Literary Connections Activity Directions Concept by: Letitia Hughes Choose one of each of the following items from a literary work and cut them apart on small strips of paper placing them in envelopes or boxes. Make sure no two envelopes contain the same items. Object or symbol Theme Character Setting Quote Event Divide your class into small teams. Have them draw one item at a time out of the envelope without changing the order and write the items on the board or chart paper. Make as many different envelopes as you need. Each group has to establish a connection between each item drawn and present it to the class. 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, 5 to 6, 6 to 1 Have the class listen to the connection to see if they may devise a stronger connection. If they want to challenge a group’s connection, have them write an exit card with their challenge connection on it and turn it in on the way out the door. A few extra credit points can be awarded for valid challenges.
