SPECIAL AWARDS – GRADUATION CEREMONY Note: These awards are subject to change. Special Subject Grad Awards • Dramatic Arts Performance Award Most Outstanding Contribution to Extra-Curricular Productions The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have made the most outstanding contribution to extra-curricular dramatic events in the school (including plays, talent show, hosting events) throughout their high school career; and c) have successfully earned a minimum of one senior drama credit. • Business Studies Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have shown outstanding achievement in business studies; c) have successfully completed 6 business credits; and, d) have displayed a positive business attitude and be heading towards a business program at a community college or university. • Science Staff Appreciation Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; and b) have combined excellence in the senior sciences and leadership in the classroom; while actively contributing to the science department, while contributing to the Our Lady of Mount Carmel school community through leadership and Christian role modeling. • Technical Proficiency Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have taken at least two technical classes at the senior level; c) have at least three technical credits in two technical subjects; d) display a dedication and proficiency in the subject area; e) display a positive and safe working environment; and, f) be pursuing a career in technology beyond high school in an apprenticeship program or post secondary level. Special Grad Awards 1. The Salutatorian Award The recipient will be the graduating student who has been chosen to be Salutatorian. 2. The Canadian Citizenship Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have achieved personal academic success; and, c) have contributed to the school and the larger community in a significant way, and who would otherwise not be recognized. 3. The Lieutenant-Governor’s Community Volunteer Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; and, b) have exemplified dedication to volunteer work in the community. 4. The Student Catholic Leadership Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have shown leadership in his/her years at Mount Carmel; and, c) have best exemplified the Catholic faith and Catholic school philosophy. 5. The Chaplaincy Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; and, b) be a model of Catholic Social Teachings and virtuous living; c) have worked closely with the Chaplaincy Leader to promote all aspects of faith within the school; d) have been committed to living out the Pastoral theme of the year through Chaplaincy initiatives and leadership programs including but not limited to: Crusaders In Action, Salesian Leadership, Mass and Liturgy, service and outreach, retreat leader. 6. The Bishop Oscar Romero Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; and, b) have promoted social justice and community involvement by encouraging the student population to seek awareness of social justice issues and then work towards improving the human condition. 7. School Council Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; and, b) have demonstrated the greatest overall personal growth throughout their years at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School. 8. The Herff Jones Yearbook Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have demonstrated commitment and dedication to planning and producing this Year’s Our Lady of Mount Carmel Yearbook; c) have shown creative talents to capture the spirit of the school in the theme and design of the Yearbook, while working in collaboration with fellow editors, students and staff. 9. The Thomas J. Reilly Scholarship Award This scholarship established in recognition of a former Director of Education Thomas J. Reilly. The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have demonstrated excellence in the study of a modern language(s) and intends to pursue post secondary education. 10. The Edward King Memorial Scholarship The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) be pursuing post secondary education (University, College or an Apprenticeship Program); best exemplify the combination of Academic Excellence, Extra-Curricular Involvement and Christian Commitment. Also, in remembering Ed King's motto "Take a Risk, Get Involved, Be Committed". 11. Principal’s Leadership Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; and, b) have demonstrated the ability to combine exemplary leadership roles in school. 12. The Crusader Award The emphasis is on a female student that has time to do well academically, but also time to give to the school and community. The recipient will: a) be a female graduating student; b) be pursuing college or university education in the next academic year; c) have been a leader/ or involved contributor in the school community; and d) have been actively involved in community events outside of the school. 13. The Terry Lane Humanitarian Award sponsored by the Knights of Columbus The emphasis is on a male student that has time to do well academically, but also time to give to the school and community. The recipient will: a) be a male graduating student; b) be pursuing college or university education in the next academic year; c) have been a leader/ or involved contributor in the school community; d) have been actively involved in community events outside of the school; and e) all things equal, the award should be given to a student whose financial need is greater. 14. R. J. McCarthy Scholarship Award R. J. McCarthy Scholarship award rewards a graduating student who has made a significant contribution to the quality of student life and whose character and accomplishments exemplify the mission of the school. The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have made a significant contribution to the quality of student life; and, c) have strived for excellence in the tradition of Catholic education. 15. The Rotary Club Scholarship (male) The recipient will: a) be a male graduating student; b) be continuing their education at a University or College level; c) have volunteered in the community on an ongoing basis. 16. The Rotary Club Scholarship (female) The recipient will: a) be a female graduating student; b) be continuing their education at a University or College level; c) have volunteered in the community on an ongoing basis. 17. The Governor General's Academic Medal The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have taken at least six courses in their graduating year; and, c) have the highest academic average in 6 grade 12 courses taken at Mount Carmel including English during their grade 12 academic year. 18. The Valedictorian Award The recipient will be the graduating student who has been chosen to be Valedictorian. DEPARTMENT SUBJECT AWARDS: Note: These awards are subject to change. Academic Resource Department (A.R.D.) – Grad Award • Academic Resource Department (A.R.D.) Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have been associated with the A.R.D.; and, c) have developed and clearly exhibited the attitudes and behaviours of an active, independent learner. • Planning for Independence Cooperative Education Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have been associated with the PIP program; and, c) have demonstrated commitment, organization, teamwork, outstanding work habits and initiative as part of the Co-Operative Education Program in collaboration with the PIP Program. Art Department – Grad Awards • Dramatic Arts Academic Excellence Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have taken a minimum of one senior drama course; and, c) have demonstrated excellent work ethics, and have earned a minimum of 80% in the course. • Fine Arts Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have a minimum of three visual arts credits; and, c) show the best all around performance in the appreciation of art history, studio fine arts, and extra-curricular art activities. • Visual Arts Technical Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have a minimum of three visual arts credits; and, c) display excellent technical development in the visual arts and professional work habits in the studio environment. • Music Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have successfully completed a fourth year Music course with a minimum of 80%; c) have participated in music program ensembles and activities during each year in attendance at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Business Department – Grad Awards • Analyzing Current Economic Issues Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have achieved the highest mark in the class; and c) have exhibited a positive attitude in the classroom; d) have not received another subject business award. • International Business Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have achieved the highest mark in the class; and c) have exhibited a positive attitude in the classroom; d) have not received another subject business award. • Business Leadership: Management Fundamentals Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have achieved the highest mark in the class; and c) d) have exhibited a positive attitude in the classroom; have not received another subject business award. • Principles of Financial Accounting Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have achieved the highest mark in the class; and c) have exhibited a positive attitude in the classroom; d) have not received another subject business award. • Personal Life Management Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have achieved the highest mark in the class; and c) have exhibited a positive attitude in the classroom. English Department – Grad Award • Award for Language and Literature The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have a high average in at least two senior English classes at the University level;and, c) have demonstrated proficiency and imagination of language use both in the academic and extracurricular lives of the school. • Award for Language and Literature For Advanced Placement The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have a high average in at least two senior English classes at the Advanced Placement University level;and, c) have demonstrated excellence and imagination of language use both in the academic and extracurricular lives of the school. • English Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have a high average in two senior English credits at the College level; and, c) consistently honour language use in the life of the school. Peer Mentoring – Grad Award • Peer Mentoring Leadership Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have achieved academic excellence in the Peer Mentoring course; and, c) have successfully mentored at-risk students. Alternative Education – Grad Awards • Alternative Education Achievement Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student in the Alternative Education Program; b) be recognized in the areas of leadership, academics, and discipleship in the Catholic community; and c) have demonstrated leadership inside and outside the alternative education classroom. Co-op – Grad Awards • Co-operative Education Achievement Award – 4 credit program The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have maintained a commitment to academics at their individual level of achievement with a minimum of 80% in the course; c) have demonstrated commitment to the co-op program, both in the classroom and at the placement; d) have showed respect for teachers, supervisors, co-workers and peers; and e) have exemplified the standards of a Christian student in accordance with the Catholic faith, the Board virtues and Catholic Graduate Expectations. • Co-operative Education Achievement Award – 2 credit program The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; and, b) have maintained a commitment to academics at their individual level of achievement with a minimum of 80% in the course; c) have demonstrated commitment to the co-op program, both in the classroom and at the placement; d) have showed respect for teachers, supervisors, co-workers and peers; and e) have exemplified the standards of a Christian student in accordance with the Catholic faith, the Board virtues and Catholic Graduate Expectations. Mathematics Department – Grad Awards • Waterloo Euclid Math Contest Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) meet the requirements set by Waterloo University that year. • Calculus and Vectors Mathematics Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have 80%+ in Calculus and Vectors; c) have displayed a strong sense of responsibility towards their work, classmates, administration, and subject area. d) have not received the Advanced Functions Mathematics Award or the Data Management Mathematics Award. • Advanced Functions Mathematics Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have achieved 80% + in Advanced Functions Mathematics; c) have displayed a strong sense of responsibility towards their work, classmates, administration, and subject area. d) have not received the Calculus and Vectors Mathematics Award or the Data Management Mathematics Award. • Data Management Mathematics Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have achieved 80% + in Data Management Mathematics; c) have displayed a strong sense of responsibility towards their work, classmates, administration, and subject area. d) have not received the Calculus and Vectors Mathematics Award or the Advanced Functions Mathematics Award • College Bound Mathematics Achievement Award The recipient will a) be a graduating student; b) have completed grade 11 Foundation for College mathematics or Functions and Applications University/College mixed Mathematics; c) have completed grade 12 Foundations for College Mathematics or Mathematics for College Technology; d) have displayed proficiency in these areas; e) have displayed a strong sense of responsibility towards their work, classmates, administration, and subject area. • Workplace Bound Mathematics Achievement Award The recipient will a) be a graduating student; b) have completed grade 11 and 12 Mathematics for Work and Everyday Life; c) have displayed proficiency in these areas; d) have displayed a strong sense of responsibility towards their work, classmates, administration, and subject area. Moderns Department – Grad Awards • Modern Language Award for Italian The recipient shall meet at least four of the following criteria: a) be a graduating student b) will have studied grade 10 to grade 12 Italian c) will have demonstrated excellent attendance d) intends on pursuing Italian studies at the post-secondary level e) will have demonstrated an understanding of the importance of learning a second subsequent language • Modern Language Award for French The recipient shall meet at least three of the following criteria: a) be a graduating student b) will have demonstrated excellent attendance; c) intends on pursuing studies at the post-secondary level; d) will have obtained at least a B average in the Grade 12 course; or, e) will have demonstrated an understanding of the importance of learning a second and subsequent language. • Modern Language Award for Spanish The recipient shall meet at least four of the following criteria: a) be a graduating student b) will have studied grade 10 to grade 12 Spanish c) intends on pursuing Spanish studies at the post-secondary level d) will have obtained at least a B average in the grade 12 Spanish course; or will have demonstrated an understanding of the importance of learning a second subsequent language Physical Education Department – Grad Awards • Physical and Health Education Award (female) The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have shown commitment to the physical and health education program throughout their high school years; and, c) have demonstrated leadership abilities throughout the physical and health education courses. • Physical and Health Education Award (male) The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have shown commitment to the physical and health education program throughout their high school years; and, c) have demonstrated leadership abilities throughout the physical and health education courses. Religion Department – Grad Awards • Religion University Achievement Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have attained a minimum of 90% in religion class; c) have shown exceptional participation in class; d) have demonstrated knowledge of current school, community and world issues. • Religion College Achievement Award The recipient will: a) b) c) d) be a graduating student; have attained a minimum of 75% in their religion class; have shown exceptional participation in class; have demonstrated knowledge of current school, community and world issues. • Religion Philosophy Achievement Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have attained a minimum of 90% in their religion class; c) have shown exceptional participation in class; d) have demonstrated knowledge of current school, community and world issues. e) have not received a Religion Achievement Award. Social Science Department – Grad Awards • Canadian and World Studies Geography Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have taken World Issues, Environmental Geography or Urban Geography; and c) have succeeded academically and shown an enthusiasm and interest for the subject that may lead to a continuation in the field at the post secondary level. • Canadian and World Studies History Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have taken World History: The West and The World or Canadian and World Politics; and c) have succeeded academically and shown an enthusiasm and interest for the subject that may lead to a continuation in the field at the post secondary level. • Canadian and World Studies Law Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have taken Canadian and International Law; and c) have succeeded academically and shown an enthusiasm and interest for the subject that may lead to a continuation in the field at the post secondary level. • Canadian and World Studies Sociology Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have taken Individuals/Families or Challenge and Change or Nutrition and Health; and c) have succeeded academically and shown an enthusiasm and interest for the subject that may lead to a continuation in the field at the post secondary level. Technology Department – Grad Awards • Communications Technology-Video Productions Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have demonstrated work skills above and beyond course expectations; c) have completed grade 11 and 12 video production; and, d) be planning to pursue a career related to video or film studies. • Communications - Graphic Design Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have demonstrated work skills above and beyond course expectations; c) have completed grade 11 and 12 Graphic Arts; and, d) have displayed an attitude in which the student shows potential to continue in a graphic arts related field. • Computer Programming Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have demonstrated work skills above and beyond course expectations; c) have completed a senior level course in Computer Programming; and, d) be planning to pursue a career related to Computer Programming. • Health Care Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have taken the health care course in grade 11 and 12; c) will be attending post-secondary education in the health care field; d) have demonstrated empathy, compassion, and team building skills; e) have demonstrated an understanding of the importance of physical, spiritual, and mental well being in health promotion and disease prevention. • Hospitality and Tourism Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have demonstrated work skills above and beyond course expectations; c) have completed a senior level course in Hospitality and Tourism; and, d) be planning to pursue a career related to Hospitality and Tourism. • Transportation Technology Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have at least two Transportation credits, at the senior level; c) have displayed excellent safety and work ethics; d) have a high grade average during the senior years; and, e) be pursuing a related career or related courses at a post secondary institution or an apprenticeship in the automotive field. • Technological Architectural Design Award The recipient: a) be a graduating student; b) have demonstrated work skills above and beyond course expectations; c) have completed grade 11 and 12 Tech Design; d) be pursuing a related career or related courses at a post secondary level in Architecture of Interior Design. • Technological Mechanical Design Award The recipient: a) be a graduating student; b) have demonstrated work skills above and beyond course expectations; c) have completed grade 11 and 12 Tech Design; d) be pursuing a related career or related courses at a post secondary level in Engineering or Tech Design. • The ICT SHSM Graduation Award The recipient will: a) be a graduating student; b) have graduated with a specialization in communication technology.
