Morta Visit our Website: http://www.dpcdsb.org/CGARN World Teachers’ Day October 5 is World Teachers’ Day and I would like to take the opportunity today, to recognize and celebrate our teachers for their commitment and dedication to Catholic education here at St. Charles Garnier School. Teachers have a great influence on us. They help prepare us for life. They teach us skills we need to participate and compete. They help us identify our strengths and weaknesses. They work to make us stronger students and hopefully, better people. Most of us can point to a teacher who has influenced us positively in some way. Thank you to all our teachers for all they do. Empathy: This month we will focus on the Virtue of Empathy. God has given us the ability to form connections with each other-to live together in safe caring inclusive communities. An empathetic person believes we all share one Spirit; that we are many parts of one body as we are all created in the likeness of God. An empathetic person is able to identify and feel other people’s concerns. Please talk with your child about the importance of Empathy. Terry Fox Walk: On Friday, September 26th, our school participated in our annual Terry Fox Walk. Students raised $1,800 toward cancer research. Well done students! Many thanks to Mrs. Giansante and Mrs. Sawh for organizing the day’s events. National Walk to School Day Pope Francis’ latest Encyclical on the environment invites us to be “Stewards of the Earth”. The National Walk to School Day on October 7th, 2015 provides us with an opportunity to reduce gas emisssions and answer out Catholic call to care for God’s creation. We encourage as many students as possible to walk to school on National Walk to School Day. Thanksgiving Food Drive We are in the process of collecting non perishable food items for our Annual Food Drive. Students are being encouraged through daily announcements to remember those who are less fortunate. All food items will be donated to Open Door at Square One. Our food drive will end on Tuesday October 13, 2015. Many thanks to Mrs. Eneh and her students for coordinating this effort. Lunch Time Parents are asked to make a commitment as to whether their child will stay at school for lunch or go home. On the rare occasion there is a change to this plan please come to the office to sign your child out. Should your child not be returning in the afternoon, please give the office a call to let them know, just as you do in the morning. From time to time students come to school with notes allowing them to go home for lunch. Please remember when a student is dismissed at lunch time the parent assumes responsibility for the child’s whereabouts and safety. Students will “sign back in” as the teacher takes afternoon attendance. As a student returns to the school yard area they must come promptly to the recess area. The Online Reporting Tool: The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School board has developed a new way to help nurture a safe, caring and inclusive school environment. The Online Reporting Tool is intended for students in grades 3 – 12 who become aware of bullying incidents and negative behaviours. The student can simply ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s website to fill out the report. The report will then be directly emailed to the principal and/or vice principal and will be dealt with accordingly. Brampton Beast Hockey The Brampton Beast Hockey team has invited the St. Charles Garnier Choir to sing the National Anthem at a hockey Game. The Beasts are the farm team for the Montreal Canadiens. The students singing will receive a complimentary ticket. Tickets for others wishing to attend are being discounted at 40% costing $16.00. Please join in the spirit. See attached sheet to place your order. Open House: Thank you to all students and parents who attended our Open House/Curriculum Night on September 21st. There was an excellent turn-out and your presence indicates your strong support and interest in your child’s education. It was great to meet so many of the parents. Student Safety: Your child’s safety is always a priority at St. Charles Garnier School. Together with the Peel Police, the board has developed a “hold and secure” procedure to keep schools safe during any potential serious incident. We have been practicing our Fire Drill and lockdown procedures with all staff and students. We have also practiced “Shelter in Place” to ensure safety in the event of a weather-related situation. Reorganization of Classes: Our schoolwide reorganization was completed on September 17th. Thank you so much to parents, students and staff for their co-operation in ensuring we had a smooth transition. Interruptions: Your child’s classroom is a very exciting and active place. Important learning activities are going on in there! Classroom interruptions, therefore, disturb your own child’s learning, the teacher who is striving to teach a lesson and that of everyone else in the class as well. With this in mind, we ask for your help by encouraging and helping your child arrive at school at least 5 to 10 minutes before 8:45a.m. Being punctual is a necessary requirement for all schools and places of business. Please assist your child in developing good life skills by ensuring that they arrive on time. Casual Fridays: You may have noticed the staff at St. Charles Garnier dress casually on Fridays. Teachers make donations to ShareLife charities and the United Way to participate in this initiative. The Rosary Circle Program: We are very pleased to once again have the Rosary Circle at our school for all grades. Each month, students have the opportunity to share in learning and reciting the Rosary. Our first Rosary Apostolate visit will take place on October 29th. We thank our community volunteers who provide the opportunity for our students. News from the Library: Mr. Vukosa would like to thank all those who helped make the St. Charles Garnier Library Book Fair a HUGE success. The Family Event/ Open House, held on Monday September 21, 2015 had many students and parents enjoying a fun filled time shopping for their favorite books! Your participation in this event has helped generate funds to purchase new books for the school library! Congratulations to Cristian R. from Mr. Marchant’s room for winning the Family Event Door prize. Special thanks to our Family Event volunteers from Mrs. Sappong’s class: Natalie F., Eula B., Alessandro B., Michael D., and Hannah M. Hope to see you again at the spring Book Fair! Pupil Accommodation Review Policy Public Consultation: The Ministry of Education released the new Pupil Accommodation Review Guideline (PARG) in March 2015. This guideline sets expectations for all school boards on managing and reviewing underutilized school space, including potential school closures, and for the greater coordination and sharing of planning related information between school boards and other community partners. The guideline requires all school boards in the province to develop or revise Pupil Accommodation Review Policies and to invite public input into the policy before it is finalized. A survey to collect feedback on the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board’s draft amended Policy 6.51 Pupil Accommodation Review will be available for review and comment on the Board’s website at www.dpcdsb.org until 4:30 pm on Friday, October 16, 2015. Supporting documents will also be available for reference and review. Please consider reviewing and providing input on this policy. Sts. We encourage our families to register with the parish, and to join us for Sunday mass at 7:45a.m., 9:00 a.m. (Italian), 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m. Neighbourhood Police Unit: Every school year, all schools are assigned two NPU officers. (Neighbourhood Police Unit). Our NPU officers have already been visible in the school, circulating informally and meeting with students. Their role is one of a preventative one; helping to promote positive relationships. They will also participate in some of our lockdown and fire drills.
