with 101.9 points and
Michelle Bouchard with 226.4 points. The Top Grade 10
readers are Emily Da Silva with 122.7 points and Kean
Pueda with 269.9 points. The top grade 9 classes are: Ms.
Martins’ period 4 class, Ms. Kosuta’s period 1 class, and Mr.
Middlemiss’ period 4 class. The top grade 10 classes are Mr.
Dietrich’s Period 1 class and Ms. Martins’ Period 1 Class. All
students who earned their 10 or 15 points received a
certificate from their teacher and a breakfast voucher from
the Principal, Mr. Greco.

A.C.C.E.S.S.
This semester has been an eventful one! Our A.C.C.E.S.S. students have been working hard towards meeting
all of their personal and academic goals. In addition to “cooking” things up with Ms. Monticciolo and her
hospitality class, our students lived out gospel values and fed their souls by handing out lunches to the
homeless in downtown Toronto. Students prepared a hearty meal, toiletries and socks. In our Expressing
Aboriginal culture art course, students put their sewing skills to use by creating their own moccasins.
A.C.C.E.S.S. travelled to a Brampton job fair and learned valuable resume and job application skills.
Academically, our students enrolled in the science program, furthered their knowledge of the human systems
by performing a dissection on our frog “Lily”. We accomplished a lot this semester and wish our students who
have successfully completed the program all the best in their future endeavors. As we prepare for semester
two, we look forward to welcoming our new students!

This year grade 9 students participated in the Canadian Geography Challenge.
The challenge is Canada’s largest student geography competition. It has reached
almost 500 schools, with more than 2 million students acoss Canada participating.
This is d’Youville’s 4th annual run at the competition, with close to 200 students
participating.
The challenge begins at the classroom level where students answer a series of
questions that push the limits of their geographic skills. On Wednesday January
7th, the top ten students progressed to compete at the school level challenge. The
finalists were filled with excitement as their fellow classmates watched and
cheered them on throughout the competition. Zachary Singh has been awarded
St. Marguerite d’Youville’s School Champion. Zachary will go on to compete at
the provincial/territorial level. We wish him the best of luck!
The Geography Challenge Committee would like to thank all of the students for their hard work, excellent
effort and participation in the competition. We look forward to continue this tradition next year at
d’Youville.

In the world of Science…
In the body systems biology unit, our grade 10 students got the opportunity to
look at little bit closer at the frog during the class dissection. They were able to
observe the different organs in the circulatory, digestive, and respiratory
systems and how they all interconnect to function as a whole.
Grade 12 Biology students created toys in the hopes of selling to “Mastermind Toys Company” that depicts a
type of genetic technology. Check out the sheep and its clone baby as well as the manipulating bacteria
interactive puzzle shown in the images.
In grade 9 science, students got the chance to dissect a barn owl pellet that contained regurgitated bones.
They were then able to identify the species that the owl ate at its last feeding to create a food web of the
ecosystem.
All grade 11 senior science classes hosted a career session for all grade 10 science students. Each grade 11
student prepared a presentation about a career in the science field and the grade 10s had the opportunity to
learn about all of the options available to them in their future. It was a great success and the grade 10s were
inspired by the motivation and interests of their peers.
Our d’Youville Science Exploravision team has been busy working on developing a new design for a new and
improved spacesuit! It’s powered by quantum dot photovoltaics imbedded in self-annealing polymers. The
team consists of Angel Ly, Janhavi Patel, and Justina Szczypinski. The submissions are due at the end of
January, and we wish the team great success and luck!

Multicultural Marketplace 2014
On Wednesday, November 26th 2014, St. Marguerite d'Youville S.S. in Brampton transformed their cafeteria and
matrix into a cultural extravaganza. They hosted their biennial Multicultural Marketplace Night, showcasing 21
countries spanning over 4 continents. The evening began with an Olympic style flag procession, followed by a
culturally inspired fashion show and dance performance. For the remainder of the event students, families,
staff and community members explored the 'marketplace', where they sampled regional specific cuisine, viewed
and experienced cultural artifacts and interacted with over 150 cultural ambassadors. It was the largest cultural
event at d'Youville this year, with over 500 people in attendance. Over $1600 was earned from ticket sales that
evening and will be donated to ShareLife. Preparations are underway for 2016, when we will bring the
'Marketplace' back. An amazing time was had by all.

Academic Resource Department
The Academic Resource Department welcomed many new Grade nines this year. Our
grade 9 Learning Strategies (GLE 101) courses supported students transition into
high school by helping them with time management skills, introducing new forms of
assistive technology, exploring their Learning Style and career interests using the
myBlueprint program and modeling for students how to self-advocate their learning
needs. Students were encouraged to use the Resource room after class lessons or during
lunch to practice the strategies they have been taught in GLE.
We encourage students to continue taking this course in Grade 10 (GLE201) to complement their courses and help them
prepare for the literacy test (OSSLT) next year. Our goal this year is to have the majority of our students using the assistive
technology, Texthelp: Read and Write for their assignments, tests, exams and the Literacy test. It is a program that aids
the students learning and includes: text to speech software, a predicting tool for spelling and a dictionary to clarify
unfamiliar terms, plus many more useful writing and researching tools. On November 4 th and December 9th we held
assistive technology training sessions to help familiarize students with these tools. Many students have expressed the
usefulness of Texthelp and have requested to use this format for their upcoming exams. The best part is that they are also
able to download the program for FREE at home. Please contact the Department Head, Mrs. Pincente (ext. 79138),
if you are interested in a copy of this program for your child.
Our ASD Diploma Support Program welcomed a new Child and Youth Worker (CYW), Ms. Walter, this year. She has
supported the emotional and social needs of the students in the program while Mr. Gumulka managed the students’
programming and transition needs. This upcoming semester, Mr. Snihura and Ms. Gregori will be assisting as ASD Resource
teachers. We plan on holding a networking session and social for parents and students this spring.
Parents/guardians of identified students received Individual Education Plans (IEP) for their children in mid-October,
which outlined the accommodations students are entitled to get for instructional, environmental and assessment needs. It
is important that you review the IEP with your child and contact their Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT) if you
have any questions or concerns.
This semester, IEPs will be sent home by Friday March 13 th 2015. Some students will need to also return a signed
waiver if this is a year that an Identification Placement Review Committee (IPRC) meeting can be waived for your child.
All Grade 12 identified students will have an IPRC meeting held this year and will not receive a waiver. Further
information about the May IPRC meetings will be given closer to the date. If waivers are not returned, an IPRC must be
held for the student. Please return them by March 27th to assist us in coordinating meetings.
This upcoming semester we welcome a new teacher into Special Education at d’Youville, Ms. Anderson, from the
Mathematics department. She will teach a GLE-201 and be in the Resource room as well. She will be responsible for the
caseload for last names F to H. The remaining caseloads are as follows: Ms. Ceci (A-E), Mrs. Pincente (I-O, Vision,
Hearing, Phys./Med) and Ms. Dodemont (P-Z).
We wish our students continued success throughout the new semester and are blessed to serve such an exceptional group
of students on a daily basis.

At this transitional time between semesters, it’s a good reminder to pause and reflect on our school theme: “Pathways to
Joy”. After experiencing the busyness of CPTs and exams, we can now focus on the new beginnings of the second
semester and going forward in the true spirit of joy:
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace” (Romans 15: 13).
We are pleased to offer an upcoming excursion for Gr. 11 students to visit various places of worship and more details will
follow regarding the Grade 12 overnight retreat in late March. We would like to thank the following religion teachers for
their dedication and service to our school community: Mr. Denyszyn, Mr. Finaldi, and Ms. Kresnik.
We wish them all the best in their future endeavours.
P.I.P. ADVENTURES: EAT, PRAY & LOVE
The Planning for Independence (P.I.P) class has managed to strike a balance with work,
prayer and play this semester. Mr. Snihura and Ms. Gregori did a fabulous job as first-time
PIP teachers, and enriched the program as they focused on digital literacy methods,
computer reading programs and outdoor adventures. Presently, the class is working on a
Winter birds unit, having just finished an extensive Native people’s unit. The weekly
business of laminating, recycling, shredding, kitchen details and gardening was still a
commitment that the class maintained for the school. Most of our experienced students also
have the responsibility of work placements at Freshco and Walmart and are doing an
excellent job at these community businesses.
Mr. Snihura has brought the outdoor experience alive for our students. His love
for the outdoors is contagious and the P.I.P. class had had great experiences at
Silver Creek and Crawford Lake this semester. These adventures also helped to
connect to the Native Art and spirituality unit, resulting in the class ending each
day in a community circle and passing a sharing stick around to sum up the
highlight of their day. For Christmas, the class was featured signing and singing the
song “Feed the World” which was aired on dYTV. Our nature- inspired Christmas
door was made of natural and recycled material and was decorated with handmade dream catchers.
The P.I.P. class has made their way to St. Marguerite d’Youville Church every Friday, despite the weather, using transit.
People from the church community have been impressed by their commitment and presented the class with a special social
after one of the Masses. On Wednesdays, Salvation Army also welcomes our class to help out the less fortunate in our
community. A trip to Gage Park on Remembrance Day taught the students the importance of honoring the fallen and still
active soldiers as they serve to keep our country safe and free.
A class that eats together, stays together. Pizza parties, picnics at Heart Lake and Loafer’s Lake,
enjoying Mr. Camara’s weekly recipe and savoring the chocolate we learned to make was so
much fun. But don’t worry, our Fall walks to the park, hiking in the woods, ROPSAA bocce &
bowling tournaments, touring the Royal Ontario Museum and playing floor hockey in the
matrix has kept us in tip-top shape.
Semester 2 we welcome back Mrs. D’Souza and say good bye to Ms. Gregori. We wish her
the best in Co-op and thank her for joining us in our adventures.

d’Youville Drama
Greetings from d’Youville Drama! Can you believe it? It’s already semester 2! As
we settle in for the long ride ahead, why don’t we get caught up on all things
Drama?
Drama Classes
We would like to welcome the new students of the grade 9 and 10 Dramatic Arts classes to our creative
environment. We hope that they enjoy their experience in theatre arts as much as their peers before them.
In December, the semester one Junior/Senior Drama students made history in The Panther’s Playhouse. The class
performed in our first ever Drama Showcase Week. Audiences were treated to two original one-act plays
directed by our Senior Drama students. The first, Cabin 415, written by the talented Leanna Mirto and
Brianna Stewart, was a thrilling murder-mystery that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. The second
performance, C’est L’amour, penned by resident playwrights Sabrina Gomes and Ashley Eschavez, was a
romantic-comedy that left us with that warm fuzzy feeling inside. We are extremely proud of their directorial
debut, as well as the Junior students for their riveting performances. But as all good things come to an end, it is
time for us to bid the Senior Drama students adieu. We wish them all the best for the future and look forward to
seeing them at rehearsals for our spring production.
As we stated in the last issue of Paws & Reflect, we hope to see the return of the Drama - Film/Video course
next year. This is an exciting opportunity for students to become a part of television and movies at d’Youville. If
you have taken grade 9 or 10 Drama you already have the pre-requisite to take this course. If you are interested,
please see Mr. Paul in the theatre for details.
Field Trips
On Wednesday, March 4, semester one and fellow d’Youville Drama students will be taking in a performance of
the exhilarating, multi-award winning musical Once, based on the 2006 indie hit film of the same name. Set in
modern-day Dublin, Once is the story of a Guy who gave up on his music – and his love – and the Girl who
inspired him to dream again. We’ll fill you in on how our trip to the Ed Mirvish theatre goes in our next issue.
For those that missed this opportunity, we hope to book another trip to our favourite theatre company,
Soulpepper Theatre, to see one of their latest productions within the next couple of months. This trip will be
open to all Drama students and anyone involved in the spring production.
Extra-curricular News
Speaking of, casting for our upcoming spring production is complete. Though details are shrouded in mystery, a
few hints have emerged regarding the production – rehearsals will begin this month, and it looks like it’s going to
be a dark suspense-drama with a few surprises. We will update you as we learn more…
Until then, stay warm, and break a leg in semester 2!

Link Crew Update
It has been a busy semester for Link Leaders. Amongst hosting Guys Night and Girls Night In, Link Leaders visited
Grade 9 classrooms to deliver three Academic Follow Ups throughout the semester. The visits focused on
understanding why people make the choices that they do and how others perceive the choices we make. Leaders
facilitated discussions to help grade 9’s understand the importance of using perception when making choices in
school and in life. Students also received information on which resources are available around the school in order to
assist in their success in grade 9. To help Grade 9’s prepare for their first set of high school exams, Link Leaders
organized “Cocoa and Cram” - a study session designed to help ease the stress and anxiety of exams. Students
worked closely with Link Leaders, having their questions answered and enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies.
Link leaders have also been paired with grade 9 students as a part of our Peer-Mentorship Program. This program
allows many grade 9 students the guidance and one-on-one support in order to be successful; Link Leaders have
developed a strong rapport with their protégé and have worked very collaboratively to ensure development and
growth.
Once again, we will be offering a Link Crew Course for grade 11 students next year! We will be conducting
interviews in February to select the Link Leader Team.

The Panther’s Den wraps up Semester One
This semester has been a successful semester for the grade 11 marketing class. Spiritwear and the new Popcorn machine
have been successful additions to the product mix. Students have been working hard to promote d’Y’s spiritwear. The
Panther’s Den now sells short and long sleeve d’Y t-shirts. The short sleeve t-shirts are priced at $10.00 and the long sleeve
shirts are priced at $15.00. Students can fill out an order form at any time and submit it to Mrs. Marasovic in the Business
Office.
The week before Christmas the students had a special Christmas promotion happening at the Panther’s Den called “The
Santa Special 2 for $2.00”. Santa Claus loves his favorite treat, cookies and milk so the d’Y students decided to sell
chocolate milk and Christmas cookies to d’Y students.
Grade 11 Marketing students worked hard painting banners, decorating the store, creating print ads and displaying them
around the school. Congratulations on a successful Christmas Promotion!!! The school store closed January 15 th and will
be reopening next semester in February. See you at the Panther’s Den!
Grade 10 Introduction to Business
The Grade 10 Business students are ready for the Dragon’s Den! These young entrepreneurs all competed in the annual
Young Entrepreneurs Dragon’s Den competition. These students had amazing product ideas like a convertible shoe, a
women’s shoe that converts from a flat into a high heel, innovative padding for football players called Grid Iron, and the
first ever Spanish bakery in Brampton.
First place was awarded to Rachel Doummar and Sara Padovan with the Student Chip card that acts as a bank card at
school. Second place was awarded to Zachary Fernandes and Manjot Gill. They invented the “Dirty Strap” which acts as
soccer cleat sole that is removable allowing athletes to shake off the excess dirt and soil that gets stuck in an athlete’s cleat.
Third Place was a tie between partners, Latonya Banton and Kara Peterkin, and Daniel Miller and Donneal Kerr.
Congratulations to all the students for their innovative business ideas! These students will be competing in the “Young
Entrepreneurs, Make Your Pitch” provincial competition. Good luck!

AAAA OFSAA Senior Boys Volleyball
In November d’Youville hosted the best AAAA Senior Boys Volleyball in the province, along with Louis Arbour, Brampton
Christian, and Mayfield. Students from d’Youville had an opportunity to volunteer to help host the OFSAA tournament.
Hayden Canning and Josephina Campanella on the microphone introduced team line ups and coaching staff, while other
students called lines, swept the court during time outs and sold ticket at the door. Staff and students took in some intense
volleyball matches and were impressed by the skills of the participating schools! Thanks to all those students who
volunteered their time to make it a success!

Specialist High Skills Major health
care students and sport students
participated in a SHSM recruitment

students and their parents filled the
auditorium to learn about the SHSM
program for the 2015-2016 school
year. Our current SHSM students
talked about their experiences in
SHSM, and how their COOP and

enhanced their skill sets and
application process for college and
university. Many grade 10 students
attended and now have applied to
the SHSM program for 2015-2016.
The health care students in grade 11

Safe Talk organization.
These
students obtained skills and training
in mental illness and will be able to
help others who may be in crisis.
The sport students successfully
completed fitness training with
LEBERT fitness training systems.
SHSM students participated in
various conditioning, training drills
and exercises that can be utilized in a
training or fitness facility.
This
training is a valuable industry
certification.
Both SHSM sport and health care

Healthcare
Disease outbreaks, microscopes, taking vital signs, first aid CPR, assisting in minor surgery, throat swabs.
Sound interesting? These are just a few of the topics our d’Y Healthcare students have focused on this
semester. Like working with your hands and being on your feet? Healthcare classes at d’Youville offer
opportunities to learn real skills that are used in the healthcare field every day! Let’s hear what some of our
graduating grade 12 healthcare students had to say…
“Healthcare has helped me develop new skills I never thought I would have developed before. Not only has
it been great motivation in further exploring different ways of providing care for others, but also it has
provided me the knowledge and leadership skills I need in order to work in a healthcare setting as a medical
professional.”
- Daniel Campagna
“Taking healthcare has allowed me to develop my passion for the medical field. I have recently been
accepted to Wilfrid Laurier University for health sciences! Thanks to the healthcare team!
-Himanshi Khurana
“I recommend healthcare for anyone who has a love for caring for others in need of help, and most
importantly, a love for medicine.”
-Chassidy Simon
“Healthcare has helped me to understand and expose myself to medical terminology. Shout out to Mr.
McAllister and Ms. Kurpaska for giving me the best health care experience!”
