Kim D’Souza “Through A Celebration Of Our Faith All Who Enter Our School May Grow Together As A Christian Community” January 2012 Volume 1, Issue 5 Prayer for Children Jesus, out of love for us you came to Earth in the form of a child. In your lifetime you welcomed and embraced children. You brought the synagogue leader’s daughter back to life. You healed the royal official’s son, the centurion’s servant, the widow’s son, the little boy who had seizures. You restored Jairus’ daughter to life and gave her back to her parents. You said that anyone who welcomes a child in your name welcomes you, and that only those with childlike hearts can share in your heavenly reign. We pray for all children, especially those whose innocence is stolen away by neglect, poverty, war, abuse, harmful work and social wrongs. May your grace, working through the hearts and hands of compassionate women and men everywhere, enable children to experience love, healing and the joy of life. Let us pray for the virtue of selfcontrol so that we will resist the temptation to cause harm to ourselves or to others around us. A Person of Self-Control: Is patient Knows how to wait his/her turn Knows how to avoid physical aggression Can calm him/herself down before reacting to situations Can think things through and do what is best for everyone Page 2 COLD WEATHER GUIDELINES SCHOOL COUNCIL The next meetings of the School Advisory Council will be on : January 25, February 22, April 25 and May 30. Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. All are invited to attend. The board policy recommends that students go out for recess unless it is below –25 degrees Celsius with the wind factor included. Please ensure your children are appropriately dressed for outdoor play with hats, scarves, mittens, boots and snow pants/snowsuit. On wet and slushy days, students often get wet, therefore it is helpful if students have a change of clothing (e.g. sweat pants and shirt) that can be left at school or in their backpack as it is often diffi- cult for parents to leave work to bring an extra set of clothes. Weather conditions are reviewed daily and decisions around outdoor play and length of recesses are determined. Students should be prepared to go outside. It is also imperative that all students have a proper pair of running shoes for Physical Education classes. Running shoes with platforms or wheels are not safe. Please ensure your child(ren) have a proper pair of running shoes left at school or in their school bag on a daily basis. CHRISTMAS GIFT CARDS AND COATS FOR KIDS Thank you to our families and staff for participating in our Christmas drive to support needy families in our school and St. Anne Parish community. Through your generosity and kindness, St. Joachim School will be supporting many families with food and gifts. Your participation is deeply appreciated. “Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, you do unto me.” Matthew 25:35 MEDICATIONS Parents are reminded in order for students to have access to medicine on a daily basis or for us to store medication in the school there MUST be a consent form filled out by a doctor. This includes students who need to temporarily take medication for an illness (e.g. antibiotics). You may obtain the appropriate board required forms from the school office or school website as you will need to take them with you to the doctor to be signed. All medication is stored and distributed through the office. If your child has a medical condition requiring specialized supervision, please notify the school office. January 2012 Volume 1, Issue 5 Page 3 HOW FULL IS YOUR BUCKET? On Friday January 13th, Grades 1 – 8 students gathered in the gym for a reading of How Full is Your Bucket? by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer. ‘Through simple prose and vivid illustrations, this heartwarming book encourages positive behaviour as children see how rewarding it is to express daily kindness, appreciation, and love. This book explains to children that we all carry an invisible bucket in which we keep our feelings about ourselves. When our buckets are full, we are happy; when they are empty, we are sad. It is important to know that we can fill our own bucket and so can others. We fill buckets by saying nice things to the people around us. We fill buckets by doing nice things for people.’ From http://www.teachingheart.net/bucketfillingtakehomesheet.pdf THE THEORY OF THE DIPPER AND THE BUCKET Each of us has an invisible bucket. It is constantly emptied or filled, depending on what others say or do to us. Each of us also has an invisible dipper. When we use that dipper to fill other people’s buckets – by saying or doing things to increase their positive emotions – we also fill our own bucket. But when we use that dipper to dip from other’s buckets – by saying or doing things that decrease their positive emotions – we diminish ourselves. A full bucket gives us a positive outlook and renewed energy. Every drop in that bucket makes us stronger and more optimistic. An empty bucket poisons our outlook, saps our energy, and undermines our will. That’s why every time someone dips from our bucket, it hurts us. So we face a choice every moment of every day: We can fill one another’s buckets, or we can dip from them. It’s an important choice – one that profoundly influences our relationships, productivity, health and happiness. -from http://www.middlesex.k12.nj.us/Portals/0/PDFs/Watchung/bucket.pdf Encourage your child to tell you how full is his/her bucket is and how they have filled someone’s bucket each day. PARKING LOT Community members are reminded that parking on school property over night is not permitted. During the winter, snow removal equipment cannot properly navigate around cars. Vehicles that remain on the property overnight will be towed at the owner’s expense. Thank you for your cooperation. A decision to cancel school transportation and or to close schools is usually made by 6:00am and will be announced on local radio stations. Ultimately, decisions to cancel transportation are based on safety considerations and are made on the basis that once students are delivered to schools it may be problematic getting them home if conditions do not improve or worsen.
