Dear Parents, What a great week of work! Students could not believe how fast the week went – which is always a good sign that they were working hard! The focus this week was on trying to prepare for the Wax Museum presentation – the room was filled with students working on tri-folds, and hovered over computers and iPads working on speeches. It was a wonderful sight!! While students will not be bringing home a Grade Report today, they will bring one home on Tuesday. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. Happy weekend! Mrs. Whiteman and Mrs. Martine IMPORTANT NEWS FOR THE WEEK: 6th GRADE CHOIR SIGN-UP - 5th Grade Parents and Students: Registration for CHOIR at MIDDLE SCHOOL NORTH is now open! Choir is an outstanding opportunity to have fun making great music and meeting new friends. At MSN, choir is a graded, year-long class that is substituted for a child’s homeroom class and meets five days a week. The ensemble performs approximately four concerts and takes field trips to locations around the Chicago area. Involvement in this activity provides students with an opportunity to meet new friends from the other elementary schools, join a group where they feel like an important member of the family, and to see what they can accomplish as a singer! To register, go to: http://www.lz95.org/classes/choirregistrationforincomingsixthgraders_jnelson/ and complete the form. Please e-mail the director Jeff Nelson at jeff.nelson@lz95.org if you have any questions. PARCC – Students completed the final round of the ELA and MATH PARRC tests this week! MAP TESTING – MAP testing will begin the second week of May! AMERICAN HERO WAX MUSEUM – This project consists of three parts – biography research, poster and speech. First, students have chosen to research an historically significant person this week. Students were to complete their research by Tuesday so that they could begin work on the next phases of the project. Second, the students will be creating a poster to visually represent his/her famous American. The students started working on their poster project on Monday. Finally, students will be “acting out” their chosen hero at a Wax Museum presentation on Thursday, May 5, although students have asked to bring in costumes and props by Tuesday so that they can practice. They will write a short speech, speaking in first person in order to introduce themselves to their audience. During the day, students from other classes will drop by to learn about the people the fifth graders researched. Then, that night, at Open House, you will have the chance to hear the students’ presentations! A big part of this project is dressing up to look like the person he/she researched. Please help your child find something that will adequately depict the American Hero that will be represented at the museum. We have asked students to look for ways to obtain a “costume” that will not be expensive. They can ask friends or neighbors to borrow a costume, or check the local thrift shop. They may also hold or bring props that reflect their hero’s accomplishment(s), but please remember that they must be school appropriate. The students have a yellow packet in their expandable folders describing criteria for success. Please let us know if you have questions. BOOK FAIR – (May 2-6) - In conjunction with Scholastic Book Fairs' All For Books charity, we are going to have “Change a Child’s World” (coin drive) the week of the book fair: Monday the kids can bring in pennies. Tuesday, nickels. Wednesday, dimes. Thursday, quarters. Each child that brings in money can write their name on a peace sign or heart and we will hang it on the book fair wall. The class will get to keep the money for the teacher to spend in the classroom during book fair and Scholastic will give an equal amount to buy books for children in need. The class that brings in the most money for the day gets to keep the coveted trophy! SUPPLIES? As the year progresses, students’ supplies are starting to dwindle. Please check with your child to see if they need more pencils, glue or replacement scissors. This is especially important as we work on interactive notebook activities when sharing supplies becomes time consuming! Thank you in advance!! GRAND EVENT Please join us for the Grand Event lunch in the Seth Paine gym. Your child can invite a special “Grand” person to have lunch in the gym and afterward browse the book fair. Your child and Grand will have to bring their own lunch. Have fun with it! The Grand can surprise them with a lunch from their favorite place or have your child pack lunch for themselves and their grand! As much as I am sure that your Grand would love to sample the cafeteria cuisine, they will not be permitted to get hot lunch from the cafeteria to bring back to the gym. When signing up please include your child’s name & grand who will be attending. Also, please select 2 in the Qty section to indicate 2 attending. Thank you!
