The operating system of a computer is the software that allows the computer to work. It provides the framework under which the software applications run. An operating system is the type of computer system you have such as Window 8 or Window 7, Mac OS, etc. The applications are the software that actually allows the user to do something with the computer. Without the applications, all you can do is change settings and navigate among the folders. You can purchase software CDs from a software company or download from a software company’s web site such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Photoshop, The Sims, Adobe Premiere, Quickbooks, etc.. Computer Software How do you install and run programs? Step 1: INSTALL When you insert a greeting card program disc in the CD drive for the first time, the computer begins the procedure of installing the greeting card program on the hard disk. Step 3: USE The greeting card program executes. Using this program, you can create custom greeting cards. p. 11 - 12 Fig. 1-10 Step 2: RUN Once installed, you can instruct the computer to run the greeting card program. The computer transfers instructions from the hard disk to memory. Next Computer Software What is a programmer?
