Georges Vanier School Prayer
Lord, in the morning as we start this day,
We take a moment to bow and pray.
We start with thanks,
For all your kind and loving ways.
And now as we begin our day,
Watch over us as we work and play.
We ask you to help us respect and love one another,
And all we meet during the day.
Hold our families and school staff in your hands,
As we follow, in your
V commands.
Teach us to love you more than before,
Through random acts of love and kindness.
Guide us to be like Georges Vanier,
And make a difference by
Helping the poor, the needy, the sick and the homeless.
We ask this through Jesus, Our Lord.
Amen

DRESS FOR THE WEATHER
Now that colder weather is upon us, we respectfully remind you to ensure
that your children come to school dressed warmly to participate in recess activities.
When weather conditions are severe, we may reduce the outdoor playtime, or have indoor
recess entirely. Fresh air and exercise are vital components for successful learning, so we will
endeavour to have children play outside whenever possible. Help your children come to school
appropriately dressed with scarves, hats and mittens on those really chilly days!
For health and safety reasons and to help keep the school safe and clean, we ask all students to
have indoor shoes. Thank you for your support in this matter.
Regional Health Unit Resources
Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other
preventative measures, as outlined in the various Peel Health resources available to
you through their websites. As always, children who are unwell, should be kept at
home.

Congratulations to Chantel Brayall, crowned CWL Speech Champion! dance

“African-American Carter G. Woodson conceived th
idea of having a time set aside devoted to the
African, and African-American history that Blacks
were learning on their own. He chose the week in February
that contained the birthdates of two people he credited with
bringing about the end of American slavery, President
Abraham Lincoln and Black abolitionist, Frederick Douglass,
which he called Negro History Week in 1926. The celebration
expanded and over time became known as Black History
Month.
In Canada, this idea was first celebrated in Toronto by
railroad porters within the Black community by 1950; the
porters had learned of it on their travels in the United States.
The Canadian Negro Women’s Association also hosted a few
celebrations. It was not until the Ontario Black History Society
(OBHS) was founded in 1978, and petitioned the City of
Toronto by 1979 to have February proclaimed Black History
Month that the celebration started to trickle into the entire
community. The OBHS has successfully lobbied the federal
government to have February declared as Black History
Month. In December 1995, the Parliament of Canada officially
recognized February as Black History Month, following a
motion introduced by the first Black Canadian woman elected
to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine, MP of
Etobicoke-Lakeshore.” We celebrate this special month at
Vanier with student-led announcements and class
presentations highlighting black history in Canada and around
the world.
