Review the minutes from December
11, 2013
Decide on whether to change the
role of the LCSC to the following:
To lend assistance to the LC
program by ensuring support for LC
faculty, building professional
fellowship among LC faculty,
scheduling LC faculty gatherings,
assessing LCs, and coordinating
integration of support services. (5
minutes)
Review the LC Web page and
discuss the enrollments in the LC
sections: Active Section
Enrollments (All Active Sections).
(15 minutes)
Minutes were approved as written.
LCSC approved as the committee
charge.
 You are what you eat: READ-10091,ENGL-101-91
 23/25 active enrollments
 Solid foundations: MATH-090-92,
GEOL-100-92,CHC-090-92
 9/15 active enrollments
 Realize the connection: MATH095-91,CHEM-101-91
 23/30 active enrollments
 EXCEL-eration and Momentum:
MATH-250-90,PHYSIC-250-90
 17/24 enrollments. 1 more
student in M250. Rick is
checking on.
There are 4 LCs this semester and
we had to de-link 4.
2.0 Inclusiveness
The College and its structures and processes are characterized by inclusiveness, openness to input, and respect…

Status on completing application to
National Summer Institute on
Learning Communities (NSILC) –
Daniel (5 minutes)
$1290/person plus travel to attend
NSILC. Send a group of 5 or 6.
Need to have goal for attending.
Goal would be to come up with plan
for LC. Maybe plan do conference
in Summer 2015 because we are
not sure where we are right now.
Purpose is to develop a plan for
implementing LCs at Crafton.
Discussed going through for
another year and discuss how much
we want to devote to LCs at

Crafton. Application involves
identifying sticking points. Can
spend year collecting this type of
information and make more
purposeful.

Discuss alternative
conceptualizations for LC to
enhance CT and synthesis in
transfer courses (25 minutes)
LCSC decided to re-examine
possibility of attending in Summer
2015.
A different type of LC is an
immersion program. In math have
952 and 090 linked. Could link
study skills course. Spanish is
thinking of doing something similar,
101 and 102 in the same semester.
Study skills would really help here
as well. To control for load,
counseling had a big role in keeping
students from enrolling in too many
courses.
Explore creating business LCs like
accounting with economics as LC.
Work well for business majors.
Could put statistics with something.
FYE basic skills LCs. Reading and
English co-requisite courses may do
LCs. Would be good to have
another piece to this one like a
counseling course.
February 22 is sticky Friday and we
need to have plan for LCs.

Discuss Fall 2014 LC offerings and
training for LC faculty (35 minutes)
How do we want to develop LCs for
Fall 2014?
-Put a call out to Faculty and ask if
they want to participate
-We need to give them some
guidelines for LC
-A suggested goal can be
contextualization of curriculum
-FIRE-100/101 have had soft
enrollments. Consider these for LCs
with English.
-There is a form in LC handbook.
-Creating an LC where synthesis
takes place in CHC-099. A group of
students in section that are in LC.
They go once a week in CHC-099
for synthesis. Two instructors have
to be committed to synthesis.
Faculty will need to participate in
training if they do LC. Needs to be
done early. One time when very
successful. Opportunity to work
and develop curriculum. Look at
conducting a retreat in late April.
May need to have alternative to
attending retreat like a facilitator
Daniel will send out invitation to us
to review form with suggestion.
Information back from people by
February 3 to review at LCSC
February 4. We can have ready by
February 21.
Put on agenda to plan LC retreat for
late April.
Discuss generating web site with
integrated assignments on future
agenda.
February 4 agenda is to review LC
proposals and start working on
retreat.
with workbook for people
participating in LC.
If new LC can you serve as a
mentor to help answer questions.
Develop web page with integrated
assignments.
Retreat for training is on April 25 at
the Holiday Inn.
