Third Grade Update

September 4, 2015

Mrs. Demeas, Third Grade kate.demeas@lz95.org

May Whitney Wildcats!

We had a fantastic turn out for Tuesday evening ’s Parent

Curriculum Night. I hope you found it informative and helpful, yet please do not hesitate to contact me with questions, concerns, or clarifications needed throughout the year ahead.

Here is a look at what we ’ve been doing in school:

Reading- Building good reading habits by thinking about what we know and what we want to know about a topic. Monitoring when meaning breaks down while reading. How to attack words we are not familiar with.

We also are continuing with our read aloud of The Tale of

Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo.

Your child is expected to read 20 or more minutes each day.

Math- This week we worked with rounding numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. We focus heavily on using a number line to help visualize number values. We also began reviewing the concept of multiplication and multiplying by 10.

I sent home the XtraMath log in instructions yesterday. If you had an account last year, it should link your child to me. A few minutes each day on this program will be extremely beneficial to your child!

Social Studies- During our introduction to map skills we ’ve reviewed a compass rose with primary and intermediate directions, the 7 continents and 4 oceans, and practiced using symbols to help read maps.

Writing- We are continuing to learn cursive letters that begin with the “magic c.” This includes, so far, c, a, and d.

We are setting up our Writer ’s Workshop, too, by starting to gather ideas about the types of things we can write, and will be building our brainstorming and inspiration lists next week!

We

’ve even read some inspirational books as well, like Library

Mouse!

Please let me know if you have any trouble getting into

ClassDojo. Some of the new monsters I ’ve seen are just great!
