If you are experiencing difficulties in a course, your course teacher and the Guidance Department at Iona are here to provide some options for extra help. Peer tutoring is a voluntary in-school service that is organized by the counsellors in Guidance, as well as classroom teachers. Peer tutors can be senior Iona students who have shown academic excellence in an area of study, as well as dedication, commitment and an interest in helping others. In some cases, a peer tutor will be a fellow student from your class. Your subject teachers may link together students in the same course. *Ask your teacher if you are interested in receiving help from a peer OR in helping others in your class. “EXTRA HELP” - available in your class or subject area Ask your course teacher when extra help is available. Subject teachers usually identify when and where they are available for extra help. Some teachers will also pair students in a class as part of an informal buddy system. The Math department offers extra help1st Semester during the Tuesday lunch period and Wednesday after school for grade 9 – 10 students. Free math tutoring is “Tutee” - A “tutee” is a student who has identified themselves as in need of extra help. Sometimes teachers recommend that students receive additional support or recommended referred by their teacher may have additional support. Students who are in need of assistance in a specific subject area, are matched with a senior student who has volunteered to be a tutor before or after school. Building trust through confidentiality is a necessary requirement. The students volunteers earn community service hours for their help. *Note that the number of volunteers varies by semester and by subject area. Time Commitment - Tutoring sessions will take place outside of class time – in the morning,, during lunch and/or after school. The time agreed upon should be mutually decided upon by both the Tutee and the Tutor. Each session should be at least 30 minutes in length. To volunteer as a tutor, or to request a tutor, talk to your subject teacher or your Guidance Counsellor today! Benefits As a tutor, you gain excellent experience with helping others. Tutoring (teaching) also affords you the opportunity to consolidate your own learning. Tutoring can be applied towards your mandatory forty hours of community service – for your diploma. Tutoring experience is a great addition to your Resume. As a tutee, you get exceptional assistance from your peers. Learning from your peers can provide a risk-free environment. Your peers may understand your challenges or they may have experienced the same difficulties that you have and have succeeded.
