In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae, May 1915
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
St. Christopher’s

We continue to pursue academic excellence for all
students and we provide opportunities in every
classroom for students to attain their personal best.
November is a month that is particularly important
to us as we celebrate All Saints Day, All Souls Day
and Remembrance Day. We come together as a
Catholic Community to celebrate and show respect
for those men and women who sacrificed their lives
for our freedom. Please support the Royal Canadian
Legion by buying a poppy at the front office. We
continue to pray for world peace. The feast of All
Saints is a reminder to praise the men and women of
faith who courageously lived the teachings of Jesus,
and guide and inspire us in our faith daily.
November is shaping up to be a busy month. Please
check out the “Upcoming Dates” included in this
Newsletter.

November has arrived, and seemingly very quickly!
October was filled with many activities. Thank-you
for your generosity in supporting our Thanksgiving
food drive. I enjoy seeing the liturgy and entertainment put on by the host classes each month at our
assemblies. Thank you to Miss. Caruso for hosting
the assembly last month on empathy. Thank-you to
all the parents who attend our assemblies. Our next
assembly will be for Remembrance Day on Wednesday, November 11th at 10:45 am. We welcome all
parents and caregivers to this special event.
God Bless,
Connie Gale

Breakfast With Santa
Please mark Saturday, November 28th
on your calendars as our School Council
will be holding our annual “Breakfast
with Santa” from 9:00-11:00 a.m. here at
the school. Breakfast will be pancakes, fruit and yogurt
and we are also expecting a visit from Santa. There will
be a photographer here to offer the opportunity for your
child/ren to have their picture taken with Santa. We
hope that it will be an enjoyable family event and request that children be accompanied by an adult. Order
forms will be sent home with the students. Please note
that only one meal package is required for all your children to be photographed with Santa.

Halloween Candy Drive—Dr. Simone
Parent Drivers
St. Helen’s Youth Faith Ambassadors are organizing a Halloween Candy Drive by collecting treats in
the front foyer beginning Monday, November 2nd
through to Monday, November 16th. Please be
generous and bring some of your candy "loot" to
school (no chocolate please as it will melt). All the
candy that is collected will be taken to Dr. Simone's
Warehouse. It will be shipped around the world,
free of charge, to the poor children.
We would like to take this time to thank all our parent volunteer drivers. Without your help we would
not be able to participate in many events. It is
through your efforts that we continue to be able to
offer extracurricular events to the students. Please
remember that we now require a Volunteer Police
Record Check to be submitted to the school for all
volunteers. Forms can be picked up from the main
office.

Virtue Corner
NOVEMBER ~ CONSCIENCE
This month we will celebrate the virtue of CONSCIENCE.
A person with conscience…

Chooses to do the ‘right thing’ and feels
good about it
 Can see how his/her wrong-doing affects
others and feels badly
 Says ‘sorry’ and tries to make up for mistakes
God has given us the ability to know the right and decent
way to act and then to act that way. We trust that the
common Spirit we share inspires us and guides us to
make good decisions if we allow our conscience to be
well-formed.
A person of conscience allows prayer and scripture to
influence him/her.

Reminders and Resources: Cold and Flu Season
As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel
Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant
in ensuring that our schools are clean and that our
school communities are educated regarding good hand
hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of
colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to
review cold and flu prevention with students and
staff. Many resources are utilized from our regional
health units.
A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can
be contracted in public places throughout the year. For
example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are
transferred from person to person through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December
through February, but can start as early as October.
Regional Health Unit Resources
Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as
outlined in the various Peel Health and Wellington Dufferin Guelph (WDG) resources available to you through
their websites. As always, children who are unwell,
should be kept at home.
Flu Clinics
Also available on the Peel Health and WDG websites,
are the schedules of local Flu Clinics.

Bus Cancellations/School Closing
During the winter months inclement weather may cause
disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation
and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 am
and will be announced on the local and TV and radio
stations.
Clothing in Cold Weather
Children will go outside for recess and lunch hour,
weather permitting. On extremely cold days we limit
the amount of time students spend outdoors. During
morning announcements, we remind students to wear
all winter clothes. Children should come to school with
boots, winter coats, scarves, hats and mittens. As well,
in order to keep their workplace clean, please ensure
your child has a pair of “hard-soled indoor” shoes,
slippers are not recommend-ed due to possibility of
immediate evacuation . It will r educe the amount of
dirt and mud brought in-doors. This will also assist our
custodial staff in keeping our school clean. Thanks for
your continued cooperation.
Student Absences/Lates
Please use our 24 hour answering service to inform the
school of late or absent students. We must hear from a
parent or guardian if a student will be absent,
arriving late or leaving early. Phone 905-822-4564
If a pattern of unexcused lateness or absents
becomes apparent, parents will be contacted by
the school.
