Marc-Andre Campbell Fr. Joseph Alozie The Month of Remembrance November is the month of Remembrance. This time of year centres around two feast days. November 1st is the feast of All Saints, when we honour the Saints of our church. November 2nd is the feast of All Souls when on this day we spend time reflecting and remembering those who have passed away. VIRTUE OF THE MONTH: CONSCIENCE God helps us to choose to be good people. Conscience is the voice of God within us. Our conscience reminds us how to act towards other people and how to be good to others. Sometimes it is hard for us to do the right thing, but we must always remember that the right thing to do is not always the easy thing to do. At home, please reinforce that a person of conscience: Catholic School Council Chairs: Antonietta La Penna Regina Labog Web-site: www.dpcdsb.org/herb Chooses to do the right thing, even when it is hard For the latest board news and information, follow us on Twitter Takes time to think and pray before making decisions @DPCDSB Schools Knows that actions and decisions affect all those around us Thinks of others before themselves Remembrance Day During the month of November, let us remember those who so courageously gave their life for our freedom. Volunteer, get involved and Help Make A Difference! Pizza Lunch Days Thank you for supporting our Pizza Days. We thank all the families that have use and plan to continue to use the pre-payment order forms. We always have the need for volunteers to help distribute pizza on our Pizza Days. Please contact the office if you would like to or think you can help. We thank all of our dedicated volunteers that help us provide this service to our students. Safe Arrival Student safe arrival at school is our first priority. If your child is going to be absent, PLEASE call the school attendance line at 905-858-1171 and press 1. Leave the necessary information on the answering machine. This helps us to streamline the morning routine and ensure quickly that our students are safely at school or at home. Late arrivals must check in at the office before going to class. Late arrivals will be tracked and excessive late arrivals will be discussed with parents at an attendance meeting. Please ensure that your child arrives at school on time. Your cooperation in this matter is very much appreciated. Phone Calls The office often gets requests from students to make phone calls home to ask parents to bring forgotten items such as running shoes, textbooks or homework. We are reinforcing with students that it is their responsibility to bring all necessary items to school and to arrange in advance their out of school activities. Students will not be given permission to make such calls. Also, please make after school arrangements with your children prior to school. We make every attempt to minimize interruptions to classes. HEALTH AND SAFETY School Yard Safety Just a reminder that student supervision begins at 8:45; students must not be dropped off at the school before this time. Thank you for your understanding. Indoor Shoes The weather is beginning to change and we remind everyone of our school procedure, which encourages an extra pair of running shoes to be kept at school for indoor use. Not only does this promote good health and comfort, it helps keep the classroom floors dry and clean, for everyone’s benefit. Criminal Reference Check A Criminal Reference Check is required if you wish to volunteer your services in the school, transport students and assist on trips. Criminal Reference forms are available in the office. The search results will be mailed to you approximately 4 weeks later. A reminder to those who already have a valid Criminal Reference Check that an annual declaration is required for all valid Criminal Reference Checks that are on file in the school office. All these forms are available for you at the office. Sports at St. Herbert School Junior Boys and Girls Volleyball Congratulations to the Junior Girls and Boys on a successful volleyball season. Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child provides an opportunity for people of all ages to be involved in a simple, hands-on project of Samaritan's Purse that focuses on the true meaning of Christmas - Jesus Christ - God's greatest gift. How it works: Shoeboxes are filled with hygiene items, school supplies, and toys, and is given to children regardless of gender, race, or religion around the world. History: Operation Christmas Child was started in 1990. In 1993, Operation Christmas Child grew and was adopted by Samaritan's Purse, a Christian organization run by Franklin Graham. To date, Operation Christmas Child has collected and distributed over 100 million shoebox gifts worldwide. In 2014, Canadians donated more than 700,474 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes for hurting children around the world. We look forward to participating in this worthwhile social justice initiative. Progress Reports Progress Reports, will be going home on November 17, 2015. The Progress Report provides initial information, early in the school year, about a student’s progress. It is designed to show a student’s development of learning skills and work habits, as well as a student’s general progress in working towards the achievement of curriculum expectations. Please be aware, the Progress Report is not a formal Report Card. Students will not be receiving letter grades indicating achievement of overall expectations. As a result, an interview with parents is not mandatory during the Progress Report period. If your child does not appear to be experiencing challenges with the curriculum and/or the teacher does not have any concerns, the teacher will not be requesting an interview at this time. All parents are invited to an interview in February, at the release of the Term 1 Report Card. The EcoSchools St. Herbert continues to be a more eco-friendly school this year. We ask parents to consider providing a litterless lunch for their children when possible. This means using reusable containers and not using plastic wrap, Ziploc bags and tinfoil. Also, using reusable containers for drinks and instead of a tetra box, will reduce waste. Thank you for helping St. Herbert School maintain it’s eco certified status. Electronic Distribution of Newsletters Parents, if you haven’t done so already, please provide a preferred email address to the office, to aid in the electronic distribution of newsletters in the near future. We are making the move away hard copy distribution of our monthly newsletters to not only cut down on costs but to also do our part in continuing to be an ecofriendly school. Please advise the office if you do not have computer access at home. A limited amount of hard copy newsletters will still be available for pick up at the office once we make the move to full electronic distribution. Milk Bags for Mats Please continue to bring in milk bags for our Milk Bags for Mats initiative. Mrs. Rampersad is working with our students to create milk bag mats which offer people without beds, an invaluable, durable and washable alternative to sleeping on the often cold and damp ground. It takes approximately 400 milk bags to make an adult sized mat. So please continue to send your bags in. Dates to Remember Nov. 10 - Photo Retake Day. Nov. 11 - Remembrance Day.
