DEAR FRIENDS

We are pleased to share with you the

2015 Annual Report of The Foundation for Mott Community College. For more than 90 years now, MCC has thrived on a tradition of excellence, reaching out to create opportunity for all. As a valued member of this great community, you know MCC continues to make a difference in students’ lives. We are indeed making a tremendous impact!

You’ve probably heard stories about how one person can make a big difference, in his or her own small way. Whenever we reach out a hand to help someone, and that person pays it forward, we can positively influence the condition of so many more people. Yes, the power of one is amazing, and now The FMCC has an excellent opportunity to capitalize on that sentiment. even during these tough times: they’re passionate about supporting the college.

Every single gift to The Foundation for

MCC helps the college reach its goals by serving the entire campus community.

We realize you’re being asked to make donations to so many different causes, but you are truly making a difference when you give to MCC. Your generosity is, first of all, sincerely appreciated. Secondly, your gift really matters. When you give to MCC you can immediately witness the rewards of your giving: you change lives, you improve lives, you impact lives—and everyone benefits!

In these uncertain times, the need is great for many of our students and their families. We need your support, now more than ever. Please remember this: every gift is vital; every gift is significant. So, please give as your heart dictates. As always, your support is greatly appreciated.

This year we launched We are 1, the

MCC 2015-16 employee giving campaign in an effort to urge every employee to make a gift of any amount. We want to show the community that we believe in

MCC, that we are united, that we truly are one! We’re aiming for 100 percent participation because we know that sends a powerful message: charity most certainly begins at home. To date, MCC employees are steadily making contributions,

Sincerely,

Lennetta B. Coney, President

FROM THE PRESIDENT

On May 2, 2015, I presided over my first graduation ceremony as president of Mott

Community College. As the graduates crossed the stage to receive their diplomas,

I thought about how each one represents a unique story of achievement and triumph.

And the fact that they chose Mott as their pathway to excellence did not get lost in translation!

While I am proud of our graduates and current students, I am equally proud of

MCC employees who have devoted their professional lives to preparing students and supporting the college. It’s been a little more than a year now since I became president — and what a wonderful year it’s been. My Mott College family welcomed me with open arms at the start of my journey here. I realized then that we are family, that truly, we are one.

In September, The Foundation for

Mott Community College launched our

2015-16 employee giving campaign: We

Are 1! The goal of this campaign is 100% participation. I’ve encouraged employees to imagine the impact of absolutely everyone giving, to consider how their gifts can create opportunities, impact lives, and inspire hope. Every gift matters, every gift counts, no gift is too small. We want faculty, staff, and students to recognize the value inherent in every gift and how important it is for our community to see that we all stand firmly behind the mission of this college: providing high quality, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities and services to the region.

Our employees believe in the mission of this college and they are demonstrating that every day. We’re asking you to join them by continuing to support MCC. Our college has benefited immensely from the ongoing support provided by generous people like you — the vast number of individuals, families, companies and institutions listed in this annual report.

MCC simply cannot carry out its mission and arrive at our preferred future as a college without your commitment.

Your gifts have instilled hope and ensured positive outcomes for countless students.

Many of them are on their way to leading productive lives — pursuing further academic ventures, embarking on successful careers, and even giving back to the community that nurtured them — thanks to all of you.

I hope you will remain committed to spurring students on to their pathway of excellence at MCC, and beyond. Your gifts clearly demonstrate that you believe in

Mott Community College. This gives me boundless hope for our future.

Thank you, again, for your staunch commitment to MCC.

Looking forward,

Beverly Walker-Griffea, Ph.D., President

While I am proud of our graduates and current students,

I am equally proud of

MCC employees who have devoted their professional lives to preparing students and supporting the college.

COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPISTS PROVIDE STRONG SUPPORT

TO MOTT CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Judge Thomas and

Magdalene Yeotis

6

Judge Thomas and

Magdalene Yeotis know the value of education, and have demonstrated a strong commitment to Mott Community

College through their ongoing support.

With decades of service and philanthropic efforts under their belt, from the athletics arena to college programs to various community pursuits, the Yeotis legacy has been laid down for others to follow. As ardent supporters, they know how philanthropy and service go hand in hand, that they are powerful ways to advance a community.

Yeotis, a retired Genesee County Circuit Court

Judge, has made an indelible mark on the college and in the community. Having served on The

Foundation for Mott Community College and the

MCC Alumni Association board of directors for many years, this proud MCC alumnus and former

MCC basketball player is one of the founding members of the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame and the Bruin Club of Genesee County.

The Bruin Club has donated nearly $2 million in scholarships to student-athletes at MCC and the

Bear Mascot that Mott College uses today is the brainchild of Judge Yeotis.

“I had great professors who laid a great foundation for me to pursue my baccalaureate degree and my law degree,” he reminisced. “They gave me the confidence and fortitude to pursue my career.”

Serving on more than 30 non-profit community and civic organizations over a number of years, often as chairman or president, Judge Yeotis is a founding member of New Paths. Located in Flint,

New Paths was established in 1979 to serve as a cost-effective alternative for jail—or prison-bound adults with non-violent offenses.

Judge Yeotis received one of the community’s highest honors, the C.S. Mott Citizen of the Year by the

Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce in 2001.

The C.S. Mott Citizen of the Year Award honors an individual who exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit of the man for whom the award was named,

Charles Stewart Mott, and who has had significant impact on the community and its citizens. In

2004, he received MCC’s most prestigious honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award, which recognizes outstanding men and women for their career achievement and significant contributions to the community.

“So much has been given to me—‘To whom much is given, much is required,’ ” said Judge Yeotis.

“That’s why it’s so important for me to support our schools and our community.”

HIDDEN GEM FOR STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY:

Transitions School of Cosmetology Careers

8

It is, perhaps, one of the best kept secrets in our community: a full service beauty salon and spa, right here on the

Mott Community College main campus in Flint.

Open to all students, the campus community and the general public, MCC’s Transitions School of

Cosmetology Careers takes pride in providing a high-quality, state-licensed educational program to students, as well as offering a broad range of services to clients. All services are performed by senior students under the supervision of licensed, professional cosmetology, esthetic, and nail technology instructors. MCC Cosmetology students have an opportunity to sharpen their skills, utilizing the latest trends and products for designing hairstyles, skin treatments and care for fingernails, hands and feet. They provide the most sought-after treatments at a fraction of the cost of traditional salons, all under the supervision of our highly-qualified instructors.

A wide variety of cosmetology careers are available for students to pursue after earning degrees or certificates. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the demand for hairdressers, hairstylists, cosmetologists, and skin care specialists (all known as personal appearance workers) is projected to grow. The job growth is expected to rise at a rate of 13% through 2022, according to the Bureau of

Labor Statistics (2015).

That’s music to Carol Nielsen’s ears, Transitions

Coordinator/Professor. So, what sets MCC’s cosmetology school apart from so many the others in the area? The emphasis on quality education for students makes the difference.

“Education is our top priority,” Nielsen said.

“Our instructors are teachers with degrees. The majority of them still work in salons, and even own their own salons. Every one of our instructors comes to us with at least 15 years of experience.”

Students who graduate from Transitions are equipped with the knowledge and experience to successfully pass the state board exams and to provide all types of services in today’s industry.

And as a result, students leave MCC’s cosmetology programs armed with the tools and certification, preparing them to assume roles in employment at entry-level with the potential for future advancement through continuing education and practical experience. MCC’s programs provide the specialized instruction necessary for students to pass Michigan’s State

Board Licensing Exams, preparing students to pursue a variety of career options in today’s cosmetology world—from Platform Artist to

Hairdresser to Salon Owner.

“Our facilities are outstanding, we have up-to-date labs and facilities, and currently, we’re the only school in Genesee County that offers an esthetician class,” Nielsen added.

CREATING A LEGACY

10

James Drummond

James Drummond knows the value of a good education—so did his beloved wife, Alla. Jim Drummond, a former MCC administrator and professor, decided to honor his wife in a way that he knew would please her.

He recently established a $15,000 fund in her name, the

Alla Operenko-Drummond Scholarship Endowment.

Alla Operenko grew up in Minsk, Belarus where she attended college and eventually completed the

Russian equivalent of a Ph.D. in English. She then began a successful teaching and research career at

The Belarusian State University (BSU). In 1991, she visited the USA and met with a group of

Central Michigan University students who had been hosted by the BSU three months earlier.

One of those students was Rebecca George, who introduced Alla to her father, James Drummond, a widower and professor at MCC. Three years later they married. Soon after, she began tutoring and then teaching foreign language and English as a

Second Language (ESL).

She worked for more than 10 years at MCC before being diagnosed with cancer. She passed away in

2010.

This scholarship is meant to honor her memory by providing assistance to students who are studying in fields of ESL or foreign language. Jim

Drummond chose to make this gift to acknowledge the importance of education and Alla’s life work in the ESL arena. Special emphasis will be given to individuals who are non-native speakers of English and/or a foreign language student, even if his or her native language is English.

Several years ago, a similar scholarship endowment, the Kathleen Drummond Scholarship to commemorate the life of his first wife, “Kate,” was established to assist women in achieving their educational goals. She was killed in an automobile accident in March 1991. This scholarship is awarded on a financial need basis to a female student who is 30 years of age or older with children.

The Foundation for MCC is deeply grateful to the generosity displayed by the Drummond family.

If you’re interested in creating a specific fund to memorialize or pay tribute to a loved one or friend, there are many ways to set up a fund at MCC.

You may create an endowment, a designated fund or a pass-through fund. If you would like to contribute to the fund that Jim Drummond has established or create your own, please contact us at (810) 762-0425.

ALUMNI

AWARDS

Each year, the Alumni Association of Mott Community College presents the Distinguished Alumni

Awards. The recipients represent a select number of individuals who have proven to be an inspiration.

They have earned significant career and/or personal achievements, have had a long lasting effect on a business or community, and have demonstrated a visible commitment to the community. The recipients have attended Flint Junior College, Flint Junior Community College, Flint Community

College, Genesee Community College, and/or Mott Community College. All of our honorees are selected by a committee comprised of community leaders, as well as college faculty and staff.

Bestowing this recognition represents one of MCC’s most prestigious honors. Portraits are located in a permanent display in the Alumni Room, located in the Prahl College Center.

Awardees of the Distinguished

Alumni Award and Outstanding

Retiree awards, past and present, were photographed, along with MCC President

Beverly Walker-Griffea (pink suit) and FMCC President
