2010-2013 Catholic School Learning Plan for St. John of the Cross School 2010-2011 (Year 1) Progress Report Pillar Catholic Community, Culture, and Caring SMART Goals By the end of June 2013, St. John of the Cross students’ sense of belonging, inclusion, connectedness and safety will increase compared to baseline data to be collected using the CCCC survey in 2010-2011 Action Plans to Support SMART Goal(s) Catholic Community of Culture and Caring Action Team was established Catholic, Community, Culture and Caring survey has been implemented Virtues Program was evident throughout the year -the virtues were highly visible (exhibited in the front foyer, high traffic areas, they are included in the student agendas as well as the monthly newsletters -virtues included in daily announcements, classrooms, liturgical celebrations, Virtue Assemblies -cross-curricular connections to the virtues were shared with the teachers A positive school-parish relationship was fostered throughout the year - pastoral plan was developed collaboratively; Parish/Home/School Symposium was attended by the school team and the parish team; parish priest visited the school to celebrate the Eucharist (Opening Mass and Easter Mass) and also visited the classes of the students receiving sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist; whole school was transported to the Church for the Graduation/Year End Mass; ShareLife fundraising was done at the school and presented to the Parish; St. Vincent de Paul Society at the parish was supported by our Christmas Angel on the Tree Project as well as through our Food Drives Completed In Progress Comments This is a continuous and on-going focus. Our Catholic Community of Culture and Caring Action Team will continue to collaboratively develop strategies and implement programs to increase our students’ sense of belonging, inclusion, connectedness and safety. We will be utilizing the data from the Climate Survey to develop an action plan for the 20112012 school year. X The parish and school team have worked together to increase the connectedness between church, home and school. Our Family Advent/Feast Day Mass was very well attended by the families in our community. It is our intent to invite the Parish Team to our Fall Family Barbeque to continue to foster this relationship. Students from our intermediate grades attended the Mississauga North We Are One Conference and the Called to Action Conference. They came back and shared ideas we could implement at the school with the members of our Catholic Student Council. Social Justice Projects were supported – -Dr. Simone and Called to Action Conference Christian Student Leadership was evident -Christian Student Council was in place with each class having a representative. Activities included Eden Food Bank Hunger Awareness Breakfast, Earth Week Activities, Healthy Snack Week Activities and Spirit Days Registered as part of Ministry Healthy Schools Recognition Program -monthly ‘healthy snack week’ -Healthy Eating/Get Active articles in the school newsletter Participated in Environmental (Eco) Projects -recycling program -Earth Week Activities including Litterless lunch, daily divisional quizzes, Turning off the Lights Program Literacy By June 2013, student performance at St. John of the Cross School will increase by 5% on each EQAO assessment of literacy. Uninterrupted blocks of time(100 mins/day) were in place for literacy instruction Central Text Room was utilized for a wide variety of texts Gradual Release of Learning was evident and used to scaffold learning Student achievement data was collected to monitor progress and to determine next steps Common assessment tools were collaboratively developed Teacher moderation and moderated marking were facilitated Common instruction and assessment language was being used in classrooms Anchor/ success criteria charts were used to scaffold student learning A number of our students volunteered to present at the Eden Food Bank Annual Hunger Awareness Breakfast. This event was attended by many members of the community and highlighted the need for support of our local food bank. A student from St. Aloysius Gonzaga S. S. spoke to our school community about supporting their outreach project – building a school in the Dominican Republic. It is our intent to continue to be active participants in the Ministry Healthy Schools Recognition Program in consultation with our Catholic Student Council and Catholic School Council. This is a continuous and on-going focus. We have been working throughout the year organizing our Central Text Room and doing a gap analysis with regards to resources. We have allocated some of our school budget to literacy resources. X We continue to collect and analyze data and work as a school team to identify strategies to support our students. The staff has utilized assistive technology to support literacy instruction and assessment. Numeracy Pathways and Transitions By June 2013, student performance at St. John of the Cross School will increase by 5% on each EQAO assessment of numeracy. At St. John of the Cross School we will continue to work together collaboratively as a team to support the transitions of children Collaborative processes were implemented to guide interventions and support differentiation Professional learning focused on continuous improvement of teaching practices Collaborative Learning took place in all divisions Purposeful and Accountable Talk was evident in classrooms throughout the day Higher Order and Critical Thinking was a focus in all classrooms Expected Practice – Three Part Lesson was a school focus and all classrooms began the implementation process Manipulatives were utilized in all classrooms Numeracy was a focus in Teaching Learning Cycles Working towards uninterrupted blocks of time(60 mins/day) for intense, focused mathematics instruction Classrooms developed ‘math learning communities’ where math talk was encouraged on a daily basis Numeracy Guides to Effective Instruction were utilized at all levels Cross grade visits took place to observe best practices Special Assignment Teacher supported the school Numeracy focus Professional Resources were utilized – Making Math Meaningful by Marian Small; Ministry DVDs This is a continuous and on-going focus. Our Junior Teachers attended the Stream meetings with teachers from other schools. This ‘professional learning’ guided the teachers as they began the implementation process of the Three Part Lesson. X We did a ‘gap analysis’ of Math Resources and manipulatives in the school and allocated funding to ensure that all classrooms have the recommended Math manipulatives readily available to students. The focus of professional learning was numeracy. We utilized a variety of professional resources. Topics included: The Big Ideas, The Three Part LessonDelving Deeper, the Math Processes and the Achievement Chart. TEAM approach was in place (a shared, collective responsibility) for all students This is a continuous and on-going focus. X from grade level to grade level Employee Support and Training Expanded Accountability and Transparency Transition process was clearly defined with explicit steps and strategies -elementary to secondary -Kindergarten to Grade 1 -transitions for ASD students At - risk students were tracked and monitored Individualized programs were implemented to address student strengths and interests (differentiation of instruction) Grade 8 teachers and support personnel met with high school personnel to facilitate transition planning. By the end of June 2013, staff will demonstrate an ongoing commitment to attend ministry and system-wide training with a focus on professional learning. Staff to access PD place professional development and training database system Evidence of staff attendance at and completion of mandatory in-services and training sessions Evidence of compliance with Emergency Procedures Training for all staff (e.g., Lockdown Procedures, Fire Drills) Selected staff to receive training and certification in Crisis Prevention and Intervention, First Aid, etc. Staff participation in job-embedded professional learning This is a continuous and on-going focus. By the end of June 2013, St. John of the Cross school will report balanced budgets on an annual basis. By June 2013, St. John of the Cross School Council will adhere to the collection, recording and reporting processes for funds that are generated through their activities. Staff to access PD place professional development for training opportunities on budgeting process and procedures Staff will continue to use the Financial Support Tool provided through the Finance Department School Council chairs will yearly receive the DP Catholic School Council Resource Handbook outlining processes in handling funds School Council members will be encouraged to attend Board and Family level in-services and training sessions including Board-wide training every October for the specific roles of the Council Special Education Team and Administrator met with teachers when planning class placements for the following year. Planning was done with parental input to help facilitate smooth transitions. X This is a continuous and on-going focus. X
