Dear 5th Grade Band Parents and Students,
Welcome! This promises to be a great year of growth and musical achievement for the 5th Grade Band! I
eagerly anticipate working with all of you during the school year and have put together this handbook clearly
defining elements of the Beginning Band Program.
Band is an elective subject, which offers an opportunity for personal growth and enrichment through the study
of a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. The program is structured to provide young people with
motivation, positive attitudes, and commitment to success in an atmosphere of discovery and learning through
music. It is a place where students are part of a team that promotes musical, social, and academic growth.
Children do not have to be “gifted” to succeed in the program; anyone willing to learn and work hard will
succeed. The program emphasizes dedication, hard work, perseverance, and teamwork; these qualities are the
foundations of any meaningful endeavor. The basics of music covered in sectional classes will include note
reading, musical vocabulary, performance techniques, effective practice habits and much more. These basic
concepts NEED YOUR PARENTAL SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT. Band includes not only the
weekly sectional class and rehearsal, but also the time spent at home practicing. Encourage your children even
if progress seems slow at times. Parent involvement is significant in the success of your child and the program.
Parents get involved in many ways: parental encouragement of daily practice, chaperones for various band
events, volunteers for concert assistance, etc. With all of us working together, myself, parents, teachers, and
students, I know we can give the students a wonderful experience allowing Lake Zurich’s band program to
thrive and succeed!
It is very important that you plan now to avoid any future conflicts with our performances and rehearsals.
Please give special attention to the calendar in this packet! Every student is important to the success of our
band, and we must have each member present.
Thank you for your continued support of music education in Lake Zurich. I am looking forward to a productive
and enjoyable year. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at any time.
Sincerely,
Mr. Matt Kutylo

First Instrument Class – “Welcome to Your Instrument” Night
Students will begin sectional classes next week, but without their instruments for the first 2 classes. During
these classes we will have many areas to discuss and learn which will be helpful prior to receiving their
instrument. The first instrument class will be for parent(s) or guardian(s) to attend in the evening of September
8, 9, or 10. The date you attend depends on what instrument your child will be playing. This initial lesson is
very important to get students off on the right track being successful musicians in the future. This class will
introduce and review all fundamental concepts to be applied in making the proper tone, posture/hand placement,
breathing, technique, articulation, and instrument assembly. Having a parent present will help reinforce these
basic concepts at home. We will also have some high school band students to assist the students that evening.
This will be an experience where the parent(s) can share the joy of their child receiving the instrument and
starting a new venture in band.
The first instrument class schedule is the following:
Tuesday, September 8 – May Whitney Gym
5:00 – Oboes (band room)
6:00 – Flutes
7:30 – Saxophones
Wednesday, September 9 – May Whitney Gym
5:00 – French Horns/Trumpets (Trumpets in gym/French Horns in band room)
6:30 – Baritones (Band Room)
7:30 – Trombones (TBA)
Thursday, September 10 – May Whitney Gym
5:00 – Clarinets (Gym)
7:00 – Percussion (band room)
There will be signs to direct you where to go once you enter the building. You will be notified if there are any
changes in these dates or times. We encourage you to come with your child alone if possible to help in the
process of your child’s first instrument class.
Remember students are asked to bring a 3 ring binder just for band class (2-pocket inserts for their
book), dividers, and a pencil for their first class this week at school. Students will receive their method
book when they receive their instrument.
Dismissal Criteria/Discipline Plan
No successful organization can function properly without well-disciplined participants. Band is not a
mandatory subject and it is assumed that all students are willing participants. However, once students join the
band program, they are expected to adhere to all the standards and expectations outlined in this handbook.
Actions of one member reflect upon the reputation of all members, therefore, inappropriate behavior will be
grounds for consequences. Band students are subject to the same behavioral rules as outlined in the student
handbook.
It is important for all students to have a successful learning experience with their instrument. In order for this to
occur, they need support, put forth effort, have a positive attitude, and be patient. All students and parents
need to sign a commitment contract prior to entering the band program. This contract enforces the
student to remain in the program the entire first year.
Criteria for Dismissal



The parent of student submits a written request for dismissal from the program. The request must be
addressed to Mr. Kutylo, dated, and signed by the parent. The student will also need to fill out an exit
interview form. This is to gain some insight on why the student is dropping and obtain feedback from the
student regarding their experience in the program.
The student demonstrates inappropriate behavior and/or the inability to follow classroom and school
guidelines.
The student is consistently “unprepared” for class. “Unprepared” includes, but is not limited to one or more
of the following:
 The student attends class WITHOUT their instrument and/or their book.
 Student is consistently tardy for or forgets to attend class.
 Student comes to class consistently without practicing their music assignments.
Procedure for Dismissal Related to Criteria 2 & 3
1) Verbal Warning
2) Phone Call Home
3) School conference with teacher, parents, student, and principal
4) Dismissal from the program
5th Grade Group Sectional Classes
 “Pull-out” program: students leave their regular classroom to go to band
 30 minute class each week with like instruments
 Schedule follows a rotation so that the student will not miss the same subject every week (I will speak with
classroom teachers if a change needs to be made)
 Students will receive a sectional class schedule the first week of school
 Students study and learn performance (individual) skills, ensemble (group) skills, discipline (responsibility) skills,
and musical (expressive) skills
Expectations of Sectional Classes
 A band student is responsible for all material/work they miss while out of class for band
 When a student needs to leave to attend sectional class, they need to leave quietly
 A student needs to re-enter class quietly and quickly after the sectional is over
 A student is responsible for looking at the sectional schedule at the start of the day to make sure they are
present and on time. A student should leave 2-3 minutes before the sectional class begins and return to their
classroom 2-3 minutes following the band sectional.
 A student is expected to attend all sectional classes, rehearsals, and concerts as a part of their evaluation unless
written excuse from parent
 Parents need to give their support and assistance to make sure the band student is keeping up with all classroom
assignments
Full Band Rehearsals
 Full band rehearsals take place on Tuesday mornings in the Spencer Loomis Gym from 7:00-8:00 am.
beginning on September, 29, 2015 (Students who attend Seth Paine will be bused to their home school
following rehearsal)
 Students are encouraged to arrive at morning rehearsals before 7:00 a.m. in order to locate their seat, assemble
their instrument, and warm-up properly
 Students must bring their own folding stand to morning rehearsals (please have their name on the stand)
 Attendance is taken weekly; the only excused absences are illness or other emergencies notified by the parent
 Students are not to blast or play any other instrument but their own
Concerts
 There will be a Demonstration Concert on December 9, 2015 and a Spring Concert on May 10, 2016. Both
performances will be held at Middle School North in the Cafetorium beginning at 7 pm
 There will be a dress rehearsal after school a before our 2 beginning band concerts, date TBA, and
attendance mandatory.
 These concerts are considered final projects. Anyone who does not participate will be documented unsatisfactory
for the trimester. The only excused absences are illness or other emergencies notified by the parent. I must
receive a written notice signed by a parent, email, or voicemail in advance in order to excuse the absence.
 The Band Festival is district wide on Tuesday, April 12 and will be held at the high school. Students will
rehearse with the guest clinician in the afternoon and parents will arrive for the performance at 7 pm.
Further information will be given at a later date!
Concert Apparel
 Band shirt, black dress pants, dark socks, black dress shoes (no gym shoes, no skirts, no shorts)
Required Materials for Everyone
 Tradition of Excellence Book 1 (plus DVD/CDROM included)
 3 ring binder (with pocket inserts on each side for their books – just for band)
 Dividers
 Pencils (please keep in binder or case at all times)
 Instrument
 Music stand with name on it/with case for home practice, rehearsals, and concerts
Woodwinds
 All clarinets and saxophones must have at least 4 good, playable reeds at any given time, cork grease,
handkerchief swab (for cleaning), and a reed guard (for reed protection)
 Oboe students should have 2 playable reeds (medium soft) at all times, oboe reed guard, and silk swab
(for cleaning)
Brass
 All brass students must have valve oil (except trombones who apply slide cream) and slide grease.
 Trombones also have a cleaning rod with cheesecloth.
Percussion
 Must have their own sticks and mallets LABELED with their names
All the instrument materials listed above will be included in the instrument rental from
Music & Arts. If you rented elsewhere or have your own instrument you will need these accessories as well.
Home Practice and Parental Support
 Critical to the band student’s success
 Encourage your child through positive support and share an interest in this new journey
 Listen to practice sessions as much as possible, have them teach you what they learn
 Help select a regular “practice time” with a regular quiet place to practice
 Do not let poor planning, laziness, or television watching get in the way of practice
 The goal is to have the student practice 20-25 minutes a day, 5-6 days a week
 Most efficient practice is done daily for a shorter time, rather than to cram the day before
 Mark when lessons are on the family calendar
 Attend your child’s band concerts
 Weekly Practice Records with objectives in terms of what to practice will be sent home to record
minutes practiced and need to be signed by the parent before the next lesson
 Everyone will require a great deal of patience while the beginning musician squeaks, squawks, moans,
and groans their way through the initial stages of learning their instrument. It will get better! With
consistent practice, those squeaks and squawks will be replaced by the sweet sounds of music! The
rewards are well worth the wait.
 Confer with me if you have any questions or concerns

Trimester Report Cards



Students will receive a band report card at the end of each trimester
Students are given “excels,” “satisfactory,” or “needs improvement,” on the report card
The following information lists and explains areas to be evaluated on the band report cards:
1. Tempo - Students able to maintain a steady beat in music
2. Technique/Sticking - Technique is the mechanical skill necessary to master an instrument;
the complete coordination of all body movements. The percussionist must use proper hand
position.
3. Notation - Student should know musical symbols, proper note names, and positions.
4. Tone - To produce a good tone, the wind player must use a correct embouchure and plenty of
air. Student should produce strong, pleasant, and characteristic sound on their instrument.
5. Rhythm - Student should play notes and rests at the proper time and for the proper duration.
6. Articulation - Proper use of the tongue for wind players will produce a sound that is clear,
defined, and precise.
7. Posture - Good posture is essential; stand or sit up straight while holding their instrument
properly.
8. Practice & Effort - Students should practice all assigned objectives per week. It also
includes the student’s focus/achievement in sectional classes, rehearsals, and home practice.
9. Quizzes/Tests/Written Assignments - Student’s ability to retain knowledge of material in
class and workbook. A few short quizzes will be given and assignments in theory handouts.
10. Attitude/Organization - A student’s courtesy and attendance reflect their attitude. A
student should be on time for each class, well prepared, and with a well maintained
instrument.
11. Performance Ability - Student’s ability to perform concerts, smaller performances, and
playing tests.
12. Attendance – Student’s ability to be present for class, rehearsals, and concerts.
Extra Credit Opportunities
 Attending more than one pre-approved music performance (attending one is required)
 Receiving private lessons
 Checking out musical websites along with a brief review summary
 Sharing a recording if their instrument in sectional class
 Completing various handouts passed out in class/full band
Additional extra credit opportunities will be announced throughout the year.
Private Lessons
 Not required, but highly recommended especially when just starting an instrument
 Provide students with one-on-one instruction
 Build skills taught in weekly sectional class and increase their technical proficiency and confidence
 Students who are behind can reinforce the fundamentals they have been taught in class
 Advanced students can learn new concepts and improve all aspects of their playing
 Below is a list of Lake Zurich private lesson teachers. When you contact them, they will arrange lessons

Instrument Care/Supplies/Fees
Each rented instrument will come with all needed playing materials. We are planning at the first group lesson
to show students how to assemble and care for the instrument properly. Please stress to your child to treat the
instrument with care - it may well become yours. We will have consumable supplies (reeds, valve oil, etc.)
available for student purchase throughout the year. However, you must PREPAY in order to receive materials.
All students MUST own a music stand and case labeled with the student’s name. The school has stands for
usage of sectional classes, but STUDENTS MUST BRING A STAND TO THE WEEKLY FULL BAND
REHEARSALS AND CONCERTS. If an instrument needs repair, inform me as soon as possible. The Music
& Arts sends a representative weekly to pick up instruments from school and returns them when repairs are
completed. A loaner instrument is provided for the student during this time.
Extra Activities
In addition to scheduled performances, the program also offers a variety of activities as a reward for students’
efforts and accomplishments throughout the year. Award certificates will also be issued at the end of the year
for various achievements. At the end of the year band students will have a pizza party, skating party, and a
water park trip. There will also be a cosmic bowling party held soon after our first concert. We will even have
a movie night or other new activities incorporated throughout the year. Stay tuned for details on these activities
throughout the school year.
CONSISTENT EFFORT AND A POSITIVE ATTITUDE WILL HELP YOUR CHILD HAVE A GREAT
EXPERIENCE MAKING MUSIC!
Thank you in advance for the opportunity to work with your child in this new exciting venture.
