Modules Synopsis Module 1: Understanding Your Role as Supervisor This module begins with an exploration of your individual style of management. We then proceed to look at the myriad of responsibilities associated with moving into the ranks of management and leadership. Discussions center on the responsibilities to manage and lead workgroups, individual employees and personal responsibilities. Additionally, individuals will address their career development plan with regards to their role for the next year. Module 2: Communication This module begins to explore the various means of effectively communicating within the workplace. A general overview of effective communication will be discussed including practicing communication techniques and active listening skills. Communicating non-verbally, via phone, email, in meetings and providing feedback will all be discussed during this class. Module 3: Conflict Resolution This module takes a more proactive stance in dealing with conflict as well as the focus shifting towards viewing conflict as a way of making positive changes. Participants will discover different modes of conflict and have the opportunity to role play effective methods of resolving conflicts. Module 4: Management/Leadership Styles This module will explore various leadership/management styles while encouraging you to discover the style that is most comfortable for you. Participants will learn strategies and techniques to help sharpen skills and maximize the potential of their employees. Module 5: Building and Maintaining Teams In this module, participants will learn of the stages of team building and assess where their team is now. Various strategies to provide encouragement, strengthening of the team and increasing team dynamics while allowing for individual contribution will be emphasized. Discussions will include various forms of teams, how to motivate teams, and identifying what the supervisor’s role. Module 6: Performance Management and Coaching This module addresses one of the least favorite but most important aspects of being a supervisor – managing the work behaviors of their employees to effective ends. The core competencies associated with the overall mission of the university as well as ensuring the competencies focused upon in an individual’s plan is supportive of the mission and goals. Participants will practice having a face-toface conversation with the employee and practice the art of refining a person’s ideas, handling tough information and listening effectively. We will also focus on the ability to be proactive, recognizing and adjusting behaviors through coaching prior to transitioning into the effective use of the progressive discipline process. Module 7: Enhancing Productivity Making decisions and getting tasks accomplished through the team is the hallmark of an effective supervisor. This module aims to enhance decision making skills through exposure to different decision making techniques. The important topic of delegation will be addressed, an area that proves to be an issue for many who are promoted. We will learn impactful delegating strategies as well as methods of following up on tasks. These skills have proven to be vital to any supervisor and essential for all who want to enhance their productivity. Module 8: Putting It All Together This module will give us a chance to review all of the previous modules and devise a plan of action for impactful leadership moving forward.
