“OPENING DOORS OF MERCY”
May 2 — May 8, 2016
Grade 7 & 8 Confirmation
Ms. De Buono and Mr. Couto would like to acknowledge the hard work
and dedication shown by the Grade 7 and 8 students of Sacred Heart,
in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. These students exhibited all of
the qualities of true Catholic leadership, and will continue to grow in Christ now
that they have received His gift of the Holy Spirit. Ms. De Buono and Mr. Couto
would also like to thank the parents, sponsors, and staff for continuing
to support the Confirmandi on their spiritual journey, as well as Father John and
the staff of St. Leonard’s Parish for organizing a beautiful ceremony. Finally, the
teachers would like to acknowledge their appreciation of the loving support shown
by all members of the Sacred Heart community, under whose direction and wisdom
these intermediate students continue to grow in both their education and faith
alike.

God of Love and compassion,

Creating the Conditions
For Learning: Mathematical Processes
Let mercy guide our living
and bring us closer to the
heart of the gospel.
As part of our Brampton North East FIT Goal, the
staff at Sacred Heart and St. Stephen have gathered
twice this year to inquire more about creating
conditions in the classroom to support the
development of the Mathematical processes.
May we live as Jesus with
mercy that welcomes,
loves, forgives and
calls us to live the gospel
joyfully.
Through a co-learning stance, our Special Assignment Teacher, Steven Quartarone,
and educators from similar divisions have come together to cultivate a better
understanding of the mathematical processes. By using them intentionally, making
them explicit to students, and sharing our classroom experiences, we have come to
learn that this important and necessary process is essential in fostering both
teacher and student efficacy.
In both sessions, educators have explored ways to use technology, a variety of
manipulatives and other resources and best practices to help engage students, as
well as draw out the highlighted processes we have been discussing.
In our faith-filled community, collaborating between schools truly reflects the
e ssence of our Catholic Board Learning Plan and our Ontario Catholic Graduate
Expectations. As reflective practitioners, we continue our lifelong learning journey
in collaboration with others.
Amen.

Congratulations to Sacred Heart’s Dance Team,
“Rising from a Nightmare”, for receiving platinum at the
11th Annual Dufferin-Peel Dance Competition held at the
Rose Theater on Tuesday, April 19th, 2016. Their hard
work and dedication to the team definitely paid off. The
name, “Rising from a Nightmare”, carries a special
message that corresponds with the two songs they
danced to; “Dance Without You” by Skylar Grey and “Brave” by Sara Bareilles. The
message the dance and title conveys is that, although at times you may feel alone
and be bullied for being different, be brave! As the dancers removed their dark
shirts that were covered with hurtful words and began to shout and spell “WE ARE
BRAVE” across the stage, the audience was reminded to embrace their uniqueness
and to stand up against bullies.
Thank you Sacred Heart Dance Team and Ms. De Buono for a great performance
and a powerful message.

During Earth Week the Eco Team organized a trivia game that
was related to the environmental issue of the day. Students were
given a question over the announcements in the morning and the
eco team collected the answers. There was a draw for each day
and winners won various items – basketball, reusable lunch
container, sunglasses, water bottles, skip it, and a baseball bat.
Monday was meatless Monday, we highlighted the fact that meat requires large
amounts of water to produce. Tuesday was Trashless Tuesday, students were
encouraged to bring a boomerang lunch. Wednesday was Walk to School
Wednesday, our eco team was out taking photos of our walkers. Thursday was
Thirsty Thursday, students were encouraged to bring their refillable water bottles.
Friday was Light Free Friday, our school turned off as many lights as we could for
the entire day. Students were very enthusiastic and learned a lot about some key
environmental issues.
