Supreme Court Landmark Cases Project
Objectives:
 Analyze milestone Supreme Court decisions.
Procedure: Students will work in groups of two to complete the project. You will be assigned one of the
following cases:
Brown v. Board of Education
Dred Scott v. Sandford
Gibbons v. Ogden
Gideon v. Wainwright
Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier
Korematsu v. United States
Mapp v. Ohio
Marbury v. Madison
McCulloch v. Maryland
Miranda v. Arizona
New Jersey v. T.L.O
Plessy v. Ferguson
Regents of the U. of California v. Baake
Roe v. Wade
Texas v. Johnson
Tinker v. Des Moines
United States v. Nixon
Use the following website: www.landmarkcases.org complete the following tasks on the form (Supreme
Court Project Form) found on my website.
1. Four sentence overview of the case. (Background Summary)
2. Four of the main points delivered in the majority opinion.
3. Two of the main points delivered in the dissenting opinion.
4. Two sentence (minimum) summary of the Decision.
Use the following website: www.oyez.org complete the following task on the same form.
1. Organize the justices and their ideology by how they voted.
2. Find the justices and their ideology by clicking on their name and reading their biography (usually in
the first paragraph).
Print your form and have it ready to be posted around the room during tomorrow’s class.
Using a gallery walk format, collect information about each of the cases on the notesheet provided. You
will be using this notesheet to take a quiz on the landmark cases.
