Dear Parents, A very busy week in Room 20!!!!!!! Reading: We took the fiction assessment in class this week. The students read two fiction stories, answered multiple choice questions and a constructed response question including text support. As you all know, they have started reading their biography book. You should have received a yellow sheet explaining the entire biography project. ALL the writing will be completed in class except the final essay written in cursive. I explained to the class that they should be creative when decorating their can at home to look like their person. The lid on the can should still be able to be removed after decorating. They will be keeping their notecards in their cans. The class has completed two Literacy PARCC tests!!!! (By end of today). Math: Everyone is making good progress in their small math groups. I am working with every group daily – I instruct them on a given lesson and then they practice in their groups. The next day when they return we go over what they learned the previous day and then they learn another new concept. As a whole class we continue to go over PARCC practice problems. They have been solving the problems in their spirals as I go over each problem with them. Spelling: Your child received a new spelling list this week. They are completing activities and sorts in class as well as specific homework assignments. They will be tested on these spelling words next Friday, April 15th. Writing: We have been practicing answering constructed responses using the R.A.C.E. model. They all know this very well! R – Restate the question, A – Answer the question, C – Cite evidence from the text (text support), and E – Explain! ( We continue to work on the “Explain” part of the model!) They took a cursive writing assessment today and most will be expected to write their spelling test in cursive starting next week. Science: The class is enjoying our unit in “Life Science”. You should be seeing the book come home as they reread lessons and answers a few questions about what we learned that day. I will be explaining a “Poster Project” to your child soon. This project will be done in class on their choice of an animal/habitat. Details will come near the end of the month. Social Emotional Learning: We have been reviewing all concepts we have learned and talking about how we are using these in our daily experiences at school and home. Our discussions have been amazing! NOTE: There is NO 3rd grade Music Program on April 19th as stated on the district calendar. Enjoy your weekend!!!! Important Dates: April 11th – PTO meeting at SA library April 29th – Variety Show
