End of the Week Wrap Up
Literacy
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a relaxing
and enjoyable holiday season. We are back in
school and in our normal routine. Students have
been busy learning many new things this week. We
started a new reading unit, practiced solving
addition and subtraction word problems, and made
New Year Resolutions.
This week in reading we started our 3 Unit –
Nonfiction. Students have learned about the three
different types of Nonfiction: Literary Nonfiction,
Reference Book, and Biography. A Literary
Nonfiction book “talks” to the reader and gives real
life facts. A Reference Book gives facts that are
organized carefully (often into sections) in order for
the reader to find information quickly. Lastly, a
Biography gives facts about a person’s life. We will
continue to practice finding examples of each type of
nonfiction. We also learned about different text
features that are found in nonfiction texts. The eight
nonfiction text features we learned are: table of
contents, headings, photographs, illustrations,
captions, bold print words, a glossary, and an index.
We will continue to explore nonfiction texts and
search for these nonfiction text features in the
upcoming weeks. Overall, it is important for students
to understand that readers read nonfiction texts to
learn information (new facts), and that nonfiction
text features help readers find information easily.
Please see the attached parent letter about our
Nonfiction unit for more information about what we
will learn throughout this unit.
In your child’s Home Folder you will find a
Scholastic Book Order. Orders are due a Friday,
January 11th. There are some great book choices
this month! Remember every order that is placed
allows our classroom to get new books :)
A new math game is also in your child’s Home
Folder. From now on, students do not need to
turn in anything for the math game homework.
Remember there is No School next Friday – 1/15 or
Monday 1/18.
Have a great weekend,
Sarah Healy
Math
This week in math we have been working with
math story problems for both addition and
subtraction! This is a difficult concept, but
students are doing a great job. Students must
first read the math story problem and find the
key words in the problem that determine if the
problem is an addition or subtraction problem.
After students figure out if the story problem is
an addition or subtraction problem, they must
draw a picture to prove their thinking, create a
math sentence (addition or subtraction
sentence) and write the answer! Today we had
an assessment on story problems. Next week
we will begin our next module – 5 on Doubles!
Please see the attached parent letter for more
information.

In Writing Workshop we have entered into the second
stage of writing in our Personal Narrative Unit –
Generating Ideas. This week we have focused on
verbal and written story telling! We will continue to
generate ideas of possible personal narratives.
In word work we have been busy practicing long
vowel sounds. Before break students learned that
long A sounds are spelled with either a sneaky e
(a_e), -ai, or -ay. The long E sounds are spelled with
either an -ee or -ea, where the long I sounds are
spelled with either –ight, -ie, with a sneak e (i_e), or
with a –y. This week we focused on reviewing long
vowels A, E, and I, as well as the long vowel O! The
long O sounds are spelled with –ow, -oa, or with a
sneaky e (o_e). Next week we will learn about the
long U sound!
