VIRTUES PROGRAM: EMPATHY Affirmation I understand other’s feelings and difficulties. I am able to share in the joy of others. I can sense the hurt around me. I care about who is in trouble or has made a mistake. I am a loyal and committed friend. Throughout the month of October we will focus on the virtue of empathy. An empathetic person listens attentively, notices and responds to others, can see a situation from another person’s point of view and knows that different people may feel differently about the same thing. As a Catholic community let us pray for the grace and strength to be people of empathy. The bell rings in the morning at 8:45 a.m. Parents are asked to ensure that their child will be at school before the beginning of classes in the morning and afternoon. Students arriving after the entrance bell, lose valuable organizational time at the beginning of each session. STUDENT LATENESS Students who are late must come to the office to sign in prior to going to their classroom. STUDENT SUPERVISION TIMES Please note that teachers are on supervision duty only 15 minutes before the start of the school day and 15 minutes at the end of the day. For safety reasons we ask that you not drop your child off at the school prior to 8:30 a.m., to please pick them up ON TIME at 3:15 p.m. BUS STUDENTS Respect private property while waiting for the bus Do not talk to the bus driver while the bus is in operation unless it is necessary For your safety, remain seated when on the bus DRESS CODE In keeping with the Board’s mission statement and Catholic School teachings, each school is committed to standards of neatness, cleanliness, modesty and good taste. Students are required to dress in a manner and attire appropriate for a school environment. Hats/headwear are acceptable for outside. Clothing must display appropriate and acceptable words and graphics. WATER IN THE YARD As we approach the rainy season, water is an inevitable feature of the schoolyard and presents an occasion for younger students to get wet socks and clothing. Our school approach is to contact parents to bring dry clothing. This is often inconvenient for parents. We suggest that you place an extra pair of socks and track pants in your child’s backpack in the event that a change of clothing is necessary. SNACKS AT SCHOOL SOCCER As part of our school effort and board policy to reduce the risk of life threatening allergies for our students and our commitment to keeping our schoolyard as clean as possible, we allow students to eat their snacks indoors. Students are given time to eat their snacks just prior to or just following each recess. In order to facilitate the timely co-ordination of snack time, we ask that students and parents remember to include snacks that can be eaten relatively tidy in a 10 minute or less time frame. We also strongly encourage healthy snacks and beverages to help promote healthy eating habits. Suggestions for healthy snacks: crackers and cheese, peanut free granola bars, cut up fruits or vegetables, juice, yogurt and water. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Congratulations to the girls' and boys’ soccer teams. Both teams displayed skill and sportsmanship before losing in their quarter final. Many thanks to your coaches, Mrs. Killman and Mr. Mowat for their time and dedication preparing you for the tournament. Go Sharks! LUNCH HOUR During the lunch hour, all students who stay for lunch are expected to remain at school, and all students who go home for lunch are expected to go home every day. If there is a change in the regular lunch hour procedure for your child, parent/guardians are asked to provide the teacher with a note explaining the change. TRAFFIC SAFETY CROSSING GUARD Our school driveway is a matter of great concern in regards to the safety of our students. Therefore, we are reminding you again to use the Kiss ‘n’ Ride lane to drop off or pick up your child. You cannot park your vehicle in the Kiss ‘n’ Ride lane before school or at dismissal time during the day. When using the Kiss ‘n’ Ride program to drop off or pick up students, please remember: Kindly assist us in reminding children to cross with the Crossing Guard at Leagate when coming to and going home from school. The Crossing Guard is on duty at 8:15-8:45 am and 3:15-3:45 pm. Thank you for your co -operation in looking out for the safety of all our students. Although not a communicable disease, pediculosis (head lice) is a concern to parents and teachers. Each year it is common for outbreaks of pediculosis to occur. Unfortunately, in recent years, head lice have become increasingly common throughout North America. They are parasites, which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are not connected in any way to dirt or neglect. Anyone can be infested with them. When a case of lice is found at school, we inform parents of the infected classes by way of a special letter. In order to control these pests we shall follow the procedures outlined below. We request your full co-operation. If a case is found in the school, we will inform all parents. We then request that you check your own child’s head. If you find them to also be infested, please contact us so that we may advise you on the proper treatment for them. This information can also be obtained from a pharmacist or the regional Health Department. Even if cases are not reported from the school, it is a wise precaution to check your child’s head periodically. Encourage your children not to put on other people’s hats or scarves, even when playing. Inform them not to use other people’s combs or hairbrushes. If your child does become infested with head lice, we will ask you to keep them out of school until after they have been treated with the correct shampoo and their hair is clear of both lice and nits (eggs). Your cooperation is an important part of the efforts being made to control the spread of pediculosis in our school. We clear the Kiss ‘N Ride usually in 10 minutes. Please be patient we are all BUSY but SAFETY comes first. The inside lane (closest to the school) is the only lane where cars can stop to drop off their children in the morning and pick up their children in the afternoon. Drivers should not be parking and leaving their vehicle to walk to the school to pick up their child. The outside lane is a drive thru lane. This means that there should be no stopping and/or loading or unloading of students. If your child is not at the Kiss ‘N Ride area at dismissal time, please park in one of the spaces available in the parking lot or circle around once more. Students are not permitted to cross the parking lot unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please do not walk your children through the two Kiss ‘N Ride lanes. This is very unsafe and drivers may not see you in time. Take the time to walk around the Kiss ‘N Ride lanes. There is no parking in the driveway. This is a fire zone and blocks the flow of traffic. FRONT DRIVEWAY The front of the school is for BUSES ONLY. CARS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO PARK, DROP OFF or PICK UP students in the driveway or bus lane located at the front of the school. When stopping your vehicle on the road in front of the school, please refrain from blocking the driveway so that designated Board personnel can access it when needed.
