In closing, on behalf of the entire school community, thank you
for making our school a caring and supportive environment.
Have a safe, restful and healthy summer. Classes will resume on
September 8th, 2009. God bless you all.
.
FAREWELL AND THANK YOU
We need to make a special acknowledgement to those staff
members who will be leaving us at the end of the school year.
Their dedication and inexhaustible contributions have helped
make Sacred Heart School a good place to learn and have fun.
REPORT CARDS
Third term report cards will be sent home Tuesday, June 23,
2009. Because grade level placements are still tentative, only
next year’s grade level will appear on the report card. Reorganization may be a possibility at the beginning of the school
year. Split classes are a reality in all schools in Ontario and
Sacred Heart is no exception. Please be aware that any
reorganization decisions are made with the needs of the children
in mind and are guided by the Ministry of Education’s
parameters around class size.
LOST AND FOUND
Our Lost and Found box is full. Please encourage your child to
visit and claim any lost articles. Any unclaimed articles will be
sent to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
COLLECTING ALL BOOKS
June is the month when we request that all library materials
loaned to students are returned. Most students are very
cooperative and return items on time and in the same condition in
which they received them. We will be notifying parents if their
children have missing books. Students are aware that they are
responsible for paying for any lost, missing or damaged books.
Similarly, textbooks are school property and are “loaned”
annually to students. The expectation is that textbooks will be
returned at the end of the school year. Please remind your child
to search in his/her room for any school texts and return them as
soon as possible. Textbooks are expensive to replace and, again,
parents may be held responsible for lost or damaged materials.
VOLUNTEER SOCIAL
Sacred Heart’s annual Volunteer Breakfast will take place on
Friday, June 5th . Your support and help in every way, big or
small, is truly appreciated!
SEPTEMBER 2009 START-UP
Students will be returning to school on Tuesday, September
8th, 2009. Grades 1-8 are asked to assemble in the school yard
(by 8:45 a.m.). Teachers will have posters indicating their grade
and room number. At this time, staff will have finalized class
lists and they will organize students accordingly. Due to the
Freedom Of Information Act, class lists will not be posted.
• JK children do not attend school until mid September.
Parents will be contacted by their child’s teacher
regarding a pre-meeting and to establish their child’s
specific start date.
• SK students will assemble in the Kindergarten yard
prior to the 8:45 bell and the 12:45 bell. The
Kindergarten teacher will gather the children into the
classroom.
• Rainy day procedures will be posted prior to the first
day of school.
CRIMINAL REFERENCE CHECKS
In keeping with the Safe Schools Act, all volunteers must have a
Criminal Reference Check. If you are planning to volunteer for
school trips, fundraising, or dealing with children in any capacity
e.g. All Star Reading, Library and in classrooms, please obtain a
criminal reference check form from the office and deliver it to
Peel Regional Police Headquarters, 7750 Hurontario Street
Brampton, Ontario. The C.R.C. is free for all volunteers. To
avoid disappointment in September, we encourage you to fill out
the form over the summer.
We value all of our volunteers and we encourage you to continue
to take part in our school community. Once the application has
been received, please submit it to the Principal.
E.Q.A.O.
Congratulations to the Grades 3 and 6 students for successfully
completing the assessment. More information regarding
individual student reports will be available in the Fall.
LUNCHROOM SUPERVISORS
A very special thank you to our lunchroom supervisors, Mrs.
Gresham, Mrs. James and Mrs. Linda. They have been
consistently here over the lunch hour to supervise students inside
and outside the school, in every type of weather. We are grateful
for their dedication in watching over our students.
SCHOOL AGENDAS
We are ordering Premier school agendas again next year.
Organizational skills, time management and homework
completion are essential components of the learning skills in the
Ontario curriculum and will be supported by the use of the
agenda. Agendas will be available in September and we thank
the School council for agreeing to purchase them once again.
PLAYDAY
Playday for the whole school will take place on June 12th. As
students will be outside for an extended period of time, please
ensure your child(ren) wear a hat, have applied sunscreen at
home and are dressed appropriately. Our School Council are
generously providing an ice cream treat and pizza lunch for all
students and staff.
PEACE TREE DAY
On June 1, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and
the Harmony Movement celebrated Peace Tree Day at St.
Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Brampton. Peace Tree
Day is a festival that celebrates the beauty of our cultures through
the spirit of children.
“The festival inspires young people to take pride in their heritage
and share it with their peers,” said Cheuk Kwan, executive
director of Harmony Movement. “It encourages children, their
families and schools to gain a greater understanding, respect and
appreciation for people of all cultures and faiths.”
Over 300 Brampton elementary students were in attendance at
the event which was run by Dufferin-Peel’s student Harmony
Movement Leaders. Participants shared activities, performances
and food from around the world, to raise awareness about peace
and understanding among people of all cultures and faiths. Funds
raised from the festival will be donated to War Child Canada.
Peace Tree Day celebrations are held across York Region; in the
cities of Windsor, Hamilton and Toronto; in the province of
Prince Edward Island; as well as in India. This event at St.
Thomas Aquinas Secondary School was the first in the City of
Brampton. Mayor Susan Fennell was in attendance. Nine
students from Sacred Heart took part – Natasha S., Rachelle L.,
Hannah C., Dylan C., Stephanie K., Alexandra R., Tamika D.,
Jade R., and Julieann D.

REGION OF PEELS’ HEAT ALERT – HOW IT WORKS
The Region of Peel may issue a heat alert when the weather
suggests a risk to human health.
The Health Department has developed a heat alert system that is
specific to Peels’ three municipalities – Mississauga, Brampton
and Caledon. The custom-made system was developed based on
specific meteorology, as well as urban structure and
demographics of the region. This system is based on research
that assessed how weather conditions and extreme heat have
affected the health of Peel residents in the past.
Peel’s system is specific to the municipalities because Peel is
geographically large and diverse, with a mix of urban and rural
areas. The research indicated significant differences in how
different weather conditions affect Mississauga and
Brampton/Caledon.
When there is a risk to the public’s health, an alert or an extreme
alert, may be called. An alert and an extreme alert are both
health risks, but more proactive actions are recommended when
an extreme alert is in effect. For example, during an alert,
outdoor exercise should be limited to early or late in the day and
during an extreme alert, exercising outdoors is not recommended.
The public and agencies serving the public are advised to refer to
the safety guidelines for what they can do to protect health during
extreme heat episodes.
The alert advisory is updated daily and information during
business hours and after hours information can be found on
Peel’s website at www.hotweatherinpeel.ca or by calling Peel
Public Health at 905-799-7700.

WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR CHILD TO BECOME
CATHOLIC?
St. Leonard’s Church has an annual program for children in
grades 2-8 who are not baptized or have been baptized in a nonCatholic church, beginning in September. This program will lead
to the baptism of the children or their reception into the Catholic
church. Parents who would like to have their child enrolled in
this program or would like to know more about the process, are
asked to pick up a package from the priest after any weekend
Mass. We are now accepting applications for the September
program. One of the parents will be required to provide a copy
of their Roman Catholic baptism certificate. Please note that
only children, who have been baptized Catholic, are able to
receive the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and
Confirmation.
