iLearn@Home: Snowballs Objective: Students will be able to gather, analyze and graph data. Next Generation Science Standard: 07-PS1-2 Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred. Task: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Use a measuring device to form three snowballs of different diameter. (for example: 2inches, 4inches, and 6inches) Record your observations of each snowball’s diameter in the 0 min row. Place each snowball on a separate plate inside and start a timer. Record the diameter every five minutes for each for a total of 30 minutes or until the snowball has melted (if before). Use the data to construct a line graph. Each snowball should be given its own line. Be sure to use a key to indicate the line for each snowball. The independent variable is time (x-axis) and the diameter is the dependent variable (y-axis). Explain what type of reaction has taken place.
