Resolution 1-12-S Resolution to Support the Right of Free Speech As
Pertaining to Western Kentucky University Students
PURPOSE: For the Student Government Association of Western Kentucky University to support the removal of the “External Computer Use and Ethics” section from the
Western Kentucky University Student Handbook.
WHEREAS: Western Kentucky University shall not abridge the right of free speech as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of
America, and
WHEREAS: Western Kentucky University is a public institution funded, not only by the students, but also by the taxpayers, and
WHEREAS: Western Kentucky University shall immediately cease deeming any speech as inappropriate and shall immediately cease disciplining students on the basis of
“inappropriate” speech, and
WHEREAS: Western Kentucky University shall continue to not actively police websites which may, or may not, be accessed, owned, moderated, managed, or operated by students of Western Kentucky University, and
THEREFORE: Be it resolved that the Student Government Association of Western Kentucky
University supports the removal of the “External Computer Use and Ethics” section from the Western Kentucky University Handbook. The Student
Government Association of Western Kentucky University does not support any communication or speech which would encourage or support violence against any individual, group, or entity. The right of students to express themselves in a peaceful manner shall be upheld by Western Kentucky University.
